Matt Damon Confirms Bourne 4 Is In Progress

4 years ago by

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne

The Bourne trilogy is one of hell of a kick ass set of films, with each film getting progressively more intense and exciting. The character of Jason Bourne is pretty much the blueprint for modern action men (yes, even more than Bond) and will go down in cinematic history as such.

But with The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass (who helmed the second and third, but not the first), star Matt Damon and everyone else involved made a fantastic part three in the series, one which simultaneously left things ambiguous and yet still closed off the series in an entirely satisfying and fitting way.

But you know that since the three films combined made a few dozen million under a whopping $1 billion worldwide (with the third one alone making over $400 million), that they are going to at least entertain the idea of doing another one (in fact, news came out last year that Universal had bought the complete rights to the Bourne character, as well as first look options on other Robert Ludlum books). With the ambiguous way Ultimatum ended, it has left the door open for them to go back to the series for another go at it.

It was already confirmed last year that another Bourne film was on the way, and that Damon and Greengrass would be returning (after them swearing left, right and center that there wouldn’t be another). But it’s always great to hear it from the horses mouth (so to speak), so via an interview with Parade Magazine Matt Damon confirmed that a Bourne 4 is definitely already being worked on:

Q: Is it official that you’ll return as Jason Bourne for a fourth time?

A: We’re working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum. But the director, Paul Greengrass, is busy and I am too, so we’ll see what happens.

Q: Are you ready to be Bourne again?

A: Listen, when I did the first movie, I was 29 years old. I am 37 now, and after a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That’s just the way it is.

It seems that apart from both Damon and Greengrass working on other things, it’s the fact that Damon is a little bit older than he was when he first played the character back in 2002, that’s a point of concern for him. Clearly the man is in great shape as he showed in Ultimatum (among other films), but it’s true that when you get older, even if your mind is ready for a full day’s physical work, your body might not be.

When I saw The Bourne Ultimatum in the theater, I walked out wholly satisfied with the way they wrapped up the series, leaving you wanting more but at the same time happy that it was the end of the trilogy. But it’s been a couple of years since we saw Jason Bourne on the big screen and I must admit I am now all for a fourth film. There’ve been some good action films since Ultimatum’s release but Bourne always gave us action plus intelligence, and I think another film would not only make serious bank like the first three, but also would be a project welcomed by fans and critics alike.

Of course since this film wouldn’t be based on any of the books by Robert Ludlum (which the first three were), it might not turn out to be as good as the others. It’ll be interesting to see if they will try and replicate the spirit of the first three or if they’ll put an entirely different spin on it. I suspect a combination of the two.

So even though this isn’t an announcement saying Damon and Greengrass have everything worked out and that shooting is going to begin soon, it’s still some sort of confirmation that it is happening – and I’m very pleased.

Do you think there should be a Bourne 4? Or is it best left at just the three?

  1. The only book that is remotely similar to the movie was the Bourne Identity. Although amazing in their own respect, the last two movies are entirely different than the books. In fact I’ve never seen a movie based on a book with less similarities than this series. I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about regarding the name of the movie. Every single screen play has been original!

  2. I definitly think that they wrapped up the three films perfectly and nobody could ever ask or more but everybody wants to see bourne again kicking goverment ass in several countries.

    • You are missing it if you think the reason we want another Bourne movie is just to get more action movie ass kicking. Ultimatum left many unanswered questions. We are dying to know what Nicky was talking about in the diner. Fans also want to see Jason and Nicky develop a love interest. Nicky’s comments hint that there is a lot we don’t know between Jason’s training and his first assignment.

  3. I only saw the first two films and never could get into the whole thing. I mean I understood Bourne’s dillema and the wanting to get his memory back but it was something that on the whole didn’t catch my interests. I always kinda equated it to Robert De Niro’s “Ronin” in a way.

You know and always knew the guy had a past, but it was never ever made clear what that was?! But I like Matt Damon and I think it will be a good movie, and if nothing else they should do the film to satisfy the fan base and after that be done with it and move on, there by allowing Jason Bourne into that all important cinematic history. God speed and happy trails….

  4. In order to understand his past..you have to watch Bourne Ultimatim..it briefly shows his life prior to converting to the dark side so to speak. I loved how they wrapped up all 3, but at the end of the 3rd, it left you wanting more because of the way it ended, i couldn’t believe originally thye were saying no more. But I’m definitely looking forward to the 4th.

