Matt Damon In Talks For Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Elysium’

Deadline is reporting that actor Matt Damon is in talks to join District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s next feature, which is a sci-fi/allegory entitled Elysium.

If talks go well, Damon would be the second reported addition to the cast of Elysium: we reported earlier that District 9 star Sharlto Copely was already cast in the film.

As previously stated, there are no specific details about what the plot of Elysium would entail, except for the scant tidbits that Blomkamp has already dropped. We know that Elysium takes place 150 years from now, on a planet other than Earth, and will address social/political issues in much the same way that District 9 did. The title also refers to the Elysian Fields, which in Greek mythology exists as a sort of utopia for the souls of the underworld who are worthy to be there.

As of October 2009, Blomkamp had struck a financing deal with Media Rights Capital, who would allow him the creative freedom to realize Elysium the way he wants to, for a budget greater than D9‘s $30 million price tag, but still cheaper than the $100 million+ cost of some other F/X-heavy blockbusters. It was said around that same time in ’09 that Blomkamp would be starting script and effects work on the film immediately, which means he’s likely well into the process at this point. The director himself offered a quote saying that Elysium will be “violent, very violent, and very unique hopefully.”

Obviously having a star of Damon’s caliber onboard would help MRC lure potential distributors into a lucrative deal for Elysium – though a modest budget and the pitch line “From the director and star of District 9” is probably a good selling point in its own right.

Check back soon, as there is sure to be some word on wether or not Matt Damon Joins Elysium.

  1. I will see anything Blomkamp directs and Damon is my favorite actor. This sounds pretty money.

  2. YES! Cant wait for True Grit.

  3. Sounds good, but every time I read or hear Matt Damons name I think of it being said like on Team America.
