With the success of District 9 - both financially and critically - South African director Neill Blomkamp earned the golden ticket to make whatever original (i.e. not Halo) sci-fi project he wanted next. That project is the ambitious and mysterious Elysium, a film set in the future where the people of a post-apocalyptic Earth desperately wish for a lifestyle upgrade via a chance to live on the luxurious space station Elysium.

The official Elysium synopsis (below) was released only a few weeks ago and prior to that we had nothing but casting news and a few set photos of the protagonist (played by Matt Damon) and his high tech exoskeleton suit. Now we have our first official look at Damon armed and ready for battle.

The first official still from Elysium comes from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly – scanned from The Playlist - and features Matt Damon in the same bloodied and tattered beige shirt and mechanical augmentations as in earlier set photos, this time wielding some firepower. Click to enlarge:

District 9 fans will immediately find the style, tech and weaponry very familiar.

For interested moviegoers, Blomkamp will finally be sharing details on the film himself at Comic-Con next week where Elysium will have its own presentation as part of the Sony Pictures panel Friday, July 13, from 4:35-6:35pm. The sci-fi heavy panel will also host presentations for Total Recall and Looper.

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Joining Matt Damon in cast are Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Michael Shanks, Alice Braga, Faran Tahir, Diego Luna and Wagner MouraElysium releases March 1st, 2013.

  1. “and his high-tech exoskeleton suit”

    Haha…that was a good one !
Looks very very High – tech :)

    • Any thoughts on the image?

    • Yes, it is very high-tech in a realistic way.
OK, when you compare it to a Iron-Man suit it is low-tech, but the Iron-Man suit is much more fiction and would be extreme expensive.
This is a more grounded, economical version, which could be done in the near future, IMO.

  2. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am all for Blomkamp’s take on sci-fi movies. Gritty that is futuristic but with a dose of realistic details, weapons and technology that don’t seem that far-fetched, and hopefully political and social undertones that made District 9 a favorite for me…

Do we know yet if it’s going to be filmed in the same faux-documentary style that District 9 was shot?

  3. A bald Damon, now that’s different.

    • Secretary Rhodes, related to one Cecil John Rhodes I presume…

  4. He looks like a younger version of John McClain from Die Hard with a Vengence. A lot of stars go bald for the rugged, down-on-your-luck badass look.

    Seems to work for him.

  5. Looks pretty cool. Now I know what John Cena looks like bald

  6. I think if the film is anything in the style like District 9 then this film will be a success and I enjoy Damon as well. I have a lot of faith in Blomkamp in creating that epic sci-fi movie experience that I think Hollywood is lacking. This is one of my anticipated movies for 2013. I can’t wait!

  7. CHEMRAIL=CHEMTRAILS!!!

    • Sigh… don’t start all that stuff.. Reminds me of my conspiricy theorist mate that used to make me watch youtube videos about Chemtrails, the illuminati, HAARP etc…

  8. MATT DAMON!

  9. At 1st glance Damon looks like the MMA fighter Tito Ortiz in this photo. ;)
This is another panel I will be checking in on here during Comic-Con.

  10. The setup sounds awfully similar to “Battle Angel Alita”, (apart from the robot part), possibly with more espionage or a heist etc…

  11. Looks like an interesting concept. I believe Matt Damon is the best actor outside of Denzel Washington of this generation. As a matter of fact, a few friends and I are writing a script this summer that features both of them. You see, here’s the basic synopsis: A top CIA operative (Harrison Ford) is kidnapped by extremists as bait, which causes an Admiral (Washington) to be given the duties of heading a team of high ranking soldiers to rescue him and find out why he was captured. Damon plays the young, naive soldier that the Admiral becomes a mentor to. Christian Bale is the soldier with a few personal issues and when it is revealed later in the story that there may be a double agent inside the group, it is assumed that it is him even though it turns out not to be. Will Smith is the street-smart soldier. Gerard Butler is the tough guy/enforcer soldier. Sean Bean is the mysterious soldier who is later revealed to be the double agent. Natalie Portman is a top doctor in the CIA. Anthony Hopkins is a top CIA agent who ends up being the one calling the shots. Gary Oldman is an extremist that captures the CIA operative. Brooklyn Decker is the young soldier’s girlfriend. Adam Sandler is the comic relief character as a CIA contact to the team.

    • (*o*)

  12. I like Damon he’s a pretty good actor and the storyline doesn’t sound all that bad if the trailer looks good I’ll give it a shot

  13. Sounds like the plow was inspired by the Astro Boy movie, haha.

Still, I’m looking forward to it given the director’s previous movie.

    • That “Astro Boy” movie was pure sacrilege. :(

  14. Matt Damon dressed to kill capitalists…

  15. I’m Matt Damon! LOL!

    • America! F-Yeah!

  16. This looks like it’ll be one to watch.

Matt Damon’s great in this kind of role, and he had some stand out action scenes in the Bourne Series. Should be awesome.

  17. Matt Damon is a great action actor. I miss him in roles like this. The Bourne movies were amazing. And he was also great in Green Zone. Should be a good movie.

  18. Take more family outings and simply enjoy being a mother.
You’re still a mom in one sense, but not in the way you’re used
to. What the passenger did not realise was that intermittently the songs were exceedingly
    derogative of their customer.