  5. Hopefully they’ll leave the fight scenes easy to view, like in the first film. That “lets pretend you’re there” shaky camera work spoils things to an extent.

  6. There have been two other books The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Betrayal but neither was a patch on the first 3 by Ludlum, hope the script is good!

  7. i want bourne 4 !

  8. I just rewatched all 3 parts of the trilogy… and now I really want to see a 4th installment…

I really loved it! good action, good story, it’s intense and fast paced… nothing more I can ask from an action movie!

This is now on par with James Bond films now… even though Daniel Craig did a REALLY good job bringing the Bond spirit back =b

  9. I agree about the action and the story, but can’t see how Bond could even be considered in the same context. I see Bond as a joke when compared to the Bourne films.
    Bourne-intense, exciting, interesting.
Bond- boring, repetitive, dumbed-down, poorly acted and directed, with a serious lack of creativity.
Bourne is a “quantum” leap above Bond.

  10. I think that because the Bourne films are so much more intriguing than Bond and there’s a lot more character development and complexity in the story, that people worry that a 4th film will ruin it for them if it flops.
With Bond there’s nothing to risk. The writers and directors know that all they have to do is tell the same formulaic story with a few new cool gadgets and stunts, and millions of young boys, heavily laden with synaptic-connection-overriding testosterone in them, will flock to their simple little ditty to see the latest Bond bimbo flash her cleavage.
Bourne plays to a more mature and discerning audience, evidenced by the comments made here, who aren’t going to leave the theater raving about the movie because the stunts were cool and they’d like to shank the new empty-headed, bikini clad, fills-the-seats, flavor of the year model/”actress”.
There’s a lot more a stake with Bourne. If your going to make a film that doesn’t rely on “sex sells”, you know you have to use your other head; the one with the brain in it. And you know you have to appeal to your fans heads, which is why I anxiously anticipate a fourth installment. Will they continue on the higher road or turn it into another sell out?
    More Bourne, less Bond!!

  11. I think the first 3 movies were fantastic, and the story line has been kept very narrow as of what they say about Bourne’s previews life (David Webb). They however, do talk about the goverment’s supremacy to get thngs done and how well they are in control of everything and everyone under the roof, so that being said, i think this movies were great because all of the situations throughout the triligy show how technologically advanced our goverment really is and how easy they can track any target they so deisre around the globe.

So all those elements together plus the great acting skills of Matt Damon, and company, well if you combine all those things together, the end result will be an awesome outcome no matter how many more installments they come up with, we would love to see more, and Us fans are craving more Bourne, at least i do…

My idea for a Bourne 4 tittle: Bourne Betrayal, because if they use the other possible tittle (Bourne Legacy). Is like talking about Bourne’s Chronicles, which they don’t wanna do because that would end the Bourne franchise, so people don’t, i repeat, DO NOT use Bourne Legacy, because that’s gonna kill it or if u plan to do a fifth installment then name it Lecacy and seal the deal, and we all move on,

Anyways Happy New Year and I really look forth to see what other people think about this…

  12. WOW YOU're boring man

  13. Every movie ever made after a book leaves chunks of the story out.
Its much harder to actualy play out every part of a book in a movie.
And for good reson. It keeps the story simple for audiances who haven't read the book. so I “personaly”… like the way the movie's story goes.

(kids? I'm so glad they killed her off in the second movie. How the hell are you going to go on crazy spy missions with your family?? haha)

  14. I hope to see the Bourne 4 movie soon. From a supply and demand aspect, as well as a monetery and artistic venture. This has to come into being. If no one else does it, then I promise you, I will do it myself!

  15. matt damon in that interview says he's “37 now”. He was born in 1970,which would make him 40 this year. It says at the top that this is from march 2009… ???? What gives?

  16. Go For It Damon!

  17. Go For It Damon!

  18. It would be great to have a Bourne 4 movie, especially if it is more like the #1, which had a bit of everything and the camera was not so shaky as in #2 and #3. As for the script being not based on a book, the three Bourne movies were only loosely based on the books (actually, the third one had almost nothing to do with the Ultimatum book) so that should not be an issue.

