Marvel Updates: Branagh’s Thor, & Iron Man 2 Script Is Awesome

Thor is arguably the toughest character and film to sell out of the upcoming slate of movies in development at Marvel Studios, but it is the one I’m most excited for.

Besides my interest in the character, what really grabs my interest is the man in charge: Kenneth Branagh.

The multi-talented Shakespearian actor/writer/director is an unbeatable choice to helm Thor and bring him to the silver screen and better yet, he loves the interconnectivity between the Marvel character, the universe and what they are attempting to do with the film.

There’s been nothing but praise for the man coming from Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada and president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, and now we have even more good stuff to say about the man.

In one of their meetings the other week, Branagh met with Quesada, Feige and others about the movie and he gave a performance to enact the film for those who were there. Quesada described it in his column as one of his best “highlights” working for Marvel:

“It was performance art… Kevin would give us the establishment of the shot and the situation: ‘Here we are. We’re in (take your pick of location). And here’s Odin and he’s coming up to (pick a character.)’ And then Kenneth would come in and give you the color commentary. ‘Odin has an air of majesty to him’ and he’d act out the Odin part or the Thor part. So we sat there and literally got a three-hour one-man show from Kenneth Branagh. It was fantastic.”

Quesada then went on to explain how Branagh is heavily focused on character development in the film and how that’s what will really stand out in his movie:

“It’s not just big hammers and capes and things like that. It’s about what makes the character tick. There’s definitely a reason for Thor, a reason for him being and a very deep family relationship and story in the movie that I think is going to be very cool.”

Adding to this, comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis spoke with Newsarama about Branagh’s Thor, the Iron Man 2 script and why fans of the comics should be excited for the upcoming movies…

Firstly, Bendis talked about what he’s currently writing for the Comics publisher (check out the Newsarama interview linked below if you’re interested) then went into his involvement with the films and how much fun it is. For the Iron Man fans out there, he’s said he read the script for it “30 times now” and that it’s very good.

  1. The Ed norton hulk was pretty decent IMO. It was interesting and the effects were good too along with the story.

  2. Isn’t this supposed to be about Thor and Iron Man II?

I’m excited about Thor. It’s giving more depth to the Marvel Universe for non-comic reading fans of Marvel. It’s a great story and KB will obviously bring an exciting and elegant STORY (unlike a lot of comicbook movie makers who only focus on good action).

Including Thor in a high capacity will add a timelessness to the Avengers, which will NOT bomb considering Penn is on as the writer and the sheer number of A-list actors on helm for the project: Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle (and possibly Edward Norton)! All of the great ACTING will keep the action and storyline in check for the Avengers and hopefully it’ll be a series, hopefully no more than 2 or 3. Optimistically speaking, this will be the best of the Marvel movies.

Also, don’t forget that the actor for Captain America has yet to be named, so add him into the list with Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The only way this movie will bomb is if they bring Eric Bana back as the Hulk or use the Abomination as the only bad guy, neither of which will happen.

Iron Man 2 is said to be better than the first and will introduce War Machine with Don Cheadle, who is a much better actor than Terrance Howard and much easier to work with, supposedly. So, the action will be undeniably better since we know what Iron Man can do already and they won’t have to waste time having Downey getting used to being a “superhero.”

What’s with all the negativity about the Avengers? I don’t get it!

  3. @LD
Zak Penn gets me a bit worried.

  4. what design is marvel going to use for thor’s costume and when can we expect to see some images of chris hemsworth as the mighty thor?

  5. First off, i think everyone of these movies will be incredible! i liked the new hulk better than iron man, and apparently i am almost the only one, because iron man spent too much time with tony stark getting used to being iron man. yes, its his origin story so they had to but my opinion stays the same. i think the avengers film will destroy all box office records and will be the best super hero movie ever made. it almost has to with the actors, money and wait. capt. america will be better than thor, in my estimation, because he is not only the first avenger but his name contains “America”, so it would almost be sacreligious for it to suck. hollywood has a tendency to use movies to try and boost american morale, but i think that will only benefit the capt. america movie seeing as its the characters job to do that. thor will be a little hard for some audiences to swallow because he is a god and the supernatural elements it will contain. i love japanese anime, and i think the thor movie will have that sort of feel to it (just more american comic book than japanese anime) because of the supernatural, not super human, elements. thor will be a good film, but prolly not as well accepted, i think. iron man 2 is gonna be the stuff! i just hope we get a villian that we see throughout the entire film. i would not be disappointed to see the hulk possibly begin as a misunderstood character who becomes good (story of hulks life) because it would be cool to see the avengers fight him, and loose! will there be no spidey in this avengers film? i got high hopes, i got high apple pie in the sky hopes!
