‘Men Of A Certain Age’ Cancelled After Two Seasons

TNT has shut down its middle-aged male dramedy Men Of A Certain Age after just two years. The show featured an ensemble cast of veteran actors and garnered two Emmy nominations in as many seasons.

While the show won its fair share of fans among TV critics (Screen Rant not withstanding) it just couldn’t keep up the numbers necessary for TNT to pick it up for a third season.

For their part, the network had nothing but good things to say about Men Of A Certain Age: “TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons… [but] the audience simply hasn’t built to the point where we can continue the series.”

The numbers support the statement, while the 2009 series premiere netted more than 5 million viewers, the second season never even broke half that. Even more damning, the latest crop of episodes averaged less than half a million viewers in the key demographic.

It’s a disappointing turn for Ray Romano, whose star power after the nine-year run of Everybody Loves Raymond helped gain the show some early notoriety. His co-stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Bakula (Star Trek: Enterprise) won’t be thrilled, either.

Emmy voters will be dismayed: the announcement came just one day after series star Andre Braugher received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, an honor he also achieved last year. Men of a Certain Age won Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for director Millicent Shelton at the 2010 Image Awards, among various other nominations.

While the show’s small but loyal fan-base may be upset, it’s not hard to see why TNT would drop a series with only average ratings. The cable landscape is becoming more and more competitive every year, and the network needs to make room on the schedule, and in the budget, for more lucrative shows like Falling Skies and the upcoming Dallas revival.

At least two of the leads have upcoming film projects to look forward to. Romano will reprise his role as Manny the mammoth next summer in the fourth Ice Age animated movie, Continental Drift. Braugher will appear in the southern comedy The Baytown Disco opposite Billie Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria.

  1. This is one of the best television shows, if not the best, I have seen. (Found it on demand). The characters are so well-developed, the show is so rich. We’ll be definetly poorer for the cancellation. Hats off to ray ramono and the cast. Please, please reconsider.

    • I do agree-Ray Ramano is a genius and “Men of Certain Age” was perfect, as was his hit everybody loves raymond. Big mistake to drop it TNT!!!

      • Ugh. I so agree!!!!! This was one of my favorite shows and wondering why it hadn’t recorded in quite some time. Google landed me here. I’m so disappointed!!!!!!

    • Please reconsider!!!!!We love this show!!!!

    • Yes, what a shame, I liked this show. Let’s cancel the good stuff and keep adding more and more reality garbage…doesn’t make sense! :/

  2. Please reconsider, TNT! As a “woman of a certain age” I thought this was an amazing show. Hillarious, well written, GREAT characters played by great actors. Don”t let it go!!!

  3. Great show i am 45 and love it! found on demand

  4. This was smart, funny, and real. With all the crap this is on TV…(reality shows of people’s lives I care nothing about), Men Of A Certain Age appealed to “others of a certain age” (40′s and above). It’s unfortunate that this demographic, apparently, counts for nothing!! We keep losing great shows like Law & Order, Boston Legal, Harry’s Law…etc. Sad.

  5. TNT you really screwed up! I am boycotting your network. I will no longer watch ANY TNT shows. Is that all it really is to you ratings??
Tv has become A WASTELAND of garbage, this one show gave intelligent thinking people something to watch. In fact I am thinking of cancelling my satilite Tv all together. Its all junk!!!!!!!!

  6. Recently found Men of Certain Age on Entertainment on demand. I love this show. There aren’t many shows that I look forward to. Great writing, and love the characters, and actors. What a great disappointment that the show was not renewed. Not into the violent shows. Tired of police shows. Will look for others of similar worth and value due to limited time for TV.

  7. I agree I love this show. I had been meaning to watch it and went to OnDemand and found without realizing it had been canceled!!!! Now I am hooked and there is no more. Has any other Network thought of picking it up???

  8. Like from the Geico Caveman commercials…”NOT COOL! I was patiently waiting for the next season and bam! Gone. Bring Thoreau Chevrolet back!

  9. This was an awesome show, I really enjoyed it and am upset that it is not returning. I wished someone else would pick it up. Very well written and Ray and the boys played the part well.

  10. Found it onDemand — watched all the episodes — was very much entertained by all the characters. This should be on the air now. We hardly watch the new TV shows! They are ridiculous. We do watch the Dallas series. Ray Romano did good on this!! Come back Ray and guys — many viewers miss you all!!!!!! I want “Good Joe” back!!

  11. I love this this show!! Been watching it on demand. Great cast of actors, and can relate to the show. It is a shame that TNT cancelled the show. Like others commented, reality tv sucks! this show should be brought back! It is true, has a great story line, and keeps you interested in whats coming next. BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. There’s so much crap on the telly. Give them one more season. You have at least 187 people from this site alone who will watch. Look at how long it took Sienfeld to get into the mainstream. What’s 8 more weeks going to matter? The studio can put it into to their tax losses column. This is too good a show to let die by the wayside of the Television Wasteland. I’m already thinking about canceling my cable service and just renting movies. Best of luck to all. Larry

    • I am so mad, disappointed, bummed out. I loved this show. Great cast, great story line I looked forward to it. There is a bunch of junk on TV. Why do all the smart shows get cancelled.

