Marvel has dropped a stunning new trailer advertising the X-Men's upcoming Hellfire Gala, which the publisher claims will change the fate of the entire planet. The X-Men franchise is going from strength to strength right now, with the entire mutant race gathering on the living island of Krakoa, but June will see the most unexpected X-Men event of all, as the mutants host the first Hellfire Gala.

The story of the Hellfire Gala will be told over the course of 12 issues, dominating the entire X-line in June. The centerpiece is Planet-Size X-Men #1, by Gerry Duggan (MaraudersSavage Avengers) and Pepe Larraz (House of X). "Make no mistake -- this is... absolutely the most important issue of the month," editor Jordan D. White insisted in an official press statement.

Marvel has dropped a new trailer for the Hellfire Gala, and - like most of the promotions so far - it focuses on the new costumes the X-Men will be wearing at the event. Marvel has been taking a smart approach with marketing the Hellfire Gala, keeping the focus on the characters' outfits and avoiding revealing almost anything about the plot itself. There'll be the unveiling of a new X-Men team, and many believe Storm will be leading a mutant mission to Mars, but Marvel hasn't actually hinted at just what story could possibly take a full 12 issues to tell. According to this trailer teaser, though, the Hellfire Gala will change the fate of the entire planet.

The X-Men have invited a curious group to the gala, ranging from world leaders to representatives of terrorist organizations like AIM, and naturally there are a number of superheroes in attendance. It's particularly interesting to see Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom on the guest list because there have been hints there's something magical about the living island of Krakoa. The one time Strange visited the mutant nation, he immediately sensed powerful magic at work and had to remind the X-Men that everything happening on this plane of reality is his business.

But how will the heroes, villains, and governments of the world react to the boldness of mutantkind's vision of the future? The X-Men have seemed to be pushing the planet towards World War III, with Russia in particular hostile to the mutant nation. It's quite possible the mutants hope their plans, accompanied by the introduction of a new team of X-Men, will shock and awe humanity into choosing to stand down. If so, they are sure to be disappointed at the response.
