Michael Fassbender to Produce & Star In ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Movie

Michael Fassbender to Produce & Star In Assassins Creed Movie

Late last year it was reported that video game developer/publisher Ubisoft had formed Ubisoft Motion Pictures, a studio tasked with adapting the company’s big video game properties (such as Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell) for the big screen. UMP signed with Sony, which allowed the independent studio unprecedented amounts of creative control and final approval rights in everything from script and casting, to budget and release dates. Many insiders viewed the deal as a misstep on Sony’s part, since it gives UMP much control (despite having little experience) in feature-film development.

However, with the latest news regarding Assassin’s Creed, one of Ubisoft’s flagship titles, public perception about UMP’s movie-making strategy may quickly start to reverse course toward the positive: Variety reports that breakout star Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class) has signed on through his DMC Film company to both co-produce and star in the Assassin’s Creed movie.

UMP CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had the following to say about the latest Assassin’s Creed movie news (via Variety):

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice. Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

The video game franchise revolves around a man named Desmond Miles who is kidnapped by a clandestine corporation called Abstergo. The organization forces Desmond to pilot a machine called the Animus, which sends his consciousness back in time to relive the memories of his ancestors, who were all part of a brotherhood of Assassins, tasked with influencing the course of history through the murder of select targets. The first game took place during the Crusades and followed one protagonist; the sequel game took place during the Italian Renaissance and followed a different protagonist; the upcoming third game will be set during the American Revolution, featuring yet another new protagonist.

No word yet on how the film version will adapt that convoluted sci-fi/historical drama premise, or who Fassbender would play in the film (Miles, one of his ancestors, or some combination of both). What is known is that UMP will develop and finance the film largely on their own (with some co-financing options to attract potential partners), thereby maintaining tight creative control over the Assassin’s Creed brand, which has sold over 30 million video games since its launch in 2007 (with bigger sales on the horizon, thanks to Assassin’s Creed III). UMP will also be responsible for choosing a writer and director to head the project, and will manage production costs by utilizing its own resources  - namely the two dozen-plus game studios it has under roof, which will be used to create the visual effects for the film.

The UMP experiment is one that many are watching closely; after so many failed attempts (at both the critical and commercial levels) to have big movie studios turn video games into successful and popular film franchises (Doom, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, etc…), the question at hand is whether or not video game companies will be better at adapting these properties they are so close to and (theoretically) understand better. Assassin’s Creed - for better or worse – seems to be guinea pig that could determine the future of video games at the movies.

Assassins Creed 3 Michael Fassbender to Produce & Star In Assassins Creed Movie

In any event, having the red-hot Michael Fassbender on board is already a big step in the right direction. With a standout role in Prometheus, another major leading role in the upcoming blockbuster sequel, X-Men: First Class 2, and another possible Awards-attracting role thanks to 12 Years a Slave (his third film with Shame director Steve McQueen), Fassbender’s name on the marquee will be an instant boost for Assassin’s Creed.

No word yet on a production timeline, as things are still in the early developmental stages. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the Assassin’s Creed movie as more news develops.

  1. wow that is the best news ive heard in a long time. this is a game changer for video game movies. he is by far 1 of the best actors alive today. amazing news, with his talents assasians creed has a chance to win a academy award. as crazy as that sounds.

  2. Most sites are reporting that he will be playing Desmond. Maybe the film will change the plot a little so that the ancestor looks the same or similar. Altair would fit him better but Ezio is a more interesting and popular character.

    This could work.

    It might also be awful.

    • The characters look Identical in the games. In in the new ac3 does he look different but who knows they could have changed Desmonds face again like they did in Revelations.. Fassbender doesn’t need to look like the game character anyhow.

      • and No Altair was way more BA than Ezio and totally under used he was a real hardened assassin. Ezio was italian and cheery and lame and DIDNT get interesting till Revelations. What game were you playing??

        • Imagine Kingdom of Heaven but with the plot and story elements of Assassins Creed. Thats where it needs to start.

  3. I’ll admit I’m comfortably enjoying a coach ticket on the Michael Fassbender express. He’s a remarkable actor. And I’m drawn to whatever he’s in. The pal’s got some serious talent. I couldn’t think of a better choice for Altair. Ezio might need someone much more Italian.

  4. iReally hope this won’t suck. The story in the Assassin’s Creed games is one of the better ones so they have a lot to work with.

