michael rosenbaum lex luthor Michael Rosenbaum Will Return For Smallville Finale! [Updated]

Any speculation about Michael Rosenbaum’s involvement in the final season of Smallville can come to an end. It has been revealed that Rosenbaum officially turned down a guest starring role in the Smallville series finale [Update: Wrong! Rosenbaum IS returning for the Smallville finale! Details below]

From the first mention of Smallvilles final season, fans of the series have been making one continuous request, well, plea: bring Michael Rosenbaum back as Lex Luthor. Executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders have remained optimistic throughout and both Peterson and Souders had previously hinted that talks with Rosenbaum had been progressing.

Unfortunately, while it appears that Peterson and Souders have attempted numerous times at securing Michael Rosenbaum’s return to the series (including the Smallville season 10 premiere), the reality is that Rosenbaum has repeatedly dismissed their offer – as he wants to focus on other aspects of his career.

Entertainment Weekly cites a source that says:

“He has put the show behind him and moved on. He’s pursuing his other creative outlet [writing]. By all indications, he is not going to be involved.”

While I’m sure that this news will certainly upset boisterous fans, one can’t the deny the difficulties that Rosenbaum must face in his attempt to progress his career past Smallville. After seven years in the role of Lex Luthor, the notion of simply stepping into a new role can be incredibly difficult, if not impossible.

Rosenbaum’s interest in focusing on his creative writing might bemuse many but he has made some significant progress in that respect. With one series, Saved by Zeroes, still in development at Syfy and the upcoming release of his short film GHILD with David Yarovesky, Rosenbaum has showed that he has, in fact, been actively pursuing writing and not been simply sitting around doing nothing.

You can view the trailer for GHILD below:

Even though Rosenbaum has turned down the offer to return to Smallville, there is still some time left for him to change his mind. How much time, you ask? Around two weeks. After that, filming of the series finale will begin and the entire production of Smallville will be wrapped by the end of next month.

So, if Peterson and Souders have any tricks up their sleeves (or any extra money laying around), they still have time to make one final move at bringing Michael Rosenbaum back to the series. If for no other reason than to provide a realistic conclusion to the odd Tess Mercer/growing Lex Luthor plot line.

[Update: Perhaps in result to the Twitter rage against Rosenbaum not returning to Smallville, Ausiello has confirmed that Michael Rosenbaum will return as Lex Luthor for the Smallville series finale! Here’s what he had to say to TV Line]

“I’m delighted to return for the series finale. I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness, and even their threats. Ha ha… I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again. Oh, and for Lex to become the bad-ass he’s destined to be.”

There you have it. Fans get what they wanted and Smallville can end on the highest note possible! We applaud Rosenbaum’s appreciation of the fans. (Special shout out to @EthanMyers007 on Twitter for alerting us to this.)

  1. awwwwww this sucks.. was really hopin for him to return =(((

  2. *yawn* Yep, knew he’d stick to his balls and not provide closure on the show’s character. While he was a major standout (probably the best), you cant be mad at him for wanting to persue his dream. Eh, looks like they’ll come up with something like “It’s the mind of Lex Luthor, but not the looks of him” approach.

    • His character technically was given closure… but then the Smallville producers wrote him back in. Can’t fault a man for what the producers do.

      • He basically just gave the finger to every Smallville fan out there. Everyone always used to say he was the best thing on the show. I imagine people feel differently now.

      • Very true to that taking place. We would figure that amidst of the whole “Lex is still alive” and now the “clones saga”, it was planned all along, though a bad plan. However, as a series ending, it would have been nice to see him in the final season closing off, or the seasons up to this point he was vacant in.

      • I don’t think Lex was given any satisfying closure whatsoever. In fact I remember feeling very angry when season 8 premiered & they basically ignored everything that happened in the season 7 finale. It was such an abrupt departure from what I was expecting to happen that I actually thought I’d missed an episode or something.
The way they eventually brought the character back, simply to get rid of him again was insulting to the fans in my opinion, even more so because it so obviously wasn’t Rosenbaum playing him.
The writers really have shot themselves in the foot though. They’ve gone out of their way to resurrect Lex & now they have no choice but to resolve things. If Rosenbaum can’t go out of his way to do that then it really will be a very sad way to end what has been a very good season:-(

  3. Just found that Micheal Rosenbaum “LEX” won’t come back for the
final smallville movie, it would of been real cool to see him one more time as clark kent puts on the costume & takes flight, he still could change his mind at the last minute the producers said but time is running
out. Please come back Lex one more time, for us fans, , ,

  4. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. He would have nothing if it wasn’t for Smallville, and he can’t take a day or two out of his clearly swamped schedule.
How will this affect the finale? Will they simply write Lex out? I doubt that, as the character has been a big part of this season, so they will probably recast. Use the same guy from the season premiere, he was good.

