Michael Clarke Duncan Dead at 54

Michael Clarke Duncan, star of such films as The Green Mile and Daredevil, has passed away at the age of 54 in a Los Angeles-based hospital. While no cause of death is being revealed at this time, his fiancée Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth has confirmed the news.

Clarke Duncan was hospitalized in early July for a myocardial infarction, and it appears that he never truly recovered from that terrible incident. Stallworth’s rep says that she only briefly exited his hospital room before returning to find the actor had passed.

Michael Clarke Duncan is probably best known for the part of John Coffey in the aforementioned Green Mile, a role that earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. While it wasn’t Clarke Duncan’s first major role – that credit goes to Michael Bay’s Armageddon – it was certainly the one that put him on the map.

Duncan’s presence in Hollywood stretches back further than even his film and TV roles, as he was a bouncer and bodyguard for some of the ’90s more popular celebrities. It was surely his personality, demeanor, and his imposing 6’5” frame that helped Clarke Duncan transition into roles in front of the camera.

After Armageddon and The Green Mile, Michael Clarke Duncan went on to star in a variety of films – playing his fair share of bad guys and heroes – and more importantly solidifying his place as a major presence in Hollywood films. Despite frequent typecasting as the villain, Clarke Duncan was able to use roles in films like Talladega Nights to prove he wasn’t just a menacing presence with a deep voice, but had a penchant for comedic timing as well. Still, that voice was unmistakable, and helped him find an illustrious career breathing life to CGI characters like Commander Vachir in Kung Fu Panda and Kilowog in The Green Lantern.

Ducan’s most recent onscreen credit was for FOX’s The Finder, a spin-off of the popular series Bones. Unfortunately The Finder was cancelled in early May, but Clarke Duncan had already lined up several more projects since then.

If there’s one thing that can be said about Michael Clarke Duncan it’s that he was a dedicated actor with a one-of-a-kind screen presence. A long list of films, TV, and video game credits are merely testaments to a man who was taken from this earth too soon.He may have played his fair share of villains and menacing characters, but outside of the filmmaking world his interviews presented him as a kind-hearted soul who was grateful for his opportunities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

R.I.P. Michael Clarke Duncan

  26. Really sad news, just read from his manager that most fans didn’t ask for an autograph upon meeting him, but simply asked for a hug, what a lovely image to have of someone that seemed to be a gentle giant!

    RIP Michael Clarke Duncan

  27. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t really seen many of his movies, but he was excellent in all those that he has appeared in…

This news hits a little close to home since he’s about the same age as my dad – who last year, found out he shouldn’t even be alive: his blood circulation was very poor (very little blood was pumping to the right side of his body) and all the doctors were shocked that he hadn’t gotten a heart attack yet. Luckily they operated in time, and while he’s STILL recuperating from the procedure almost a year later, he’s still alive and with us. He stopped smoking, drinking and exercises regularly and because of that, his health is steadily getting back on track.
Obviously I don’t know the details of Mr Duncan’s death or hospitalization, but in my father’s case (and so many other people) it just goes to show that a person should take care of him- or herself by seeing a doctor on a regular basis and living a healthy life – no matter how good the temptations are (whether they be cigarettes, alcohol, fatty foods, etc.).

Needless to say, it’s terrible that he passed away at such a young age. He seemed like a really nice guy (a true “gentle giant”) and from what I’ve seen, a great actor.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

RIP Mr. Michael Clarke Duncan… you will sincerely be missed.

  28. Really sad story, I hope he can rest in peace now. But I don’t believe he died because of a heart disease. They are not telling us everything.

  29. This was truly sad. I loved all the movies he was in and had a mega crush on his dulcet tones (I loves me some baritones!). I still watch Armageddon and laugh at his lines “Just trying to give my man a head start, Harry.”
