A slew of heavily-anticipated comic book blockbusters, reboot/sequels (requels), and literary adaptations are slated to hit theaters in 2012 – so, you’re forgiven if it’s slipped your mind that Men in Black III (a.k.a. MIB 3) will also be arriving.

There’s been pretty much nothing of significance to report about the third Men in Black flick since this past summer. However, chances are good that a teaser for the threequel will hit theaters sometime before the end of 2011, possibly screening in front of a franchise title like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows or fellow Sony production, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

However, in the meantime, Sony has unveiled a pair of teaser posters for MIB 3, which once again reunites the “younger and cooler” Agent J (Will Smith) with his curmudgeonly-but-effective mentor, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). It’s all the more appropriate then that their profiles are on display in these one-sheets, which recreate the characters’ profiles via black letting on a white backdrop – a less colorful design that is still somewhat similar to this poster for next month’s new release, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy.

You may also notice that the web address “TheMenInBlackSuitsAreReal.com” is included in these posters too. That link will take you to a viral Facebook page, where (presumably) updates like images or promo/trailer links will eventually be revealed.

Have a look at those Men in Black III posters below:

Men in Black III hasn’t exactly had the smoothest of productions, seeing how it was delayed by multiple script rewrites – the most recent being done by Hollywood blockbuster go-to scribe, David Koepp. The plot of the film was previously said to involve J traveling back to the 1960s in order to prevent a dangerous alien named Boris (Jemaine Clement) from altering the future by killing the younger version of K (Josh Brolin). While that is probably still the case, the film’s storyline has otherwise likely been changed quite a bit by now.

It’s rarely a good sign when big-budget productions like MIB 3 are given substantial rewrites during shooting. Plus, the threequel will hit theaters ten years after Men in Black II opened to mediocre reviews and a worlwide gross that marked a 25% drop-off from its predecessor – also an indicator that interest in this franchise has diminished during the years since the original MIB movie was released in 1997.

However, Men in Black III will have the benefit of the 3D surcharge and a pretty decent cast that includes people like Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), along with brief appearances by people like Bill Hader (Superbad), in order to help it become a financial and critical hit. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out…

Men in Black III arrives in 2D and 3D theaters around the U.S. on May 25th, 2012.
