The legendary soldier, Solid Snake, could be returning in a Metal Gear Solid remake according to a new rumor from a reliable leaker. Metal Gear Solid was a landmark title of the original PlayStation's library and a crowning technical achievement of industry icon Hideo Kojima. However, publisher Konami has kept the series dormant since the franchise's latest outing, Metal Gear Survive, in 2018.

Developed by Hideo Kojima and published by Konami in 1998, Metal Gear Solid introduced players to revolutionary stealth-focused gameplay mechanics backdropped against a cinematically driven plot. Coupled with the voice talents of David Hayter as Solid Snake and his equally memorable co-stars who delivered some of the most prolific voice work of its era, Metal Gear Solid remains a defining example of industry standards. Its critical and commercial success would spawn a legacy of sequels, spin-offs, and even Snake’s entry into the Super Smash Bros. roster. Kojima would continue to redefine the series with each mainline entry until his untimely departure from Konami in 2015.

Known leaker AccountNgt recently took to Twitter to share their alleged insight into upcoming video game projects, asking fans for their questions. In a now-deleted response (via ComicBook), AccountNgt was asked about a possible Metal Gear Solid remake, to which they replied simply, “Yes,” but offered no further context. Unfortunately, both the initial tweet and AccountNgt’s response have been deleted from Twitter. Currently, there has been no comment from Konami about this exchange, but AccountNgt has become something of a reliable figure when it comes to leaks, having accurately unveiled a number of big-name projects before their official reveal.

Solid Snake stands in profile and Big Biss holds a long gun in Metal Gear Solid

While the latest Metal Gear Solid remake rumor doesn't offer a lot to go on, the timing of this leak does seem appropriate. Last October, Konami had expressed interest in revitalizing many of its IPs after confirming that it would be restructuring its operations. Metal Gear, among others, was named specifically. Rumors also indicate Konami has reached out to Singapore-based development studio Virtuos to handle an unnamed project. It's also worth noting that Sony had supposedly expressed interest in working with Konami on a Metal Gear-related project as well. Whatever rumors ultimately prove true, it's highly doubtful that Kojima will be involved with any future titles given that he reportedly departed from the series on unpleasant terms.

As AccountNgt is an unofficial source, these rumors should be taken with a pinch of salt even if the user has been reliable in the past. But if the claims prove true and Metal Gear Solid does get a remake, it will be interesting to see what form it will take. This July marks Metal Gear's 35th anniversary, so it might be the right time to unveil a new Metal Gear Solid project. Classic IPs like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy have already set a gold standard for what remakes should aspire to be. Hopefully, a title as revered as Metal Gear Solid can do the same.