  13. I can’t believe this was cancelled. I found it on demand as many others…Saw it on air long time ago but never got to watch it. Watched both seasons and was so into the show, and wondered where the other seasons were…

You guys really messed up taking this off. I was gonna buy the DVD series but i guess since i already watched both seasons, and some episodes such as the softball game i watched a few times because they were so good.

This was like House…Very thoughtful and never got old…Laughs, drama, and the lot. Get it back on, we need true shows to watch, not garbage.

  14. Wow.
This is one of the best shows I’ve seen on TV. I’ve watched a lot of TV…and this was QUALITY TV. I would look forward to seeing this one, anticipating the next episode every week.

Of course it was cancelled…it was good.

  15. Wow, I am so very disappointed to hear this. I was just wondering when the new season would pick up and when I saw Ray’s appearance on a promo for “Parenthood,” I feared the worst and with good cause.

Both my husband and I loved this show and looked forward to it every season. I am so mad that its cancelled. I really loved this show and will truly miss it. :-(

  16. I agree with the comments posted here. This was a show to look forward to every week, not enough of those. It is a shame that a show that depicts reality far better than the “reality” junk that is out there gets canned. Shame on TBS and others that allow this show to be cancelled.

  17. BTW, Dallas is horrible!!!

  18. I have been waiting for this to come back on. So very disappointed it has been dropped. I loved this show!!!! One of the best shows in a long time! Man :(((

  19. Bad choice TNT. Hopefully another network will pick it up. This was one of the best shows Ive seen in years and tv wont be the same without it.

  20. What a mistake. I look forward to this show every week. I am so disapointed that tnt will not be renewing it. I think they shoud def. reconsider there decision. It will be missed. I thought it was funny and made me laugh one of the only good shoes on tv and now its gone too. Why do all the good shows get canceled. !!!!

  21. It’s a real shame that an actual quality show is removed from tv after only 2 years when trash such as ” jersey shore ” goes on and on with a large simpleton fan base . The television land scape is filled with one pile after another of garbage , but quality does not last ! Bring back the good shows of television history , and throw out the trash !

  22. i like that the remake of dallas ranks higher than this…. sad days.

  23. the sad part of all this is that we don’t get to see the guys anymore…of course dallas and jersey shore are always there, eh…js canceled though…nfc’s anymore. So tnt messed up; why none of the other players picked it up..still sad.

  24. YES, THE PILOT WAS SLOW BUT I WAS HOOKED ON THE SERIES ANYWAY. IT WAS BRILLIANT SCRIPTING AND THE PACE FLOWED. EVEN THOUGH I AM A FEMALE, I COULD RELATE TO ALL THAT WAS GOING ON AND APPRECIATED A DRAMA THAT ACTUALLY IMITATES THE REAL WORLD. I LAUGHED AND CRIED FOR THE CHARACTERS. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TNT NOT LETTING ANOTHER SEASON TAKE ITS COURSE. I AM A WEEKEND WATCHER, SO I DID NOT GET TO SEE IT UNTIL RECENTLY AND LOVED THE TNT RERUNS AND HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY SOMETHING REAL. I THINK TNT REALLY LET its CUSTOMERS/VIEWERS DOWN WITH THIS UNFORTUNATE DECISION. THESE WRITERS AND ACTORS ARE GREAT TALENTS. I HOPE THEY PURSUE ANOTHER NETWORK. I WOULD HATE TO SEE AN END TO THIS REFRESHING DRAMA SERIES THAT CATERS TO AN AUDIENCE FOR PEOPLE OF HIGHER LEARNING

  25. saw 20 0f 22 episodes on demand. girlfriend and i glued to it for two days. real stories, real life situations. if on a abc, cbs, nbc could of suceeded. I lost The gifted Man and My own worst enemy also.

  26. Very disaointed great show great scripting funny walm and real…much more real than the reality show crap!..bad move to axe, seems like viewing public with taste dn’t outway the people with poor taste.

  27. This was a great show and honestly I feel it was TNT’s fault for it being cancelled. I mean I had to constantly remind myself of the new episodes.

  28. Can’t believe this show is done. You play so much crap on tnt that this was one of the very few shows that brought me to your network. Somebody needs to smarting up and put this brilliant show back on tv.

  29. This show was NOT ADVERTISED ENOUGH or in enough places. We didn’t know about it until fishing around on “on demand”. What a shame! This is a REALLY GOOD SHOW! Even my HUSBAND likes it. Darn…
