Just as the 2015 summer movie season is beginning to cool down, the fall movie season is gearing up for a full-throttle assault on your cinematic senses. Though typically studios reserve their high powered blockbuster fodder for the vacationing throngs that flock to the theaters in the mid-year months, keeping the drama for cooler weather, there are always a handful of tentpoles that arrive in the final four months of any year.
Two films with the potential to perform well at the box office – Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Victor Frankenstein – have now gained posters, providing audiences with tiny glimpses into the film’s respective fantastical worlds. As an added bonus, 20th Century Fox has unveiled a primer on The Flare, the terrifying virus that rocks the world of The Maze Runner. Despite its seemingly cute exterior, this video suggests all sorts of horrifying effects from this dreaded disease. Give that clip a watch, above.
“The maze was just the beginning,” promises the new Scorch Trials poster, showing Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) looking pensively in the distance, no doubt wary of what’s possible after their experience in The Maze. Based on the young adult novel by James Dashner, Scorch Trials is the second installment in the Maze Runner series and reunites the first movie’s young cast with director Wes Ball.
Scorch Trials aims to deepen the dystopian world introduced in last year’s The Maze Runner, throwing our heroes right in the middle of a resistance group who fights for survival in the barren wastelands of “the scorch.” Co-starring Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Revolution), Patricia Clarkson (reprising her role as Ava Paige), and Lili Taylor (American Crime, Hemlock Grove), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials could end up offering an overall bigger and better experience than its predecessor.

Hot on the heels of the Victor Frankenstein trailer release comes a new poster that offers a shrouded glimpse of the dreaded Frankenstein monster, forged of the fires of the (not so) good doctor’s brazen insolence. Though the story of Dr. Frankenstein is well-trod territory at this point, Victor Frankenstein gives us the added twist of telling the tale from the perspective of Igor, the doctor’s beloved lab-assistant.
Starring Daniel Radcliffe as Igor and James McAvoy as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the movie promises to be a fresh take on the weary classic. This should be no surprise considering the script comes from Max Landis, whose Chronicle and American Ultra scripts likewise subverted tropes and expectations. Upping the potential cool factor is director Paul McGuigan (Sherlock, the criminally underrated Push) whose eye for detail should make Victor Frankenstein interesting to see. Also co-starring Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey, Black Mirror), Andrew Scott (Sherlock), and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Game of Thrones.

While neither Scorch Trials nor Victor Frankenstein are your typical awards-season friendly autumnal movie fare, they are both welcome additions to a season known for having more than its fair share of Oscar bait and/or overwrought melodrama. It’s nice for the studios to inject a little bit of more pure popcorn fun (hopefully, the good kind) into the season and give us a little something more light-weight to look forward.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opens in U.S. theaters on September 18th, 2015. Victor Frankenstein will follow suit on November 25th, 2015.
