Here's every Marvel movie and TV show releasing in 2022. Despite the abundance of titles released in the past decade, titles based on beloved Marvel Comics are showing no signs of slowing down. 2022 is set to become another big year, especially for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Disney+. By expanding to Disney+ in 2021, Marvel received a new avenue to explore through another small-screen platform.
2021 was a banner year for Marvel movies and TV shows, kicking off with the debut of the MCU's first Phase 4 title, WandaVision. The coronavirus pandemic thwarted the original release schedule for the majority of the slate, but thanks to Disney+, Marvel Studios was still able to churn out must-watch content. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki soon followed, leading into Phase 4's first official movie, Black Widow. Next came Marvel's What If, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Hawkeye before Spider-Man: No Way Home closed out Marvel's 2021 schedule.
While Disney is the big name linked to the majority of Marvel titles, Sony will also be present in 2022 like they were in 2021 with Venom: Let There Be Carnage's October 2021 release as part of the so-called Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC). At the time of writing, fans can look forward to eleven Marvel movies and TV shows in 2022, barring any further delays.
Morbius – January 28, 2022
The first Marvel property expected to release is Morbius, the feature film from Sony which will feature Jared Leto in the titular role. The movie will follow Michael Morbius, aka "Morbius, the Living Vampire," to fans of Marvel Comics as he attempts to find a cure after being afflicted by a blood disease resulting in his vampire transformation. The film directed by Daniel Espinosa is set within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe alongside the characters of Venom and its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Aside from Michael Keaton, who is reprising his Vulture role, Morbius will feature Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, Jared Harris, and Al Madrigal. After missing the original release date during the summer of 2020 due to coronavirus delays, Morbius will release in late January 2022.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – May 6, 2022
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will mark the first MCU movie to release in 2022 and the fifth installment of Phase 4. Sam Raimi’s sequel is expected to lean more into horror as the movie follows the events of Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Loki. Elizabeth Olsen will be joining Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange by reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, but she likely won’t be an ally. Spider-Man: No Way Home will also affect the Doctor Strange sequel, considering the focus on the Multiverse. Other notable characters set to appear include Wong (Benedict Wong), Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), and Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Xochitl Gomez will also be making her MCU debut as America Chavez.
Thor: Love and Thunder – July 8, 2022
Taika Waititi’s upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder, is releasing in the midst of the summer blockbuster season after being delayed multiple times due to coronavirus-related delays. The movie will see Chris Hemsworth’s Thor reunite with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as she takes on the moniker of Mighty Thor while dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Aside from Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Love and Thunder will also feature the debut of Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale. With Waititi at the helm of the sequel, expectations are high considering the filmmaker’s vibrant transformation of the God of Thunder’s arc. There will also be ample nods to comics like the mystical goats and a classic Thor costume.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) – October 7, 2022
Four years after Mile Morales gained wide recognition through 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the character will return for the much-anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). After taking on the role of Spider-Man while dealing with parallel universes, this time around, Miles will be dealing with new aspects of the aspect. Like last time, he won't be alone as Gwen Stacey is back as Spider-Woman, while the sequel will also feature Jake Johnson back voicing Peter B. Parker. After having a brief cameo in Into the Spider-Verse, Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 will get a larger role as Issa Rae's Spider-Woman and the Japanese Spider-Man joins the mix. With Part One scheduled for October 2022, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two) is expected to release sometime in 2023.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – November 11, 2022
Following the success of Ryan Coogler's award-winning MCU installment, Black Panther, a sequel went into development. The follow-up officially titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will mark the 30th movie in the MCU and the seventh film to make up Phase 4. Sadly, the sequel will be without the leading actor who portrayed the titular hero since his debut as T'Challa in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Rather than recast the role of Black Panther following Chadwick Boseman's death, Marvel Studios decided to shift focus on other characters like Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), and Okoye (Danai Gurira) while the plot continues to celebrate the Wakandan culture.
Moon Knight – TBA
Despite being made for Disney+, the upcoming Moon Knight series will be one of the darkest series to be set within the MCU. In fact, the character of Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, is like Marvel's version of Batman. Oscar Isaac will portray the character, who is a former Marine with a dissociative identity disorder that becomes the host of a moon god known as Khonshu. The show from Jeremy Slater will consist of six episodes, with the first-look footage released as part of Disney+ Day 2021. Though there's no release date, Moon Knight is expected to release in the first half of 2022.
She-Hulk – TBA
Another Disney+ Marvel show to drop its first footage as part of Disney+ Day was She-Hulk, the Phase 4 project created by Jessica Gao. The show features Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany as the titular character, who also goes by Jessica Walters. Aside from sharing the same green-tinted transformation as her cousin, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who also stars in the series, Jessica is also a lawyer. By doing so, She-Hulk will double as a legal drama while documenting conflict caused by Tim Roth's Abomination and Jameela Jamil's Titania, a known She-Hulk rival in Marvel Comics.
Ms. Marvel – TBA
The MCU will be making history with the franchise's first Muslim superhero, thanks to the debut of teenager Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel. Newcomer Iman Vellani will play the character in the Disney+ show created by Bisha K. Ali. Kamala is an Avengers superfan from Jersey City who enjoys writing Captain Marvel fanfiction before gaining her own powers. While Ms. Marvel will serve as Kamala Khan's MCU origins, the character will continue to grow arc by appearing in 2023's The Marvels, which serves as a sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel. Ms. Marvel is expected to premiere in the middle of 2022.
Secret Invasion – TBA
Unlike the aforementioned Disney+ Marvel shows set to release in 2022, the footage introduced during Disney+ Day for Secret Invasion was very brief. A scruffy-looking Nick Fury was shown for the show, which will center on him and former SHIELD colleague Maria Hill as they deal with Skrulls invading earth. Though plot points are being kept under wraps, the show is based on the Secret Invasion story from Marvel Comics. Kingsley Ben-Adir has reportedly been cast as Secret Invasion's villain while Olivia Coleman, Emilia Clarke, and Christopher McDonald will appear. Ben Mendelsohn will also make his MCU return as Fury's Skrull ally, Talos.
I Am Groot - TBA
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) won't be the only animated Marvel project to debut in 2022 as I Am Groot is set to premiere sometime in the next 12 months. James Gunn confirmed I Am Groot's 2022 arrival, which should excite fans eager to get their Baby Groot fix in the form of shorts. The shorts will follow the beloved figure's galactic adventures alongside familiar and new faces.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special - December 2022
In addition to I Am Groot, Disney+ will also be gifting Marvel fans The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, scheduled to release in December 2022. The live-action special will the Guardians characters played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, and Karen Gillan for a holiday-centric adventure. It will also feature the arrival of a brand-new MCU character. The Marvel title will be filmed as part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's production while acting as a lead-in to the 2023 MCU movie.