  5. I’m a diehard Assassin’s Creed fan and this news is amazing! If there’s any actor who has the charisma and acting ability to pull of the intelligent and wise character of Altair, it’s Michael Fassbender. I’m hoping that he plays both Desmond and Altair :)

  6. I always thought that whoever played Desmond would had to have a varied look to accommodate the fact of his multicultural ancestry. Yet with a good actor like Fastbender is easy to dispense believe and focus on plot points rather than small details that affect some level of immersion.

Now the question is how is the movie going to deal with the Animus? Is it going to be the guy who plays Desmond in the bodies of his ancestors, something like quantum leap, where he(and the audience) sees him as himself and everyone else(including mirrors) sees him as the ancestor.? Or will it be distinct roles with different actors? The former might be better aging characters throughout time, while the later might make a more interesting film. In my opinion.

  7. Me before this news: aww, they’re gonna wreck it, aren’t they?
Me now: Fasbender you say?….. go on.

  8. The good thing about the AC film is that Desmond doesn’t necessarily have to look like his ancestors (what with so many different DNA strands converging over the generations), so Fassbender doesn’t have to look slightly Syrian for people to believe Altair is his ancestor, or Italian for Ezio.

Also, thanks to the rather limited amount of source material the chances of inconsistencies are actually pretty slim (especially when compared to a franchise like Star Wars), so if they take their time, and maybe some advice from me and my bros at the AC Wiki ;), they can pull it off.

  9. Sweet with fassbender this is gonna be a good one

  10. Well… if there is an actor alive who could take pretty much any role and make it something worth watching, it’s Fassbender. I truly hope he pulls it off. At least now it’s all up to the script.

  11. So is he playing Desmond AND one of his ancestors?

If you play the game they look so much alike, if he did, it would not surprise me.

BTW, this is the best news I read in a long time.

  12. If he plays Desmond, then he won’t have that much screen-time though will he? – which doesn’t make sense because… well, he’s Michael Fassbender ;)
So it stands to reason that if he “stars in the movie”, he’ll play Altair or Ezio.
In the game Ezio and Desmond kinda look alike to me (and they are related after all), so maybe Fassbender will be playing BOTH Desmond and Altair/Ezio.
Whichever way it goes, I’m happy. Although Fassbender doesn’t really look or sound Italian, he’s one of those actors who could pull it off regardless.

I’m just glad this project is FINALLY moving forward.

  13. Fasbender is a good choice although i would have prefered to see scott adkins still a good choice im going to have to keep an eye on this one

    • Why would they add some low acting talent stuntman? It’s exactly one of the reasons why video game adaptations are godawful.

  14. The Fassbender fascination has certainly escaped me.
It almost seems like its the law to have to like him.
I don’t and I find the guy a bit creepy, actually.

    • Michael Fassbender is a great actor. Watch him in Shame, A Dangerous Method, Prometheus, X-Men First Class, or Hunger and you’ll see why he’s so damned popular.

      • I have seen his work. He is popular but not with me.

        • So you don’t enjoy an actor with phenomenal talent? Do you prefer action films by any chance?

          • So if an actor has phenomenal talent I have to enjoy him?
No. I do not. Nor do I believe he has phenomenal talent.

            • He’s a good actor, but at this point he just seems like he is all over the place and it may cause over-exposure. The things he has going for him is that he does have good range and he is not Channing Tatum or Taylor Kitsch.

It is funny that people act like he just fell out of the sky though, I saw him in Eden Lake and Blood Creek after 300 and I doubt many people caught those flicks.

              • Right. Characterizing him as a good not great actor
is accurate and I would say is is a good actor.

And you’re right to he has been around a while.
I actually liked him in 300 and most people
seem to be unaware he was in it.

                • “he” is a good actor

                • I didn’t realize he was Stelios in 300 until I was searching through his film history after watching another movie on TV and playing Six Degrees. He was awesome in 300.

But I get what you’re saying about him being creepy. He does have that look that he might stalk you or jump out of your closet with a knife or in a monkey suit.

                  • That! is the reason why he is such a good actor.
He really gives that kind of vibe if u watch him in one of his movies.. but you will be surprise to find him actually very likeable in interviews I.M.H.O

            • Agreed.

  15. SQUUUEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  16. This better be good, because Michael needs to do more impressive works. But seeing how it’s a video game adaptation…

    • “because Michael needs to do more impressive works”
more Impressive??? …this guys roles are unforgettable

  17. Michael Fassbender is a great actor, he was excellent in X-Men: First Class.

This is surpising news, I didn’t expected him to be in a movie like this.

