@ Daniel F: I think I enjoyed puzzling out the stories about the characters myself in Donnie Darko, the theatrical version. And the change in sountrack threw me in the Director’s cut.

Watch “Under the Hood” first then the Directors cut for the best “Watchmen” experience !!!

Thanks Gottarhyme, I’ll tell ya I’m about 35 minutes into watching the Directors Cut and its already better!
All the cuts so far were the segways between scenes. Watching this directors cut is incredible so far!!! Really improves on the overall film!!!

I think I will have to own ‘the Watchmen’, Director’s cut from your enthusiastic recommendation. It is out on DVD hopefully?

As for ‘Donnie Darko’, Director’s cut, lets just say a lot of the mystery and enigma is gone. Also, the Director chose a different soundtrack for the opening credits, and Donnie’s and Gretchen’s descent down the stairs hand in hand after the *ahem* love scene.

Some things are explained that are better left a mystery in my opinion.

Wow just watched, “Under The Hood” on my Tales from the Black Freighter” dvd and its the perfect pre-setup for The film !!!
It explains the origins and helps ground the film, “Watchmen”. Amazing retro prolog.

Gotterhyme, your saying the directors cut of “Donnie Darko” sucked compared to the theatrical version.
Hmmm just wondering what was the prob “unless its a huge spoiler”.
I’ve got it here on dvd but haven’t watched it yet.

(Also) I usually throw them out but the cardboard sleeve has a real cool hologram cover !!!

The discs also have cool images rather then just silver or black titles.
I recommend the Directors Cut!!! Can’t beat it.

I purchased my copy from Frys in Burbank. Its like an big electronic store. They had it on sale for $17.22 (list $22.99) and it came with a Frys gift card that was worth $5 bucks.
The theatrical 1 disc dvd was on sale for $14.99. It has no bonus features.

The 2 disc Directors cut has a bonus feature on the phenomenon that the graphic novel created. 11 Watchmen Journals, a music video and the “Theatrical Version” as the Digital copy. The Bonus features and Digital copy are on the second disc.
(No commentary unless you get the Bluray directors cut)
The run time is 186 min. with the 24 additional minutes included.
There’s also a $10 off coupon for the Ultimate Collectors edition (coming December 09) if you register online to WarnerBros.com/rewards.

Amazon.com e-mailed me that since I bought the director’s cut (which haven’t arrived yet) I could download it to my computer, which I did. Haven’t watched it yet but when I went to see if it would play, it said I had 24 hours to see it if I continued, or cancel and see it later. I cancelled it so I could see it later. Where did you buy yours from?

I was extremely disappointed with ‘Donnie Darko’ when it came out. It ruined the original film for me. I do not wish to repeat the experience!

I haven’t watched my copy yet but early online reviews are saying that the Directors Cut is better then the theatrical version. They’re saying the film flows better.

For me I always saw Watchmen as a more realistic take on the superhero genre and that’s how it contrasted with all other superhero stories before it. In the graphic novel the fight scenes were mostly not over the top. I think that suited the world of the watchmen story a lot more than the stylized fighting we got in the movie. It made it more believable that this is what could happen if regular people decided to put on costumes and fight crime.

Anyway as I said for me that wasn’t the main weakness. The weakness was due to the difficult nature of adapting long graphic novels and books and that is compression. Certain details always have to be omitted to fit into a reasonable running time. I felt Watchmen omitted a bit too many in the beginning.

For me the best graphic novel to movie adaptation is Ghost World. American Splendor isn’t too shabby either.

The problem I had with Watchmen were 1) some scenes were just too graphic 2) the love scene could have been cut or toned down 3) Mr. Manhattan needed a diaper . Otherwise, I liked it. I felt Haley was the best part of the movie and think he will make a great Freddy Gruger.
