Michael Fassbender will show off his version of a young Ian McKellen by portraying a youthful Eric Lehnsherr/Magneto in this summer’s X-Men First Class. He’ll thereafter follow in the footsteps of Sir Ian’s Lord of the Rings costar, Ian Holms, and play an android in a Ridley Scott sci-fi flick – one titled Prometheus.

Fassbender will join original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress Noomi Rapace in Scott’s upcoming film, a project originally conceived as a prequel to his 1979 sci-fi/horror classic Alien that eventually morphed into a standalone tale which Scott says will contain “strands of ‘Alien’s’ DNA, so to speak.”

Heat Vision broke the news about Fassbender, who’s been rumored to be a legitimate candidate to join Scott’s latest cinematic creation since word got out that there will only be one “Alien” prequel. Little is known about the storyline of Prometheus or what significant alterations Damon Lindelof (Lost) made to the original script co-penned by Jon Spaihts and Sir Ridley himself. It’s certainly possible that the film will still in part revolve around futuristic astronauts on a mission to terraform other planets, which was an idea Scott talked about way back in April of 2010.

The casting of Fassbender in Prometheus officially takes him out of contention to play mentor to the iconic ebony-haired, pale-skinned princess (possibly Kristen Stewart) in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Fassbender has been quite the popular actor during the last few years, appearing in graphic warrior flicks like 300 and Centurion; lending his voice to the Xbox 360 title Fable III; and, perhaps most memorably, donning W.W. II garb to play an undercover English soldier with a fine knowledge of German cinema in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. He also showed up in Jonah Hex, but we’ll let that one slide…

Scott’s previous (pardon the term) dabblings in sci-fi have resulted in two of the most well-regarded pics offered by the genre – the original Alien and the futuristic Noir Blade Runner, based off the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. Prometheus will technically mark the filmmaker’s first original project that deals with futuristic technology and otherworldly life in over three decades – so while it might not actually feature the iconic xenomorphs with acidic blood that Scott is associated with, Prometheus arguably remains his most heavily-anticipated release in a long while.

FOX just barely shifted the release date for Prometheus from March to June 2012, where it will no longer be pitted against another long-in-the-making sci-fi release, Disney’s John Carter of Mars. Look for more big names to sign on for Scott’s new project in the near future.

  1. i dont understand, is this standalone sci fi movie inside the aliens universe, or is this something entirely different? I’m all game for original stories, but i would have liked a new alien movie with Ridley Scott in the captains chair

    • This is an original story, not an Alien prequel. It may have some Alien references, though.

  2. Well , as the article said , Scott sys it has “tands of DNA from the Alien universe, but its no longer a direct prquel.
Make of that what you will.

  3. Sorry.
My guess is they changed it into an original work to allow them more freedom with the script.
It may contain elements of the Alien franchise that fans might recognize , but they wont tie those things to the previous films directly.
I would have loved to have been in the Writers room for those script meetings.
I am sure it was fascinating .

  4. yeah, see im in that kinda limbo with this one as well , some more info as to what this is would be nice cause it sounds like it is a prequel for Aliens, and not Alien. This has all the hallmarks of an aliens prequel Terraformers land and stumble onto a wreckage that is actually holding a mysterious and deadly secret. It has Fasbender as a robot like Bishop, this just screams Alien.

  5. So, is Prometheus even an Alien story anymore??

  6. I’m just glad that Ridley is making another sci-fy movie… was a little bumed there will be no Aliens movie with Ridley doing his thing, but hey, every time he ventures into this genre he kills it!!( Alien,Blade Runner) and I’m ready for another RS movie that changes the game

  7. i’m reading now at other websites that aliens are now going to be featured in it, even though speculation started with thier recent comments that no aliens will be in the film. According to comicbookmovie.com, the aliens, space jockeys, will feature in it and someone somehow will find alien dna, giving them the cooridnates to an alien world, they are currently scouting locations for an alien home world

  8. It will have to feature aliens and they supposedly are going back to the Original concepts that HR Geiger made for the first movie, sans the penis and vagna motiefs.

I want to know more about John Carter of Mars, its too quiet on that movie and that is not always good.

  9. According to Sky Movies (British satellite channel) Prometheus will feature Giger’s aliens, with their DNA being integral to the plot, making Scott’s line about the DNA something of a joke…