Whether this idea turns out to be a great one or a disater, at least Hollywood did something different instead of remaking a classic 80′s and 90′s movie.

    • MACAVOY was far suppior. Fassbenders accent fell out and went Irish to often imo

  18. For crying out loud. He is OK actor but he is NOT enough to play the lead in AC! Dang, the prods are going to ruin 1 more of my fav games! :( Bruckheimer killed Prince Of Persia with the HORRIBLE choice of the lead actor. Now they are killing AC. I’m realy tired of the actors that don’t have the LEADER’s presence on the screen. And how about the swordfighting combat skills? The only actor I see that can handle the role is Orlando Bloom. He is a great actor and he has impecable swordfighting skills. He can handle all kinds of the weapons required for this movie! CONVINCINGLY. The thing that many can’t realise is that not everyone has the abilities and skills to play in the big movies. Playing the larger than life characters has the different demands from an actor than the independent movies do. Besides, Fassebender is too old to play Desmond. He has not enough presence on screen to play Ezio or Altair.

    • You’re talking about weapons skils? Something that a dedicated actor (like Fassbender) can train for? Watch. 300. That is all. He has a huge on screen presence as well. Its a good choice. You think Orlando bloom was just natually good with swords and weapons? Negative. This is a good choice but it needs to be an epic on the same level as LOR or Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, etc. They can’t make this a hour and a half action flick on the level of Transformers garbage. They need to develop the story and characters over a two and half hour movie, if not longer…Can’t wait for this though, regardless of how good/bad it looks, I’ll probably still see it.

    • Disagree.

  19. Nolan North and Kristen Bell-Desmond and Lucy; Nolan has become videogames #1 leading man, and he needs to be in a big budget movie.
    Michael Fassbender-Vidic; he’s a good villain
Santiago Cabrera-Ezio; See his portrayal as Lancelot and tell me he isn’t right for the role.

    • I’d rather see Nolan as Nate in the live action Uncharted film but I doubt either of our choices arent gonna happen…

      • are*

      • Live action Uncharted would be WONDERFUL but would much rather see Nathan Fillion playing the lead role with Emily Rose playing the leading lady. AWESOME!!

  20. Sony and Ubi need to make sure that those producing, writing, etc., read and take notes from the Alamut by Vladimir Bartol.

Assassin’s Creed would not exist without this book.

They need to give Fassbender some make-up for me to really buy into him being an Assassin with Eastern heritage. Even Desmond has that nose. Keep in mind that up to this point, Desmond has Eastern, European, and Native American heritage.

He needs to look the part, whatever part he’s playing. I’m sure he’ll have no problem nailing the accent (no, not from the first game, from the games FOLLOWING. Altair had no real accent in the first game.)

  21. Goosebumps !

  22. Wait, was Michael Fassbender in 300?

    • It’s weird when an seemingly new awesome actor comes out on to the red carpet and you never realized how many movies he has really been in and you have just been overlooking him this whole time.

  23. I’m not sure how I feel about this. He’s a decent actor but doesnt scream Desmond/Altair/Ezio/Conner to me. Personally he’s my pick for Commander Shepard in a live action Mass Effect film, (Or Lena Headey as Femshep) but hey if its a start to FINALLY getting good video game to movie adaptions fine with me….

Ps. Ubisoft, hire me as a consultant. You have my email.

  25. Although I am excited to see Fassbender connected with this movie I am also worried about how the script/plot will be. What makes Assassin’s Creed soo awesome is it’s attention to detail. Will we see Fassbender jumping buildings, flying down and hiding in hay? How will the Animus be handled? Sooo many questions that I hope they stay true to the story and pull it off

  26. I like Fassbender as an actor…WRONG choice for Assassin’s Creed movie. Gonna be lame.

  27. I believe Fassbender definitely has the acting chops, but when I look at him I don’t see an Altair, Desmond or Ezio. He could however play Darim, but that’s to small of a role for Fassbender.

  28. well guys he is good actor but i am not sure about this movie, will be so hard for him to jump fly around and fight with some bad guys need some other actor its not his position and role.If will be fail like with Prince of Persia i mean no attention to details of game will be fail…

  29. Who cares about an Assasins Creed movie, just play the games, they’re way more entertaining than a movie could ever be. It doesn’t matter who’s in the lead role anyway, because like every other game to movie adaptation, it’s going to SUCK !!
