Matt Damon Hoping To Make Another Bourne Movie

The fourth film in the Bourne franchise is happening but it’s been confirmed for a while that star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass will not be involved. Instead, the studio is pushing forward with The Bourne Legacy which, despite its title, does not feature the character of Jason Bourne at all.

The Bourne Legacy will follow another new character who has to deal with the results of the events of the Matt Damon trilogy, while Jason Bourne still lives in the background. While everyone can agree we’d rather have Greengrass and Damon back to make a legitimate sequel, at least this studio-motivated idea allows for them to return in the future should Greengrass gain interest.

The main reason Damon isn’t back for Legacy is because he has publicly stated on many occasions that he will not make a Bourne movie without Paul. Instead, Tony Gilroy was brought in to write and direct the fourth Bourne installment which will have nothing to do with the story of Eric Lustbader’s novel for which they’re using the title from.

We don’t know much about the history of this new character other than he’s an assassin who went through the same training/brainwashing Bourne went through. As for who will play the new covert elite, the latest rumors have James Franco as a candidate for the part.

If it does well, we can guarantee another sequel for the new character or Bourne’s, or even a mix of the two where they work together. But again, that depends on Paul Greengrass’ return as Matt Damon is very hopeful that he can play Bourne again a few years down the line. In speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Damon spoke honestly of his hopes and the situation.

“I really hope it’s going to happen. It’s really up to Paul Greengrass, the director. I’ve always said I won’t do it without him and I think it would be a bad idea to do it without Paul.”

If the pair should decide to work with Universal Pictures again on Bourne 5, it will have to be a few years into the future as Greengrass has other projects lined up first.

“I think Paul’s probably going to do one or two other films that he’s got kind of cooking but after that [maybe they would start working on a Bourne film],” he continued. “I think it’s kind of the thing where enough time has passed that I think it won’t matter if we wait five more years to do it.”

Unlike most trilogies of the last decade, Greengrass and Damon actually succeeded in delivering a third installment with Ultimatum that was not only good, but arguably the best of the series. When and if they return, they want to ensure they’re coming back to make another solid film for fans of the franchise.

“We just want to make sure if we do it, that we do it right. There’s been a lot of pressure for us to do it obviously but that’s that moment I think where you got to step back and make sure you’re not making a mistake. So when it feels like the right time, I think Paul would be open to doing it.”

Paul, Matt, you guys should have made Bourne 4 instead of The Green Zone.

  1. I was unaware that Damon was married to Greengrass.

    • when and if they happen to do another bourne movie w/ matt damon at least part of the movie should tell more about what Julia Stiles character (Nicolette “Nicky” Parsons) hinted at towards the end of bourne Ultimatum while (Jason Bourne) and (Nicolette “Nicky” Parsons) are sitting in the diner (Nicolette “Nicky” Parsons) hinted at the, what i believe is a prior relationship between the two possibly a romantic interest i believe that is what was hinted at, if true i think it would develop both characters greatly and would be a smart move/choice by both witer and director

      • Damn thats wierd.I had the exact same vision as you for the next movie. It should be centered around Nicky parsons relationship with Bourne,as she was such a mystery character in the last three movies.
Dependant on the success of Bourne Legacy- Jerremy Renner’s assignment/ mission could involve killing Nicky Parsons.
It would be a good path to follow as Jason Bournes amnesia problem has been ended, he has found absolution in that sense.

      • I agree I would want dem 2 hav a relationship

  2. I still don’t understand his absence in Legacy…

  3. He should of just made the fourth movie, I don’t want to wait for him and Greengrass return for a fifth movie it’s taking too long.

  4. Please, no more Jason Bourne. Why Hollywood, why?

  5. This is like making a Bond 23 a movie that stars agent 008. What’s the point? If it’s not Jason Bourne, don’t call it a Bourne movie.

    • I agree 100%! :)

    • that is true if it is matt damon put no the same without the trilogy that does not work. Matt and I will not bother to view it

  6. That pic is hilarious

It looks like Damon is holding his breath until Greengras is handed a Bourne project.

  7. I enjoyed the first 3 Bourne movies and I really wished Matt was in the 4th film. I would be very happy if the 4th film is a solid movie and they bring back Matt for a 5th film.

  8. lol I just love how one-sided is the article. No mention of the director for Bourne 4 and the fact that he’s the one who directed the first one and produced the other two. Oh and, his camera shots aren’t shaky.

    • Hmmm… that would be NO on all accounts. Doug Liman directed the first one and involved as producer in all 3 while Tony Gilroy was on writing duties only. May want to check the facts before making such definite statements.

  9. As far as I am concerned Greengrass ruined the Bourne films, Identity is easily the best and Ultimatum is definitely the worst IMO, maybe they should just cast someone else and actually read Robert Ludlum’s books rather than just looking on the cover.
I generally found these to be very disappointing films.

