The mask? Who cares….I see it as a secondary thing

Let’s get really 110% serious die hard core uber fanboy here. In Carpenter’s original, Myers didn’t have the mask on as a kid, didn’t wear the mask in the asylum, didn’t wear the mask during the escape from the asylum. While stalking during the day, he was either:

- shown at a distance where you couldn’t tell if he had a mask or not,

- character was filmed driving with back to camera so you could not see his face/mask

- camera films him at an angle where you cannot “see” his face/mask, but the frame ends about near the neckline

Also during a brief scene, we saw him without the mask (although he quickly put it back on).

In other words, people, as iconic as the mask is, in the Carpenter film, we never got a real good look at Myers with the mask in until the first half of the movie and very briefly saw his banged up face near the end of the film.

Now, do I think Rob Zombie made an error here with Grizzly Adams above? Yes, I do.
Do I think it is also think it is Rob Zombie’s mistake to make? Yes I do.
Do I think there will be another Halloween film with or without Zombie after this, and with the mask or a variation of it? Yes.

Hypethically, do I think that if Zombie was given the third of the Texas Chainsaw remake series that he would change Leatherface? No. I also don’t think he’d take away Candyman’s hook or the syringe from Dr. Herbert West’s hand? No, of course not. Because what do we know here? Yes, Myers doesn’t have his mask on “all the time” (makes sense to me, actually) but in the film, at some point he does have that mask or a variation of it.

I don’t think his previous film in the redo was anything great. Degrading, yes. Not great. But while I’m not crazy about the idea, I can’t completely dismiss it either.
‘Sides, if nothing else, it makes the eyes roll and gets interest in the follow up. There’s probably a reason why Myers is “mask”less for most of H2. It may be a dumb idea, it may be a good one.

We will find out either way.

That’s the thing – I DON’T have an affection for the original (although it may have sounded like I do from what I said), actually I think it’s highly overrated. But I still can appreciate the original idea, and as a horror character/icon, I think Myers is fantastic.

As for what you said about that’s what horror movies should be – I am not one of those people who likes horror to be safe (i.e. boo!, then safe, boo! again, then safe again etc), but I just don’t think it should be about having all of this stuff just for the sake of it. Maybe you can look at Zombie’s Halloween remake and feel like all the stuff that’s happening on-screen is warranted, but what Zombie does in all of his films is exactly what horror SHOULDN’T be, IMHO.

Thinking up some easy idea doesn’t beat trying, and this is just not trying. Hey guys you so why Michael always need to wear a mask? I think we can do something really out of the box with that idea! No you can’t. Try harder.
