[Update: We now have a new featurette for This Is It]

This will certainly make all of the hardcore Michael Jackson fans, who are sitting on pins and needles in anticipation of the his post-mortem rehearsal movie This Is It, very happy. Someone (read: AEG or Sony) leaked a clip from the upcoming movie and oddly enough, no one has been asked to take it down and the video is still available on YouTube. So, chances are the studios want it out there and that it’s viral marketing.

Michael Jackson does look like he’s on top of his game preparing for the tour. Everything I read about his last work says he was meticulous about practicing for his shows and liked to have full creative control. It still amazes me how he could talk so mousy in public and in front of cameras, but put a microphone in the man’s hand and his voice drops a couple of octaves. It also appears that he was breaking out his old dance moves from the videos for the song he is performing.

You can watch the clip below after the jump. Thanks to Cinema Blend for the heads up.

The part where he chases the girl across the stage by doing the “leg-drag-run” while slinging his hand back and forth is straight from one of his 80′s videos. We posted a slightly longer video clip a couple of weeks ago and Michael’s voice was on point. I’m sure the whole concert would have been enjoyable to listen to but unfortunately he had so much controversy surrounding him that it distracts from his accomplishments.

What doesn’t make sense to me though is how hard they are pushing the marketing for this film. Just last week AEG came out with laughable prediction that This Is It would make $250 million in just five days; Sony, of course, denied those predictions. When the buzz around Terminator Salvation started heading south, the studios began running a massive marketing campaign that included releasing a lot of unneeded video clips of the film. Turns out, the movie wasn’t the heavy hitter they thought it would be and the over-marketing was them trying to make up for it.

I wonder if AEG and Sony are concerned that This Is It will suffer the same fate? If they are confident that “everyone” will go see this film then why not hold off on all the clips and just let word of mouth or standard marketing run its course? I know AEG and Sony are saying “they aren’t trying to make money” from this endeavor but I still don’t believe them.

What do you think about the newly released clip from This Is It?

This Is It moonwalks onto screens October 28th, 2009.

  1. man that concert woulda rocked, such a shame.

  2. looks great,i think it’s worth the hype

  3. I can’t wait to see the footage. I think the clips are awesome to watch. My heart is heavy with his death. May he rest in peace.

  4. WOW!!!!!! Michael is pheonominal. The man is a legendary genius, there will never be another like him…not in this lifetime. This clip alone is great and it makes me want to scream. I’m scared i won’t be able to controll myself in the movie. I LOVE YOU MICHAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Let us HOPE that there will never be another tortured soul like MJ.

I, personally, couldn’t give a rat’s ass about this concert film. I may not mind hearing a tune of MJ’s on the radio while in the car, or a doctor’s waiting room, or over the Grocery store speaker system, but I sure won’t be BUYING any CD of his. It’s not Mozart. it’s not “great music”. It’s just pop music for god’s sake. I get bored with it in about 45 seconds.

MJ was good at what he did, I gotta give him that.

But calling him a “genius” is melodramatic hyperbole. Remove the costumes, which he didn’t design. Remove the musical arrangements which he didn’t do. Remove everything for which MJ was not responsible. How much of what’s left is truly meritorious of the term “genius”?

I couple of teaspoons of “reality” here would be de rigueure.

  6. Mike, You took time to post. I would think you’re not so sick of hearing about it. I have to laugh!

  7. Deb, did I say I was “sick of hearing about it”?

What DOES bother me is the incredible amount of hyperbole regarding MJ’s talent. He was a great pop artist. One with a very troubled life and with some serious moral issues.

And last I checked, this forum wasn’t just for people who AGREE.

Every once in a while, the “lovers” need to understand why the “haters” (and I don’t consider myself a “hater” per se, but one who has a more realistic view of MJ’s worth) do so.

As for laughing, I tend to laugh when I hear people with little to no musical knowledge spout “genius! genius!” about their favourite pop artist.

It’s a serious word, but gets overused and becomes banal in its overuse.

MJ was a great pop artist, sang and co-wrote a lot of memorable popular tunes. And I dare say some of his music videos (for which he was not responsible) were quite entertaining.

None of that brands him a “genius”.

Don’t you think it’s a valid point of view to take? To actually DISCUSS the merits of calling someone a “genius”? There are so many other musicians out there who are more deserving of the monicker “genius” than Michael Jackson.

And in case Kanye West reads this forum as well, yeah, Mr. West is also undeserving of the term. You don’t get to call YOURSELF a genius, you douche. (sorry, K.West just grates on my nerves)

  8. Todd N.Says:I think Micheal was great I grew up with his music,I can’t wait to see “This is it”.I feel so sorry for his family,Micheal is truly missed.

  9. I love you, Michael!

Michael Jackson is an incredible talent and art genius! Michael Jackson is a legend, a hero, a god!

  10. Agreed, it would have been such an amazing concert… I really want to go to see it on halloween and if you buy your tickets through fandango for that day you can win a ticket from the tour.. would love to frame that and put it on my wall

  11. @Mike.e

So who do you consider “Genius”? I mean not speaking for all but i’ve always considered michael one for everything that is michael (things you mentioned he didn’t do,arrange, etc). Most to all of those things were pretty much meant only for him and had someone else done it in my opinion it wouldn’t have looked as good as when mj did it. Why? MJ gave it all in each performance… i remember him coming out in a wheelchair to perform “Remember the Time”. Now to cut this short(because we can debate this all night but i tend to get on people’s bad side) this is only my opinion on MJ and how i see him, you could question my musical knowledge all you want but at the end of the day its what i see and not what some music guru believes.

  12. to Mike e,

You must be very, very and really, really ignorant about MJ’s music!!!…or u must be paid to say all those thing about MJ!!!…u are the ‘Ghost of jealousy’!… Look around you! the MJ hype is phenomenal all over the world!…call it ‘Genius’ or not, he must have had done something really, really right!!!..
Love u more and more everyday MJ…miss u..

  13. This sickens me that this creep is getting so much attention.

  14. Sickens me when people search for MJ and then post comments like the one above. Things that make you go hmmmmm

  15. hey Gigan300,

What normal civilised people would do is to go their favorite artist site, not to go to the one they don’t like. Like me, I love Michael Jackson, not Britney Spears, so I go to the site that spelled MICHAEL JACKSON, not BRITNEY SPEARS or TAYLOR SWIFT…Do you even know the difference in the spelling? Michael jackson surely does not sound like Britney Spears or Taylor Swift…

    Love U n Miss u so much MJ…

  16. Michael Jackson is an incredible talent and art genius! Michael Jackson is a legend, a hero, a god!

    I love you, Michael!

Michael Jackson… you have to “feel Michael Jackson”. It is nothing to understand. If you feel, you have all, if you don’t – you have nothing.

Michael Jackson is like nobody else: perfect entertainer, kind human being, beautiful and sexy man.

Michael Jackson is magic, strong and powerful. And Earth must have his name. In Universe saying Earth it is saying MICHAEL JACKSON.

  17. If you are from USA, it is difficult to feel and so to understand the Michael Jackson genius! You are to close to “see” it.

Michael Jackson is the most loved artist of all time on the Earth and, maybe, in the Universe.
And that’s because he loves his funs.
    I feel his love.
    It last forever.

  18. Michael Jackson is more important for human history than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Both of them are genius.

Michael Jackson is not only a pop singer.
Michael Jackson is an artistic, social and philosophic phenomena.
Michael Jackson write his songs, lyrics, film scenario, choreographie etc.
Michael Jackson is a new religion.

  19. i love u Michael this movie waz the best movie i ever saw in my life time and it will always be !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
