Kurt Sutter, creator of Sons of Anarchy, has shared new production images from the upcoming spin-off series, Mayans MC . This is Sutter’s third consecutive TV show collaboration with FX, as part of his overall development deal with the network. Prior to Mayans MC and following the conclusion to Sons of Anarchy, Sutter produced The Bastard Executioner, a medieval themed series that only last one season.

For Mayans MC, Elgin James, a filmmaker and a former member of Friends Stand United, was brought in as co-creator and showrunner - with the intention of giving the Sons of Anarchy spinoff TV series a aesthetic that would more genuinely representative of modern Latino culture.

The first of theses Mayans MC images (shared by Sutter via Instagram) depicts a familiar scene to any Sons of Anarchy fans: club members at a meeting table, having an intense conversation. Emilio Rivera is in the first picture, reprising his role as Marcus Alvarez, President of the Mayan MC. On the side is Raymond Cruz (Tuco from Breaking Bad), who just joined the series. The second image depicts the filming of a scene from Mayans MC on a sound stage.

Here is FX's official synopsis for Mayans MC:

Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.

While the series boasts a new cast with a new story and showrunner, traces of Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy are still readily apparent. EZ sounds as conflicted as Jax was in the original series and EZ’s relationship with Emily sounds (too?) close to the Jax and Tara dynamic. However, certain additions do give the series a chance at standing on its own.

Elgin James is a new set of eyes on the same old concept and can be a breath of fresh air, while the change of scenery—trading in Sons of Anarchy’s Northern California hamlet for the dusty frontier of the California/Mexico border—can give the series its own visual lexicon to color in.

On a story and character level, both of EZ’s parents are alive in Mayans and aren’t set to be part of the criminal element that Gemma was back in Sons of Anarchy. Whereas Gemma always pulled Jax back into the MC, rumors suggest EZ’s mother, Marisol, is trying to pull him away from the gang lifestyle.

Mayans MC is currently filming. Season 1 is expected to premiere later this year.
