Megan Fox Insists ‘Fathom’ Movie Will Be Made

Speaking with MTV News about her role in Jonah Hex, actress Megan Fox also addressed the status of the long in-development Fathom movie.

Fox signed on to play Aspen, the film’s main character, in March of last year – which gave the project some much needed momentum after several disappointing takes on the material. Her deal also made her a co-producer alongside her boyfriend/fiancé/whatever they are this week, Brian Austin-Green.

The Fathom comic book was created by Michael Turner (who passed away in June of 2008 after a long fight with bone cancer) and follows the adventures of Aspen Matthews – an amnesic, super-powered mermaid.

While there’s been very little news on the film in recent months, Fox insists Fathom will still be made at some point- even if it means someone else taking the lead role.

“That’s going to happen even if I have to step away from it and give it to someone else… That movie will happen, just because I love it and it needs to happen.”

This isn’t meant to insinuate that Fox has vacated the role or is about to. She assures fans that they’re working on the script and for the moment things are running smoothly. While that doesn’t indicate that much progress has been made since the last time we received a status update , the project is still moving crawling forward – at least for now. In lieu of her departure from Transformers 3, perhaps this will leave Fox more time to work on Fathom.

Fox closed out the interview by touching on the rumors of her involvement in the Red Sonja film:

“Is that coming back around? There were talks of it a while ago, but as far as I knew, someone else was already doing it … I didn’t realize that was open again.”

Fox’s name had previously come up after director Douglas Aarniokoski and star Rose McGowan were dropped in favor of taking a different approach to the film. At the time her publicist denied her involvement but the above comment seems to indicate at least a small level of interest.

We’ll keep you updated on any further developments with Fathom and Red Sonja. In the meantime, you can check out Megan in Jonah Hex starting this Friday.

What are your thoughts on a Fox-less Fathom movie? Is she a good fit for the lead role or are you hoping she’ll step aside and let someone else take over?

  1. I wont lie she is very nice to look at and this movie will be nothing but that if she is in it.

  2. This is a movie that should be made with or without Megan.

  3. She looks the part, but her acting skills arent that great, but whatever happen it needs to be made in honor of Micheal Turner who was a great artist and man. If megan fox doesnt star who should be aspen?

    • Not Megan. I hate saying it, but the girl can’t act. She’s got some heart- as evidenced by her determination to see this film made- but she’s… just not a great actress. I doubt she can carry a main leading role.

      • thats what i think, but i dont know who would be a good aspen…..if only she could act alot better

  4. I would be happier if someone else did play the lead. She’s great to look at, but I want someone who can actually act.

    • agreed

  5. I respect that she is open to walking away from the role.
That shows that she is determined to get the project made ,no matter what.

  6. I’m really surprised that she has been in so many mainstream films. She seems more like a “Bikini Car Wash” kinda actress.

    • It’s kind of funny you say that because she got her role in Transformers by washing Bay’s car (probably in a bikini).

  7. People, people, people….let’s be fair to Megan.

Megan Fox’s claims to fame are Transformers 1 & 2, Jennifer’s Body, and the upcoming Jonah Hex.

Transformers did not give her a chance to put any acting skills to work. The entire point of her role was eye-candy. In Jennifer’s Body, she did play a role that fitted her looks but her acting did get a little more range. And no one’s seen Jonah Hex yet, but while yet again, she’s got a role that focuses on her looks, I’ve been impressed with her trashy Southern Belle accent/acting in the previews. The point is, she’s been very type-cast for her looks – and people say that she’s a horrible actor when she hasn’t even been in any films that require serious acting.

Maybe she’s not a profound actress. A lot of actresses aren’t. But can she fill the part? And can she bring in the money? Can she look good doing it? Chances are, probably, YES.

And who knows, maybe she has more acting skill than we give her credit for. Maybe she’s been taking acting classes and working on it. It’s not unheard of. My point is – to be fair, she deserves a better chance than the rep she gets.

    • Well, I saw Jonah Hex and I have to say, her chances are getting slim.

      • Yes, Jonah Hex did flop. However, it was A) Not her fault and B) She acted fairly well for the part she had. NO ONE could save the movie, not even Malcovitch OR Brolin. No one could, it was just a bad movie all on it’s own. So do not judge her acting based on a terribly made film. She is a decent actress, given the material she has been given.

  8. “super-powered mermaid.”

    Surely you jest!

As for Fox she aint that purdy and her acting in Jennifer’s Body was atrocious, it was like watching mutton play lamb!

  9. EWWWW to Megan ,sorry girl you need to get a personality and you should stick with maybe porn?

  10. Yes I agreed, she should really just stop acting altogether. Yeah she is pretty like every other actress with surgery. She just needs to stop what she is doing, she is box office poison.

  11. I could easily play this girl. U want a girl with blue eyes? bigger boobs than megan? high cheek bones? Acting experience? Then I’m the girl.

  12. It has been awhile and her star has dimmed some since her last two movies were not box office successes this dim needs a boost from a younger star, Ashley Greene

  13. Even though this was published 4years ago, it was updated recently so I think what seems to be the general consensus among real turner fans should be reaffirmed, especially if this really ever does happen.

Yes, Megan fox is easy on the eyes and physically is suited for the role of aspen Matthews, however, that is the extent of her suitability for a turner character.

What drew me initially to turners comics, like most of us, was just that. Art of the female and male forms through his eyes were amazing. But what made and kept me a huge fan was the depth beneath those forms, the layers and complexity of their spirits that created a beauty separate from their physical attributes.

All I can do is base my opinion of ms. Fox’s acting capabilities on what I have seen and unfortunately based on that I would say if she really cares about this film being made right, she will not act in it. And while the roles she has been in May have been difficult for even a seasoned actor to do well in, she chose them, which speaks to her as a professional as well.

As to who should play aspen, my hope is it is someone who absolutely forms to the role, not the role forming to them. I think it may need to be a new face, a blank slate for this to be achieved as it seems sometimes a big name can overshadow a character rather than compliment it.

I hope it is someone who achieves the intelligence, cleverness and beauty that aspen holds, bringing this wonderful character who means so much to so many to life.

Michael turner has been and always be my favorite artist of worlds where a nerd like me could grow dragonfly wings and experience these things in all their lushness through his his creations. An d while realistically I know a movie may never be as fantastic as the stories are in my minds eye, I still think every effort should be made to do the best possible job by not settling on only achieving a single part of these characters beauty.
