‘Men Of A Certain Age’ Cancelled After Two Seasons

TNT has shut down its middle-aged male dramedy Men Of A Certain Age after just two years. The show featured an ensemble cast of veteran actors and garnered two Emmy nominations in as many seasons.

While the show won its fair share of fans among TV critics (Screen Rant not withstanding) it just couldn’t keep up the numbers necessary for TNT to pick it up for a third season.

For their part, the network had nothing but good things to say about Men Of A Certain Age: “TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons… [but] the audience simply hasn’t built to the point where we can continue the series.”

The numbers support the statement, while the 2009 series premiere netted more than 5 million viewers, the second season never even broke half that. Even more damning, the latest crop of episodes averaged less than half a million viewers in the key demographic.

It’s a disappointing turn for Ray Romano, whose star power after the nine-year run of Everybody Loves Raymond helped gain the show some early notoriety. His co-stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Bakula (Star Trek: Enterprise) won’t be thrilled, either.

Emmy voters will be dismayed: the announcement came just one day after series star Andre Braugher received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, an honor he also achieved last year. Men of a Certain Age won Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for director Millicent Shelton at the 2010 Image Awards, among various other nominations.

While the show’s small but loyal fan-base may be upset, it’s not hard to see why TNT would drop a series with only average ratings. The cable landscape is becoming more and more competitive every year, and the network needs to make room on the schedule, and in the budget, for more lucrative shows like Falling Skies and the upcoming Dallas revival.

At least two of the leads have upcoming film projects to look forward to. Romano will reprise his role as Manny the mammoth next summer in the fourth Ice Age animated movie, Continental Drift. Braugher will appear in the southern comedy The Baytown Disco opposite Billie Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria.

  1. TNT did not give this show a fair chance. You have to give it some time to catch on when you have so few episodes a season. Just when a person gets into the story line, the show doesn’t start up again until months later, and that is no way to build a following. If TNT does not have the good sense and leadership to bring back “Men of a Certain Age,” then I truly hope another network will pick it up and do it justice with longer seasons and more advertising.

  2. I really grew to love this show. There is nothing else like it on any network . Life is full of messy awkward situations even as we grow older. Nice to see men not portrayed as bumbling fools but sensitive and thoughtful in their own way. Somebody should bring it back!

    • I agree 100%. This is the first show that I had ever watched and fell in love with from the beginning. I am a 38 year old male, and I can relate on sooo many levels of each character, but I especially can relate to Joe. I am so much like him, and this show brought me tears when I watched the final episode. It really upsetted me that they canceled this show. There are no other shows out there that focus on male relationships like this, and I feel they made a terrible mistake. Oh well, what can you do.

    • Well said. Very sad to think it disappeared so abruptly. Id the Dallas revival is a better show I’ll eat my hat.

  3. Hi I live in Australia just watching 2nd season men of certain age can,t understand why it was not a hit love the show thx tom

  4. I loved this show! I thought it was insightful, and entertaining. I think the problem was that no one knew about it. Not enough publicity by any means. I just happed to run across it and I followed it as much as I could. I really enjoyed it, but I had no idea when it was on again. So … blame the publicists! This was a great show. Put it out there again … commercials that people cant miss, and I think it would be a hit.

    • My husband and I are both in our 40′s, with one child. After boy goes to bed we love watching this show. It helps us unwind after a busy day. And helps us put things into perspective. That everyone has a bad day now and again; whatever, age you are! I love this show how the single guy still thinks he can get the girl no matter what age! I love the family guy that is a commited father, husband, and also a new father late in his age. And the divorcee Joe. He reminds me of my Dad when he introduced his girlfriend to everyone after divorce. I must say they did an amazing job!! So sad they canceled this show. I do hope someone else picks this up! And to have Scott Bakula come back to T.V. after Quantum Leap and Enterprise failed. I hope he returns to T.V once again. The fact that these guys are all in late 50s is inspiring!!

  5. This cant be true!! I live in Australia and my husband and I have been hooked!!! This show was brilliant characters had a lot of depth, it was real man we loved it!! Really funny and heart warming!! Sooooooo disappointed it has finished. Take it to HBO Joe!!!

  6. I’m in Australia as well and just finished watching season 1 & 2. Was searching online to see when season 3 was coming out when I found out it was canceled. I loved this show. Very disappointed

  7. Very disappointed to hear that this series has not been renewed by TNT. Picked up the Second Season DVD on a whim and was very impressed by the casting, characters and storylines. The directing was quite good, but could have used a little more pizzazz in the way of more colourful locations and subplots like in the TV series “The OC” where the lives of the parents were as interesting as the lives of the kids, (only with the emphasis more on the fathers in “Men of a Certain Age”), or like in the film “Point Break” where male friendship is pushed to more extreme levels. Even in “the OC” the father was a passionate surfer as well as a corporate type. Perhaps the producers should have made Scott Bakula a retired X-treme pro skateboarder, Ray Romano a fugitive Goodfella in a witness protection program, and Andre Braugher a porn producer lol

  8. The short number of episodes, before a break, then episodes months later? How does this build a following? Try something more consistent. Remember Cheers? That turned into something special, once given time.

    • A quality show by any standards in any era. It’s sickening that we won’t see more of it when so much trash is on television. Everyone involved in the series should be darned proud of it.

  9. Hello, I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and I will miss Men of a Certain Age. I always looked forward to watching it and enjoyed interaction and great story lines. I really don’t understand how a great show like this should be cancelled Like wine, it takes time for quality to appear but once it does, it lasts forever. I believe Men of a Certain Age has or should i say, had that quality. Too bad the folks at TNT aren’t willing to give it another go for at least another year.

  10. The series was excellent. Good writing and acting. However it is an adult based show and needs to be on an adult station that rates an r rating. Just like deadwood or entourage. It needs the grit to stay afloat and it can’t be that on a family station. All three actors are excellent and can pull it off. Good luck! B.G.W.J

  11. Of course it was cancelled! It was intelligent, current and meaningful, all the things most people in the U.S. can’t really understand. I believe it was replaced by the super popular “Housewives of Meth Addicted Man-Children”. Yeah!

  12. I love this show they need to bring it back I just got all my friends hooked it just needs more advertising. Alot of people can relate yo these guy and not just men.
