The New Marvel Movie Logos
Bendis describes how he and other Marvel Comic writers had to read over the scripts for Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor. When asked more about his role with the movies and it is his job to just read over scripts and make sure it’s okay, he responded:
“No, this is a little different than how Hollywood usually does it, which is a compliment to Kevin. Usually, Hollywood just does what it does. I know there are some comic book movies I hear that the people never even read a comic book based on the thing they’re working on.”
“They’ve asked me to be part of this team of guys who they pick their brains and take their advice. And for me it’s great to watch these writers deal with it and handle it. Watching them is a lot of fun.”
“And they fly us out. Like, when Kenneth Branagh was hired for Thor, they flew us out and we got to spend the day listening to a seven-hour performance of what he imagines the Thor movie would be.”
Wow, I wish I got to be a part of that. Was it really seven hours long, Brian?
“No, but it was Shakespearean, with flourishes. It was cool. It was a lot of fun. My wife goes, okay, that one I’m jealous of. She’s got a crush on him. And honestly, he’s not a let-down. I can see it. I can understand it. You’re spending enough time with someone that you know if they’re cool. And he’s cool.”
All great and positive news surround the very young Marvel Studios. As I said before, they’ve only really done two projects so the next few years will be a real test to measure how successful they can be developing their own projects for the big screen.
I find it funny that he points out that some other comic book films are made by folks who know nothing about the source material and we’ve seen how that usually ends out…
If it all works for Marvel and if these movies are financially successful (an easy expectation), then we’ll be seeing a big increase in production at Marve Studios and future financing to support up to four feature films a year in the not too distant future. That means all those multi-picture contracts we’re seeing for talent including Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson will be put to some good use – we’ve already heard talk of a new Nick Fury solo feature.
I love how Marvel is focused on working their movies correctly, using people who care about their goals and about the source material and having Marvel Comics involved for input and advice. It seems all is well and soon, we’ll start hearing updates for Captain America.
Which Marvel flick are you most excited for and are you confident each will reach the same success as last summer’s Iron Man?
Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010. The following summer, Thor opens May 20, 2011 and The First Avenger: Captain America opens July 22, 2011. Last but not least, we have the Avengers kicking off the following summer, May 4, 2012.

The Ed norton hulk was pretty decent IMO. It was interesting and the effects were good too along with the story.
Isn’t this supposed to be about Thor and Iron Man II?
I’m excited about Thor. It’s giving more depth to the Marvel Universe for non-comic reading fans of Marvel. It’s a great story and KB will obviously bring an exciting and elegant STORY (unlike a lot of comicbook movie makers who only focus on good action).
Including Thor in a high capacity will add a timelessness to the Avengers, which will NOT bomb considering Penn is on as the writer and the sheer number of A-list actors on helm for the project: Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle (and possibly Edward Norton)! All of the great ACTING will keep the action and storyline in check for the Avengers and hopefully it’ll be a series, hopefully no more than 2 or 3. Optimistically speaking, this will be the best of the Marvel movies.
Also, don’t forget that the actor for Captain America has yet to be named, so add him into the list with Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The only way this movie will bomb is if they bring Eric Bana back as the Hulk or use the Abomination as the only bad guy, neither of which will happen.
Iron Man 2 is said to be better than the first and will introduce War Machine with Don Cheadle, who is a much better actor than Terrance Howard and much easier to work with, supposedly. So, the action will be undeniably better since we know what Iron Man can do already and they won’t have to waste time having Downey getting used to being a “superhero.”
What’s with all the negativity about the Avengers? I don’t get it!
@LD
Zak Penn gets me a bit worried.
what design is marvel going to use for thor’s costume and when can we expect to see some images of chris hemsworth as the mighty thor?
First off, i think everyone of these movies will be incredible! i liked the new hulk better than iron man, and apparently i am almost the only one, because iron man spent too much time with tony stark getting used to being iron man. yes, its his origin story so they had to but my opinion stays the same. i think the avengers film will destroy all box office records and will be the best super hero movie ever made. it almost has to with the actors, money and wait. capt. america will be better than thor, in my estimation, because he is not only the first avenger but his name contains “America”, so it would almost be sacreligious for it to suck. hollywood has a tendency to use movies to try and boost american morale, but i think that will only benefit the capt. america movie seeing as its the characters job to do that. thor will be a little hard for some audiences to swallow because he is a god and the supernatural elements it will contain. i love japanese anime, and i think the thor movie will have that sort of feel to it (just more american comic book than japanese anime) because of the supernatural, not super human, elements. thor will be a good film, but prolly not as well accepted, i think. iron man 2 is gonna be the stuff! i just hope we get a villian that we see throughout the entire film. i would not be disappointed to see the hulk possibly begin as a misunderstood character who becomes good (story of hulks life) because it would be cool to see the avengers fight him, and loose! will there be no spidey in this avengers film? i got high hopes, i got high apple pie in the sky hopes!