  5. Screw Rosenbaum!!! Honestly the guy is trash, him not doing the finale is the equivalent of pushing an old woman down stairs!!!! As if one cameo would ruin his appearance, come on man. Just cast someone else and move on. The guy’s entire career and all his fame is due to the show and his followers and if does not have the decency to pay his respects and to satisfy his fans by sparing a week to two weeks of his time than I wish him and his career the very worst.

I’m hoping that this just a way for him to get more money or that they are trying to surprise the fans in the finale with this appearance

  6. I think I know why he turned it down, he is waiting for “Sorority Boys” to begin production hahahahaha

  7. Even Duchovny came back for the X-Files series finale…just sayin’

    • Very true. He’s obviously a better person than Rosenbaum.

      • Although, I don’t know that I trust the validity of this article. It quotes an unnamed source from Entertainment Weekly that states that Rosenbaum “by all indications” will not be involved. I never had my hopes to high that he would return, however; in the past he’s been very honest and open about potentially returning to Smallville. He’s never said it’s impossible, just that everything would have to fall into place just right for him to come back. Read into that what you will.

        • Actually, he’s specifically said that he wouldn’t return to Smallville when season 10 was announced as the final season.

        • I didn’t really think he would either, but loads of other actors came back (Perry,Martha,Johnathan,The JSA,Lionel) and they are far busier than Rosenbaum.
I’m just disappointed. He obviously doesn’t care about his fans.

Maybe it isn’t true. But this story hit 12 hours ago, and there has been no denial of it’s authenticity.

          • Exactly, with so many other actors coming back again and again, Rosenbaum just looks plain bad. The actor always owes to its public, what happened to “the show must go on”? Unless he plans to disapear completely from showbiz I think him not appearing in the season finale will always leave a smear in his resume.

    • George Clooney returned to ER.

      • So if Clooney can go back to tv… But Rosenbaum can’t. Yeah something wrong there.

        • Yeah. Does Rosenbaum have anything better to do than return Smallville? Where has he been exactly?

  8. Maybe this was mentioned to throw us fans off, so when the final does air – we will truly be taken by SURPRISE of Rosenbaum’s “LEX” appearance?

  9. Why the hostility against Rosenbaum? He’s been saying ever since he left the show, he wouldn’t come back and wanted to pursue other interests. The real blame should be on the showrunners and producers for assuming he would come back and inserting him into this current storyline without the promise of him returning. Michael clearly wants to move on from his time on Smallville, I don’t blame him one bit. He left after his contract ran out, good for him. He’s fulfilled all obligations to the show. For all you “so called fans” criticizing him, you were probably never real fans of his work in the first place. I applaud him for moving on, this show is terrible anyway and has lasted way past it’s expiration date.

    • If you don’t like the show why bother posting about it?

  10. He was the best Lex Luthor ever. Respect.

People wouldn’t be so upset at him not returning if he hadn’t been such an amazing Lex.

  11. Rosenbaum is scheduled to do a Smallville-Con in Spain, a week after the series finale airs. I find it hard to believe that he would have the nerve to show up, if he refused a final return to the show. It would be kind of crass to take the money of Smallville fans in those circumstances. For this reason, I still think he’ll appear in the final episode.

    • I KNEW IT!!! HA HA HA!

      Pats self on the back.

  12. Hope your right, unless he also decides not to show up in spain
    for the smallville-con event, , ,

  13. If Rosenbaum is in fact showing up for a Smallville-con in Spain a week after the finale then I think that he will be in the finale. If not then he will probabbly change his mind if he looks at the negative things that people, myself included, are blogging for him. If he doesn’t do the finale, he will have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life. He really has no choice unless he is an idiot