    • The Bourne books have absolutely nothing to do with the film except the name of a couple of the characters and that face that he has amnesia. But, as good as Robert Ludlum wrote the books, I loved the movies. I don’t understand why they think that there is not anymore for Jason Bourne to do when Ludlum’s books plus Lusbaders Bourne books have plenty of different and more up to date stories. Matt Damon will always be Bourne to me (not Richard Chamberlain as in the first attempt at a movie). When your public wants and looks forward to a movie you would make and then you make a string of forgettable ones just so your director will do it with you makes no sense to me. If you don’t like Bourne, ok, but there is plenty of us who do and look forward to another movie.

  10. Even though the first 3 films were bases LOOSLY on books there is more material for Jason Bourne (there are more than 3 books). Why do this other story that isnt part of the books? Seems like a waste. Just make the next Bourne movie with Greengrass and Damon.

  11. Identity was by far the best of the three; the only one with real character. The Greengrass films were badly filmed, strangely written, and even at times unimpressively acted. There are apparently more evil chaps at CIA than SPECTRE ever boasted. The Ludlum books had nothing to do with CIA. I know we all hated Bush, but, I mean, sometimes things are just out of hand.

In Bourne 5, Greengrass will handcam a 3 hour train ride where Bourne talks with people he doesn’t know about how the CIA is probably stealing their children and waterboarding their spouses, and then at the end they will go to Texas and there will be a handcam fight between the Secret Service and Bourne, and then maybe some handcam footage of Bourne being manhandled by his cell mate in state pen, which Bourne will rightfully blame on W. The end.

    • Tropical, who hated W? Not Native Americans (and he’s one of us). Some in the CIA did because he stopped something called Murder Inc., which was a Clinton kill squad. Remember, Gilroy used the date of Bourne’s joining the Company as 1999, two years prior to W’s swearing in. We all wonder how it was that the Clintons came to the White House with only the lint in their pockets, yet walked out 8 years later with 20 million, and then within a few years, were 35 million richer (according to Lloyds of London). Maybe they got paid off for allowing 9 million Tarhumara Native Americans to starve to death in the late 90s (via PRI and Monsanto), or made a deal to kill all those Navajo…Hate W? He stopped the slaughter.

  12. I bet the lead character in The Bourne Legacy is Leonid Arkadin. It has to be………

    • Meriden it isnt

  13. After 3 movies about Bourne staring Matt Damon, to have the 4th one without him, is just plain stupid! It want be the same without Damon in it! Everybody knows Damon as Jason Bourne! Damon could make 10 of these Bourne movies, and everybody would love them. I have watched the 3 movies over and over, and I still think they are fantastic. They are none stop action movies that keep you sitting on the edge of your chair. If it is not Matt Damon staring in it, it ain’t a Jason Bourne movie! Don’t mess up my Bourne movie set with some clown trying to act like Damon! You have got the best man for the Bourne Legacy movie, and that is Matt Damon.

    • yes, your are right about that. without Matt Damon, Jason Bourne is nothing

  14. I hope this dont screw it up. This is an excellent series of movies that I hope continue. They are very entertaining and as young as Damon is could last a long while.

  15. it would be quite a good idea if the new movie should circle on the life of Leonid Danilovich Arkadin, Bourne’s nemesis and equal in capabilities, also a product of Treadstone 71.A good hit if they would uncover both of their backgrounds and kill each other in the end.

  16. I can’t understand why Matt Damon who is turning out way forgettable movies, insists on doing a film with Paul Greengrass. Esepcially when his fans want more of Jason Bourne. If you read Ludlum’s novels the only thing Jason Bourne had to do with them at all was that he had amnesia and his name was Jason Bourne. So, No Matt Damon although good, is not the only one who could do Jason Bourne. Mark Valley could, and he can act.

  17. I hope it fails. Without Greengrass and Damon you have crap. I for one won’t waste my money on a ticket.

  18. Best films I have ever watched. If Matt wants to wait for Greengrass and we get a movie as good as Ultimatum I say good for him. It will be well worth the wait. Using anyone else to play Bourne would pale by comparison. Matt was outstanding as was the direction of this film. Hope you two can get together. Thanks for the three so far!

    • The Bourne series are easily the best action movies of the last decade or so. Period. Without Damon they just wouldn’t be the same. And without the same director, equally weird. I love these movies. On a big sceen they are simply gripping. Matt, get your director and get an0ther movie of equal calibre done – soon!! Nothing can touch you two when you make a Bourne movie.

  19. Matt should get his priorities straight. A lot of us never cared for his work until Identity came out. These days, it’s almost a military prerequisite—go to a party or to watch a game, then after that “Wanna watch a Bourne flick?” Answer is always yes. Why isn’t Damon supporting the troops? He wants us to help with the kids, how about a little support for us, as well, Mateo amigo?

