How Will Matilda the Musical Differ From 90s Movie?

Matilda getting scolded

Over the years, Matilda has received various adaptations, most notably the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito. Mara Wilson starred as the titular character with Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey, Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull, Rhea Perlman as Zinnia Wormwood, and DeVito as Matilda's father, Harry Wormwood. Although the movie did not fare well at the box office, it was well-received by critics, garnering a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The latest Matilda adaptation stands out as the only musical cinematic version. Although the 90s movie sported a unique visual take on the classic tale, at times almost a black comedy, the new film's music-infused story carries a more fantastical aesthetic. Over the years following the original movie's release, Ferris has received nothing but praise for her compellingly terrifying role as Miss Trunchbull. Thompson's new take on the headmistress may rival Ferris' as critics have applauded the actor for her work, calling the performance one to remember.

The Matilda the Musical movie has reduced its musical number count in half from the original stage productions. This was due to the film's much shorter runtime. Tim Minchin, the songwriter behind the original musical, wrote a brand-new closing song, and Christopher Nightingale contributed new music to the score. Although Matilda the Musical has already been released in the UK on 25 November, audiences will have to wait until December 9 for the worldwide release and December 25 to see the movie on Netflix.
