Two of the sequels currently being juggled over at Columbia Pictures – along with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and The Girl Who Played With Fire – are Men in Black 4 and 21 Jump Street 2. The former is still in the early stages of development, but the latter was recently given a summer 2014 release date, which means that filming will probably begin in mid-to-late 2013.

Perhaps in the interests of expediency, Columbia has selected the same writer to work on both projects.

The Wrap reports that Oren Uziel will work on a rewrite of the 21 Jump Street sequel script that, as with the first movie, was written by Michael Bacall. Since directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (also returning after the success of 21 Jump Street) are currently busy with the final days of shooting on The Lego Movie, they’re leaving the script in the hands of Uziel so that it will be ready to go when they arrive to helm the 21 Jump Street sequel.

As soon as Uziel is finished with 21 Jump Street 2, he’ll be moving on to pen the script for Men in Black 4. Columbia Pictures Chief Doug Belgrad stated a while ago that he didn’t know what they were planning for the next sequel in the franchise, but that the financial performance of Men in Black 3 – which pulled in over $624 million at the worldwide box office – was more than enough to earn a greenlight for Men in Black 4.

The fact that they’ve hired Uziel as a writer either means that he made a good pitch for a new story or the producers have already decided which direction they want the franchise to go in and they feel that Uziel is the best writer for the job. The latter seems most likely, as Men in Black 3 director Barry Sonnenfeld stated in an interview with Syfy that Will Smith has already come up with an idea for the next film.

Uziel doesn’t have any feature release credits yet, but he wrote the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and is attached to write the script for New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat reboot. He also wrote the script for forthcoming horror sci-fi The Kitchen Sink, in which a pair of teens ally themselves with vampires and zombies in order to fight off an army of aliens.

In a way, having a largely untested screenwriter working on both projects is more interesting than an established name, since it’s more difficult to know what to expect. The screenplay for Men In Black 3 was penned by Tropic Thunder co-writer Etan Cohen and the movie did reasonably well with both critics and audiences, but having just gone back in time it’s anyone’s guess what going forward will entail for the series.

21 Jump Street 2 is out in theaters on June 6, 2014. Men in Black 4 doesn’t have a release date yet but we’ll let you know when more details become available.

  1. Men In Black 4 ???

    • Because MIB3 was a success. So you cash in until it runs out. The 3rd was probably the best out of the trilogy so it gives hope for more.

      • I only saw the first one and that was enough for me.

I understand the point you’re making and accept it. Even if a film is not critically successful, the most important thing is how much money it rakes in.

        • 70% on RT is still pretty good. Not 91% good like the first installment but usually what drops sequels in points is lack of “character development”. Which IMO isnt necessary as much since its a sequel but each to their own.

          • still theres been a ton of sequels that have improved upon their predecessors ex: Toy Story 2, Spiderman 2, TDK, Godfather 2, X2, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator Judgement Day, Road Warrior, I could go on…

            • You’re right on the money about all the sequels you cite.

Too bad the same cannot be said of IM2 OR IM3. IM1 was superior. I felt that IM2 and 3 were on the same level.

              Well… that’s another thread….

              • … iron man 3 is the best iron man.

what the hell is so bad about it?

            • Woah now steve toy story 2 is the worst of the trilogy, which is crazy cause its really good. And thr godfather is better than part 2 imo

      • 1st was the best imo but its better than 2.

im excited for this. its always good to see will smith in movies

        • First one was good, the second one was okay, and third one had one too many un-answered questions. Shane Black, fantastic Director/Writer..

But on IM3, it seems like he didn’t “get” Iron Man at all. What makes his character so unique, I know, his intelligence, but still in a way its how he is in the suit. He was in the suit for maybe 20% of the film. It’s not bad to have Tony out of the suit, but in all honesty, he had more suit time in The Avengers than he did in this one.

          I’ll say this… The movie was good/bad.
          just my opinion.

  2. MIB 4 was lackluster

    • What! youve seen it already? are you the doctors new companion?

    • War Clown, what is your secret for time travel?!

  3. I’m super excited about the MK reboot. @H-Shaw: Is it still planned with what Kevin T is doing with his web series or is it something entirely different?

  4. MIB 5 was better then 4.

    • MiB 7 is my favorite!

      • Oh man, you think that’s good, wait till you see Rocky 52!

        That is awesome!

How he’s able to get around the ring with a mechanized walking frame, the sheer emotion.

        You’re gonna love it!!

      • guys go home your drunk… mib 37 was the best

        • Nope, Incredibles 2 was superb

  5. Wait, there’s a new Mortal Kombat movie?

    • I know right? I was completely unaware of that..

    • It’s already been out. Screen it last night. Love it. Nic CAGE is all the characters. It’s emotionally driven, funny, dramatic, action, it’s got everything you could want in a movie, EVER.

  6. Too bad. I’d kinda like the idea of Will Smith returning to this role in 7-10 years when he could be the old guy training a replacement/partner.

  7. Are they following Bollywood? Mindless Sequels. MIB was classic MIB 3 wasn’t good. They should continue if only they can write a script as good as GHOST PROTOCOL. That was a true comeback movie.

  8. IT be nice if they made more mortal kombat movies remade from the anime and or freshly written scripts they are my favorite like who doesnt like action ? 8D!