  20. Now and then film makers find the ultimate movie magic combination in the trio of script, director and actor. The only grand trio and trilogy before Bourne was the John Ford-John Wayne Cavalry Trilogy; Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum set the bar extremely high. I hope The Bourne Legacy isn’t DOA and that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will make a fifth Bourne, but I seriously fear Bourne four has poisoned the well.

    • No, I think Damon has poisoned the well. His actions lately seem to be very self-centered and unlike who we see Bourne as. Damon has ceased being a hero to the military and to most of his base. The only thing I’ve ever watched with him in it was the Bourne movies. They fit him perfectly, but he walked away. Let Gilroy find a new man, a younger man, and make more of the series. Bourne has out-done Bond in all repects, and even the makes of Bond movies are forced to admit that. tsi

  21. Hm, maybe Damon better tap his helmet and get in the game. Most of us (militry folk and support hwo know we’re all Jason Bournes :) no longer care if he’s in it or someone else. Maybe he’s worried about something. He is getting a little long in the tooth… Gilroy, FIND someone and get it done. You’re a master writer (three know-tows to you, pappy). We want more Bourne. Happy hunting, but please, get it done!

  22. Got to add, I was so sick of Damon’s acting like a girly-boy, I wrote my own story, Bourne Escape. Nope, no copy write infringement, because it’ll never be more than personal entertainment, a writing exercise because I was off work and unable to write for months (injun no sweat, injun no sleep…or write :)
My best to Mr. Gilroy, but please, find a replacement Bourne. Damon has lost a lot of his friends (fans, if you will) by dissing us. tsi

    • Ur ideas R LAME so just sut ur facc

  23. without Matt Damon, Jason Bourne is nothing we want matt demon in 4th part

  24. 1) He’s lost his fan base for this. 2) He’s too old, anyway. 3) He’s acting like a girly-boy. I used to feel the same till i looked into it. now, I just don’t care. I wrote my own version, and then got into things with a little help to do a series on an actions officer (which the bourne character is). He simply lost us by the millions. My vote goes for whoever wil deliver.

    best to you, and love!

    tsi

  25. Tish and Pish to any who are upset by Matt Damon not doing a 4th Bourne – yes we want him to, no-one wants a good story to end, but end they sometimes must – the good times can’t go on forever – not in life and not in film – sadly…

But, we all know, they did make 3 legend films – not that easy, so well done.

  26. Glad to hear from you.

Personal reasons: Last year, my stepson came home from Iraq with problems. After watching the Bourne movies, he was normal again, not suicidal (he tried 3 times in as many months to end it). Now he’s gotten help–after being told he had died in Iraq and wasn’t entitled to help! The military wants more Bourne movies because they’re medicinal. _I_ want more for the same reason. Damon’s making a fool of himself supporting stupid causes, like bad teachers and bad policies, and not the people. Uni will go with the flow and Damon will be out ASAP. There are better, younger actors eager to take his place and it’ll happen. Why is he so against Gilroy? As a writer, I see the writer as a great in a cesspool of sycophants. With all due respect to his abilities, Damon is too in love with his mirror, apparently.

    Niio,

    tsi

  27. Wow, I amazed at the stupidity. I mean, allow Greengrass and Damon to make the forth and it is such a safe bet of a good movie. Instead, in true Hollywood fashion, they take the name, make a completely different film with different actors/directors – that is a cert flop and hope to make money?? LOL Amazed how stupid people are.

The first 3 films were excellent imo and very mature pieces of action film making. Sad they just couldn’t continue and went out there way to destroy the successful franchise.

    • Greengrass is good, but didn’t want to make any Bourne movies. Gilroy is a fantastic writer and I look forward to seeing what he does with the Legacy. As Leman’s protégée. I would really rather see a Native American playing Bourne: the character is from Nixa, Missouri, Indian Country. At the very least, no more Yankees playing Native Americans :) Bad news, the kid is back in the VA. PTSDs.

  28. please please make bourne 4 with matt damon – i watch a lot of good films
and the bourne series tops the list BY FAR!!!!!

    • Bourne would be better off without him. He’s ruined his career as far as a lot of Native Americans are concerned. He’s a white Yankee, and the character is from Nixa, Missouri, Indian Country. While he was still great in the game, he’s thrown it all away to play savior of lousy schools and mighty whity Nazism (sorry to have to say that last, but it’s quite true). He is Hollywood, and that’s what they’re like.

  29. I will not be bothering with this film purely due to the lack of the title character. How about making another Terminator in which there are no Terminators or maybe a new Pirates Of The Caribbean wih no pirates.

    • oi, for sue. but, i like bourne, not pirates of terminators. people are fighting for their lives, for their future, weeping over dreams brought to ruin by this government. reality sells, everything else is for the kiddies. haw’? reality is alive and to live; anything else pales by comparison. bourne lives.
