I hope you’ve got a few minutes because we have five videos for you to watch that are promoting multiple upcoming television and movie releases. From the dirty humor of Eastbound & Down to the family-friendly Despicable Me, there is a little of everything.
Angelina Jolie takes down six armed attackers in the TV spot for Salt, while the new TV spot for The Last Airbender takes on the element of action. The trailer for the 7th season of Entourage takes a serious turn for the melodramatic, but the 2nd trailer for Universal’s tentpole animation Despicable Me stuffs a handful of humor into two and a half minutes.
Finally, Eastbound & Down is ready for its comeback with a Dark Knight-inspired teaser. I’m not sure anybody saw that connection coming.
Salt TV Spot
The latest TV spot for Salt does its best to give the film’s plot in a condensed, 30-second rush. It’s always a pleasure to see Angelina Jolie in the action role. With Megan Fox’s Jonah Hex a box office dud this weekend, Jolie still remains the premier leading lady for sexy action.
It would seem the plot of Salt would serve better if the trailers didn’t work so hard to give it away. But the film must have an extra trick or two up its sleeve, unless they are just afraid the action genre won’t sell itself. Either way, the TV spot is filled with action and makes 30 seconds feel more like five.
The Last Airbender TV Spot
The Last Airbender has had the pleasure of displaying its gorgeous CGI in the trailers, even if the acting has been completely hidden. With generic trailer music, the action-packed TV spot flashes title cards on you so fast it is impossible to keep up. Still, what matters is the visual work in M. Night Shyamalan’s epic film and it continues to impress.
I still can’t help but remain skeptical by the fact I’ve heard maybe three lines of dialogue in all of the promotional footage. Of course, it is an action film dominated by visuals, but that doesn’t mean there are only a handful of lines in the entire film. Audiences have been anxiously awaiting this film since the first images showed up and this TV spot shouldn’t slow the anticipation down.
On an additional note, the movie’s release date has been pushed up a day to July 1st in hopes of capitalizing even more on the holiday.
Despicable Me Trailer #2
The newest trailer for Despicable Me has been released and it continues to look promising. Universal is definitely banking on the film’s success, as evident by a massive promotional campaign across the nation. The latest trailer is more keen on displaying the story, rather than punch lines.
The one aspect of Despicable Me that looks fantastic is the collection of minions that Steve Carell’s character uses as henchmen. They steal every moment they are on screen, similar to Scrat from the Ice Age films. The movie looks like a lot of light-hearted fun, turning evil villain stereotypes into family-friendly action animation.
Eastbound & Down: Season 2 Trailer
HBO now has a trailer for the 2nd season of its cult comedy series, Eastbound & Down. The foul-mouthed comedy features Danny McBride as down-and-out Major League phenom Kenny Powers. If you didn’t see the first season, it is a must watch and one of the funniest shows on pay-cable.
The trailer is pretty cool. Instead of showing footage or trying to prove its worth, it is a direct parody of The Dark Knight teaser. Behind a dark skull with baseball seams on it emerge beams of light and dialogue from the first season over rising music. Kenny Powers is most definitely back!
The new season will focus on Kenny Powers’ attempt to revive his baseball career by playing in the Mexican circuit. Ana de la Reguera will co-star as Kenny Powers’ new love interest.
Entourage: Season 7 Trailer
Another HBO series with a new trailer is Entourage. The 7th season trailer is a concoction of what we have come to expect from the series – friends on the edge, celebrity cameos, half-naked women and Vincent Chase on location.
I won’t judge the upcoming season, but many hardcore fans have admitted to losing interest in the show. This season will need to bring something huge to the table and regain its pay-cable prowess. The trailer does nothing of the sorts, providing only exposition and a lack of major drama.