  14. Television shows are among the most notorious for surprise guest stars. Smallville, so far, we’ve learned weeks ahead of the fact; but that doesn’t mean that Rosenbaum isn’t going to show up in the season finale.
If he doesn’t, than I would hope they get the fellow who played Older Lex in the season premiere. He was fairly good. The only problem I see with that, though, is Lionel’s presence, unless Lucas Grabeel/Lex kills him like Michael’s Lex did. Somehow, I don’t think Lionel’s gonna let his son, whose aging at an accelerated rate, pass him up in age.
My personal belief is that if Lex is coming back, it’ll be in the second half of the finale. I can sort of see this happening: first half is Darkseid finally manifesting in fully physical form (unless he does so at the end of Dominion), he and Clark duking it out (hopefully in the sky), and then while Metropolis is recovering from the attack, Lex gives ‘The Blur’ one final challenge, similar to the first episode of the season, though perhaps on a much grander scale.
I think the biggest problem is that Rosenbaum portrayed Lex’s fall from grace so well, and his brief stint at the true nemesis of Superman (final episodes of Season 7) showed how well he can play that role. Than we have stand-ins in Season 8 and now in 10. At least this season, they’ve had 2 or 3 kids who already played Lex throughout the series.
I like the clone idea more than the ‘Darth Lex’ we saw in Season 8. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for either Rosenbaum or the Lex from ‘Lazarus’ being in the Series Finale.

  15. Who do you think you are michael rosenbaum? No one on this earth would know who you are if it wasn’t for Smallville. Do you think your Oscar-worthy performances in Sorority Boys and Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane has made you recognizable? You owe it to the series and THE FANS to at least make a minor appearance and pay homage to the series that gave you everything you have. Get over yourself. You will never put the character of Lex Luthor behind yourself. Whatever endeavor you set out on with always come up short. Obviously if you’re developing something for SyFy you can see how your future is gonna turn out. You have no class and now I’m sure your levels of respect among peers and fans alike are going to be held in that same regard.

  16. Well this blows! Now I’m sad. I was all excited for tonight’s episode, but now I’m too sad to enjoy it. Oh well, I can deal with Lucas Grabeel playing him and somehow stopping the accelerated growth. Then Lex and Clark will be the same age, and they can end the show like that.

  17. what an idiot, I don’t care if he has said from the start that he is not coming back, so don’t come back to be in the tv series, but for one show? It is one episode. Something that has been 10 years in the making, and he can’t do it? The guy is a crock, He wouldn’t be no where as well known if it wasn’t for smallville. What an ungrateful jerk! I have seen his other stuff and it’s trash. If it’s because He doesn’t want to shave his head, i can understand, but I am sure they can cgi his little bold head in.

  18. Does anyone remember “lois and Clark when John Shea (Lex Luthor) left the show half way through and never appeared in it again till the very end, At least he botherd to though.

    • glad that lex is coming back but that comment reminded me… wish John Shea had been a guest star here… he was my favorite Lex next to Rosenbaum

  19. BOOOOO!!!!! maybe they’ll do a behind shot and have a Rosenbaum soundbyte. That would be lame. But then again having another actor potray him is not too dumb, he looked a little deformed anyways towards the end!

  20. Tonight’s episode was epic! :)

  21. oh… i wish he would do the last epi… if only for a 1 minute cameo.

  22. what a screw you to all the fans… selfish baftard

  23. Smallville fans have a right to be mad. Saying you’ve “moved on” and “put the show behind you” is pretty much a slap in the face to the fans and what the show did for his career. When you’re a part of a successful series you never put it behind you! Why do you think actors like William Shatner and Patrick Stewart are still so popular? It’s because they embrace the franchise that made them household names, they still go to conventions, and the fans continue to support them by watching their new shows or films. Good luck to Rosenbaum’s new career, but I have to say flipping off your fanbase and acting like your too big for the show that made you well known is not going to help you in your new endeavors. But I guess if he’s getting away from acting and turning to writing it doesn’t matter much, still he’s probably going to lose a big chunk of his Smallville fanbase, which is all he’s really got.

  24. Skip it Michael.
He doesnt have to come back.
    He fulfilled his original contract.
He has no obligation to return.

  25. him shaving his head for ten or twenty minutes of screen time can ruin the chance of him landing a role in some movie shall the oportunity arrive.

    • Two reasons why that excuse doesn’t fly.

      1. Heard of a bald cap?
      2. Technically he’d be portraying a Lex Luthor clone, so he wouldn’t have to be bald.

  26. I wish no ill will to MR. Just so that’s out there.

I also think that MR returning to Smallville would be the biggest TV moment since Joe Biden said the “f” word. What if (I said “if”) this is all a front and his return is the best kept secret since what Cloverfield actually was?!?

I’m not going to keep my hopes up, but how (pardon my language) bad ASS would it be if he popped in and was all “Hello Clark”? Yeah. Pretty bad ass. ;)

    • Well I’d hate to say I told you so… ;)

  27. The facebook page for smallville just said he would be back for the finale :/…