  19. The 3 bourne films were based not on the books, but on an adaptation and beyond of the 3 books. Bourne flics based only on the books would have been boring compared to what is. So, bourne 4 will not be based on the books at all,,,,,probably, although there is a terrorist aspect in Ultimatum. So the sky is the limit right? The director of “identity” has been associated with the 2 subsequent films so the franchise is far from adrift. 4 will be great because it will be made when it is! “Hello Landy”, I can hardly wait.

    • this guy is a genius.

  20. I for one would love to see part 4 come out! I love what the caracter stands for, does anyone else empathise with the caracter? I wish they didn’t use the bad language they dont need that to make bourne a tough guy actions speek louder than words and bourne is always full of action. So please make another one!

    • I agree. Bourne was so well written for the movies that watching it really had you on his side the whole time. Despite that his past was shady I still felt a dedication to the Bourne because he was seeking redemption which is great in most movies similar. Damon just added much more to the character as well. Its too bad he won’t be in the fourth. It’s hard to imagine him no being in that role. DiCaprio is the only one I can see pulling it off after watching Inception. I can only hope.

  21. I have mixed feelings about the new movie, no Matt Damon is a big risk, like when they replaced the Bond actor, obviously because of age and stuff like that but then you risk franchise death if you pick a “Timothy Dalton” for example. Damon had a unique ability to balance all the aspects of the character while still holding his own in action sequences which for me made the trilogy much more enjoyable. Like I said I have mixed feelings but I am hopeful. The Bourne series is a great read, but the movies themselves are completely different so I hope they still please audiences as much as they have in the past.

  22. Bourne 3 was the best. I can’t wait for Bourne 4!

  23. Always Wanted A Bourne 4 To Hit The Screens… Hopefully They’ll Nake It I teresting In Terms Of How He’s Survived And Thrived Having Tp Live Off Grid In This Over-Cinnected Age, Without Cheaping Off To Living In Some South American BS Setting. Will It Be The CIA Hunting Him Again As Some Kind Of Fall Guy? Lets Hope Not… Was What Most Of It’s Already Been About… Will It Be An Indirect Act Of Terrorism That Deeply Affects His New And Presumably Peaceful Life? Probably… Added With It Involving A Top Priority Target From The Past Both Knowing Of Each Other But Possibly Never Crossing Paths (Remember Unblemished Record Of Success With Bourne Until Conscience/Programming Crisis Involving The African Dictator) For Some Reason… Makes Some Sense… Will Sell Tickets And Fits In To All Things Yesteryear And Today Both On And Off Screen. We’ll See. CIA Is Always Just Around The Corner, Plugged Into Nearly Everything… So That Part Is Easiest. Loads Of Hand To Hand “Identity Style” And Insanely Plausible Life Saving Stunts (“He Drove Off The Roof!”) Will Be Refreshing To See… As Nithing Like Bourne’s Styles Have Veen Come Close To… And They’ve Nailed It Insofar As We The Audience Refuse To Suspend Disbelief It’s Anybody Else Other Than The One And Only Jason Bourne… Hope You Really Kick A$$ Is This One Matt… And Nit Rely So Much On Greengrass… He Knows Giw To Film You Sure… But You Have To Combine Action From 1 & 3 And Blow That Out If The Water Using The Same Super Clever Speed And Intelligence Only Bourne Possesses. Can It Be Done? I Actually Believe So… But It’s All About The Best Action Writers And Matt Being At The Absolute Pinnacle. Anything Less Will Leave Bourne’s Legacy Scarred In Our Hearts Forever. Looking Forward To Tge Last And ULTIMATE Bourne… No Doubt.

  24. I hope Matt plays the part , because ive herd its went downhill, i herd its going to be like bourne is goin to be more like 007 in the sense every once in a while their will b a new agent to take on the bourne role ! I do have my fingers crossed matt will come back but i dont think it looks to good at the moment !

  25. while making #4, do 5,6,7,8,9,10.

  26. All MATT DAMON HAS TO DO IS GET REALLY FIT AND HE COULD HANDLE IT AT ANY AGE. AS FAR AS A PLOT MAYBE SOMEONE KIDNAPS PAMELA LANDINGS KID AND SHE NEEDS BOURNE’S HELP TO GET THEM BACK? JUST A THOUGHT.

  27. I love matt damon and he is the one of the best actor wich I know around the world. with best regards matt.

  28.
