Meet The Greek Gods Of Fantasy Film ‘Percy Jackson’

Think Harry Potter is the only series of young adult-centric fantasy books prime for a movie franchise? Think again. The series of books Percy & The Olympians is set to be turned into a movie (with the presumed title simply as Percy Jackson), with the adapted screenplay already written by Chris Columbus and Craig Titley based on the first book in the series called The Lightning Thief.

The film, which is to be directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter films), is based on the Greek mythology-based books that tells the story of Poseidon’s half-human son, Percy, who sets out on a quest across modern America to prevent a war among the gods.

Speaking of which, most of those who will play the Greek gods have already been cast, they are: Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Uma Thurman as Madusa, Sean Bean as Zeus, Kevin McKidd as Poseidon and Melina Kanakaredes as Athena. The gods Aries, Hades and Persephone have not yet been cast.

The three main teenage characters have already been cast: Logan Lerman (3:10 To Yuma), Alexandra Daddario (All My Children) and Brandon T. Jackson (Alpa Chino from Tropic Thunder).

Since it’s based specifically on the first book in the series, here’s a bit more of an in-depth plot that will most likely be used in the film (courtesy of Wikipedia):

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, it is the story of twelve year old Percy Jackson, a boy with ADHD and Dyslexia. Percy has been going to many different schools, many of them boarding schools, due to the fact that he keeps getting kicked out. His entire life he has had no idea where his father is. But one day during a school field trip, Percy is approached by a mystical creature and defeats it with a sword named Riptide(disguised as a pen) given to him by a teacher. Later that day, Percy and his mom go on a trip to a beach when attacked by a storm. Percy’s friend Grover from school suddenly appears saving Percy, but ultimately failing to save his mom. Grover exposes himself as a Satyr and that Percy has been taken to Camp Half Blood. Percy discovers that he is a demigod and during a Capture the Flag game that his father is Poseidon, the god of the sea. A while later, Chiron, his old teacher and the camp director tells him that his father and uncle Zeus are warring over Zeus’s lost Master Bolt. Now, Percy must journey to find the Zeus’ missing bolt to restore peace in Olympus with Annabeth Chase and Grover the Satyr.

What immediately struck me about this whole idea is how it mixes the Greek god mythology with modern day life. It has the high potential to look extremely cheesy on-screen, and so I remain pensive as to whether or not they can pull this off. However, Columbus has proven himself competent in bringing a fantasy story to life with the first two Harry Potter films which on paper also had the potential to not work on-screen. Luckily, Columbus and subsequent directors such as Alfonso Cuaron found a way to make it work very well.

The term used to describe how the story functions is that they “take some creative license.” Wouldn’t they have to for it to work?…

As far as the casting of the gods goes, it’s kind of a mixed bag. Thurman and McKidd I think are suited to the roles, with the latter being pretty kick ass in any role he takes. But Brosnan, Bean and Kanakeredes are another story - all three are fine performers in their own right, but it seems in this case they have just been chosen for how they look more than the performance they have to give.

An interesting thing to note about the titular teenage boy – the character is written as having both Dyslexia and ADHD. It’s great to see there being a character in such a fantasy series who has real life issues, as opposed to “the perfect young hero.” I just hope they keep that part of the movie version… something tells me they won’t.

As I hinted at in the opening paragraph, the plan is to make this into a full franchise of fantasy films (much like what Harry Potter is now) – each installment based on one of the five original books by Rick Riordan. These books in order are: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian.

We’ll just see if the first film does well at the box office before they can move on to more films. I don’t think the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series has had the success and mainstream name recognition as Harry Potter did (and obviously still does), but you never know, this could catch on and become very successful.

So is there any fans of the source material out there? Do you think this will make a successful movie franchise?

Percy Jackson is set to start shooting sometime this year, and is aimed for a February 2010 release.

