Even with roles in 300 and the upcoming Jonah Hex, the comic book crowd might not be immediately familiar with German-born actor Michael Fassbender. If today’s news comes to pass, all of that is about to change.

Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 is reporting that Fassbender has been offered the role of Eric Lensherr/Magneto in Matthew Vaughan’s X-Men: First Class as well as the role of the main villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. Taking into consideration that these films are set up at different studios, if Fassbender is interested it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do both. He’s going to have to choose one or the other.

Although we have no idea who the villain in the new Spider-Man might be at this point, my vote is Fassbender for the role of young Magneto in First Class. I think Fassbender would make for an unbelievably effective younger version of the character (he would have made a great Xavier as well).

I also love the idea of Fassbender sharing the screen with James McAvoy’s Professor X. Given that the film centers around the evolution (and disintegration) of the Xavier/Lensherr relationship, an actor of Fassbender’s caliber would be a welcome addition and excellent sparring partner for McAvoy.

Fassbender appeared as Lt. Archie Hicox in last year’s Inglourious Basterds and as previously mentioned, he can be seen this summer as a villainous henchman in another comic book adaptation, Jonah Hex.

X-Men: First Class is set to be released June 3rd, 2011 while the Spider-Man reboot swings into theaters on July 3rd, 2012. Jonah Hex hits screens on June 18th.

How do you feel about Fassbender appearing in either of these films? Which role would you rather see him take on? With his name as a potential candidate, who might the villain in the Spider-Man reboot be?

  1. I would rather see him as a younger Magneto myself. But for the life of me, I do not understand why they would want to recast the characters. What then was the whole point of Patrick Stewart being at the end of Wolverine to basically set up First Class.

That being said, I am looking forward to what they are going to do with First Class

    • Dude, First class takes place in the past with Magnus and Xavier discovering their powers and bonding, later falling out with one another.

Ummm… Stewart and McKellan can’t look THAT young – not even with CGI. So I don’t really understand your complaint here…

      • Well I got you there because that wasn’t really a complaint. I was just saying how I felt.

And if the movie went that far into the past, then explain to me how they would introduce younger version of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and various other mutants, which is what they are supposed to be doing. I don’t disagree with you when you say it will be about Xavier and Magneto bonding and their friendship and falling out, but it’s also supposed to be about the formation of the X-Men and their first missions together. Hence the tagline: First Class

        • They might as well just use this film as a reboot, because continuity has been soo screwed since with XO:W that it’s not even funny now.

          • You are not lying. The continuity is extremely sketchy

  2. He should take the Magneto part. He looks the part. And in the x-men movie he could have some sequel films, because in the Spiderman films the villans have mostly died.

    • Killing off the villains at the end of each film was one of the mistakes of Raimi’s franchise. I don’t think Sony will do it this time around.

  3. For his career he shoudl choose Spiderman, that is if he is given the major villain’s role. X-men First class is not going to do as well as Spiderman and that is a guarantee

  4. It’s kind of tough to determine who he should play since we have no idea what villain he’d be playing in Spider-Man…

  5. Something is telling me that hes being casted as Norman Osborn, and Jamie Bell as Harry Osborn. I think they could easily pass as being related. And it seems like Jamie Bell would play a better Harry than Peter.

  6. DANG, he looks like Christian Bale :-*

  7. I can seriously see him as a Young Magneto, though if Lerman for Spiderman!thinks it could be(not confirming) that it could be Norman, then it wouldn’t go bad either way. I’m more for Magneto.

  8. Since we dont know who the villian is in the spiderman reboot then its a safe bet if he go with xmen as the young magneto.

  9. very good actor. Either project would be good to have him on board. I dont know which i would like magneto or spidey villain. As for spidey, i wonder who he would be up for.

  10. Hmm .
He might make a good Kraven The Hunter.

  11. Im up for him as Magneto, but me thinks that he would play Morbius in SP4… he has that vampire look to him IMO.

    • He would definitely make a perfect Morbius

  12. I would like him for the X-Men role; but as for Spidey I think it’s Sergei Kraven.

  13. He was a Fallen Angel/Nepharim/Demon character in a little british show called Hex…perhaps he would make a good morbius?

I was kinda hoping for a Lizard story for the new spidey movie. Maybe he will play the human morbius and then find the sample that turned doc connors into the lizard toward the end setting him up for the vampire morbius in the next film…it would fit with the whole vampire craze going around at the moment

Saying that he would definitely work as Norman Osbourne, setting him up for green goblin in the sequel

Then Again he would make a great Magnus next to James Macavoy

    Im excited either way

    • Also I dont think he will be Kraven, he is to proper and suave to play such a rough character

  14. I think he’d make a good Magneto. Why am I more excited about X-Men First Class, done by Fox even, than I am about Spider-Man? That is sad.

  15. my bet is that he’ll play electro.

  16. Definately Norman Osbourne, I could see this guy as The Green Goblin…

  17. Why cant whoever gets magneto be actually jewish…people tend to forget that.

    • Don’t think it much matters. Most Jewish characters aren’t played by Jews, and most Jewish actors don’t play Jewish characters. For example, while Magneto may not be played by a Jew, many of the really good choices to play Spider-Man were Jewish (Logan Lerman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anton Yelchin, Andrew Garfield).

  18. he should be in the “Spiderman” reboot
i still would like to see James Masterson as Magneto

    till next time

  19. Well he’s quite attractive…

@ Christopher: I’m with you on him for Magneto. I would love to see him spar with James McAvoy. They could be just what this train-wreck of a series needs to get back to its roots.

  20. Magneto!

Spiderman 4′s going to be a train wreck anyway

    • NO Spiderman 4

This guy is Good-lookin’ amazing eyes.

  21. The boy is fit! Don’t much care which film he does, ‘slong as he leaves his shirt off and glares sexily at the lens :P