  1. I love the Percy Jackson series and I’m excited to see the movie but for some reason I don’t want there to be one. I think it might ruin my look on the books. That’s just what I think

  2. I love the Percy Jackson series but and I am looking forward in seeing the movie, but if you use those actors as the people it makes me mot want to see it. I think you can find people who can act and (RESEMBLE) those characters in age and all. I got through reading the last book “The Last Olympian” and it was great if only Rick Riordan would make more that would be awesome to find out what is still happening in their life’s.

  3. i love these books, and seems like they’re going to ruin it already. i just dont like the castin, but who knows, i might be great. im so faithful towards the books id watch the movie regardless.

  4. well thats retarded. there supposed to be TWELVE not EIGHTEEN. wtf?! learn how to cast people idiots. there gonna be like in their 20′s by the 5th book and they end when they turn 16?! wtf is this i was excited for the movie until i found out they were OLD people playing little children. how stupid.

  5. not one person they casted is right for this movie

  6. I love this series and am sooooo looking forward for the first movie to come out. even though i don’t like the cast, i still wanna watch it. for all those people who never read this is totally missing out something.

  7. btw isnt’ alexandra daddario (<—- correct?) way older than logan lerman? im just soooo hating the cast rite now. this is down rite absurd! Im like totally like mad like rite like now! they didn’t get the cast rite, then the LEAST they can do is make the movie satisfy every watcher!!!!!!!!!!!! whoever picked these characters are the worst! and the guy playing Grover is black! not to be racist, seriously! but Grover is supposed to be white. so… ya. well that’s all i’ve got to say! hehe. PERCABETH 4EVA!~ <3

  8. Wow…I just finished the fifth book last night (it was awesome) and once I heard they were making the movie adaptation I was so excited. I’ve seen the cast and I am having doubts (e.g. Grover is black? I mean I’m black myself and not racist but that is not right)about the quality of the film. Regardless, I’m still going to see the movie just because I love the books so much.

  9. wow i love the books and im really excited to hear they are making the movie but im kinda afraid that it might come out like eragon…(they really messed up that book) plus the actors look 18 when they are supposed to be 12 i was hoping they got actors at least age 15, well Logan Lerman for Percy is really good but Alexandra Daddario is 23 years old! the character(Annabeth) she is playing is supposed to be 12! well i just hope it comes out really good, i know that you cant put a whole book in a 2 hour movie but i hope they do the best they can… ohhh and i hope they keep the eye color like they are suppose to (Annabeth grey eyes like Athena and Percy green eyes like Poseidon)

  10. Casting choices aside, I don’t look for this film to be worth anything. I love the books. Sure, Colombus had great success with HP 1 and 2. HP was a huge blockbuster book, those movies had to be good and got the budget needed to shine. But look what happened to Chronicles of Narnia, Inkheart, Eragon, and even the American Girl movies. I sort of liked Chronicles of Narnia, and the kids seemed age appropriate to the series, but that second movie took some huge liberties with the plot. Probably I’ll Netflix it, but don’t go looking for my money at the box office.

  11. By far, GROOVER is the worst ever!
It’s so wrong, he should be ginger and white skined *not being racist*

  12. Zoe Niteshade rocks she is an awesome charecter!!!!

  13. Well I must say that I am sad that Brandon T. Jackson is playing Grover, he was perfect for Tropic Thunder which i gave a ***** in comedy. But I do not think he will fit in Greek Mythology. I was thinking Grover should have been a Hispanic 12-13 year old boy that has some facial hair. Alexandra Daddario is not someone I would say who would look like Annabeth but I think they got Percy right. What I thought Annabeth should look like is her hair should have a bright yellow or gold-ish kind of hair. Sadly they are all a lot older than at least 14 but it would take A LOT of make up to make them seem younger. I still cannot wait until the movie comes out but I still think the actors and actresses should be replaced.

  14. I really think they should replace the lady who plays annabeth cause i’m a huge fan and i’ve read all five books and the role of annabeth isn’t working for her the grover is kinda managable and I guess the rest of the crew is ok

  15. hey dont get me wrong but I mean PLEASE rethink the parts played for percy and anabeth
ive read all the books and i dont know how there going to pull off a movie thats decent with this cast

  16. Yeah I think that Grover should be ginger and white (NOT being racist) and Alexandra Daddario should NOT have been cast as Annabeth!!! I have seen pictures of scenes from the movie, and she’s not even going to be BLONDE!!!! This is NOT a great casting job!!!!!!

  17. I think that grover is all right. a ginger would look too weird on a satyr when i’m pretty back in the day no greeks were like that and annabeth will be fine she is good looking. i just hope they don’t make it like eragon, a great book but terrible moive

  18. Alexandra Daddario is waaaaay too old to play Annabeth. 23? that’s almost twice Annabeth’s age! Logan lerman, who is like 16, was already pushing the age limit, but 23? The person playing Grover is okay, I guess. I’m not going to be picky about an actor being black or white. I think the person playing Luke, Jake Abel, was PERFECT for the role!

  19. I don’t see anything wrong with Grover being African american. I don’t recall them being super specific with him in the book (I wish I had the first book with me), but I really don’t see the big deal and why people are so up in arms about it. Annabeth is ok, too–they aren’t going to change it, so yeah, get over it.

I’m kind of sad that Clarisse isn’t going to be in it.

  20. Okay, here’s the thing. I think movie producers are losing their minds. (no offence.) All right, maybe it’s just me, but when there is one extremely successfull movie, I think that other movie producers should see that. For example, Harry Potter has been one of the most successful movies of all time. Anyone disagree? Who did they cast for Harry Potter?

OH I KNOW! people who were relitively the same age as people in the book and looked the part. Being 12 or 14 years off from the charactor isn’t exactly what I mean Alexandra and Brandon T. Why can’t the producers see that?

I could be wrong, but it seems the producers of Percy Jackson are so focused on making the movie cool, that their not thinking about who could portray the charactor best. It’d be kinda cool for people a few years younger than me to have a Harry Potter of their own. I think my third grade sister would enjoy a middle school Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Not a wanabe Twilight.

Don’t get me wrong, I want the movie to be stinking amazing and regardless of the cast I’ll see it within the first week it comes out.

  21. Oh and by the way, Annabeth needs to at least dye her hair, at the very least. I have nothing against Grover being African American, it’s just the whole age thing. Oh yeah, that does make me sad that Clarise isn’t going to be in it. darn.

  22. i think that Percy should be older so we could relate to his ‘trials’. just saying!!
    ps, i heart luke ;)

  23. I think the characters are way to old!

  24. I really think that the cast for Percy Jackson is going to be a little off. I mean Annabeth is supposed to be twelve, and the last time I checked Alexandra is like twenty something. Also Logan Lerman is seventeen and that is way too old in my mind. Everything else seems good and all, but I think the casting directors should have done a better job. Also the clip they showed for the movie in some theaters made me worried. It looked like Olympus was in ashes like it was in the last book. Well I was almost ready to cry when I saw the clip, not because it was bad, but because I was so happy that people were actually making a movie out of it. I just hope that the clip that they showed was a teaser video or else I’m worried about it. But no matter what, I will probably go to the movie the first day it comes out.

  25. i personally dont like the actors because their too old i mean in the fist book their supposed to be twwlve! in this anabeth is like 23!

  26. Well, I just started reading the series after finishing the harry potter series, being that I am only on the 4th book of the Percy Jackson series, I totally feel that the cast is a little too old to portray these roles, in my opinion they should of taken a little more effort on finding younger children that can play the roles and as this movie grows and if it becomes the next harry potter series in regards to the movies, it’s going to be hilarious watching a person being like 22 portraying a 16 yr old character. One good thing is I love that they have Pierce Brosnan as Chiron “CLASSIC”
