Marvel's The Inhumans have had a rocky road to the screen. Despite once being initially announced as a major feature film in Marvel's Phase 3 lineup (right in between Avengers 3 and 4), the film was bumped back by Spider-Man: Homecoming' and Ant-Man and the Wasp's addition to the schedule. It then was removed from the release schedule entirely. Was inner studio strife the cause for the shake up or frustration with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s handling of its Inhuman elements? We may never know all the details, but fortunately for fans of those afflicted by the Terrigen Mists, an Inhumans television mini-series is now on track for a September 26th, 2017 on ABC, as well as a premiere in IMAX theaters two weeks prior on Labor Day weekend.

There have been more than a few not-so-subtle hints that Vin Diesel (Furious 7) was on the books to play Black Bolt, the leader of the Inhumans. Unfortunately, the change in format (likely necessitating a large cut in pay) makes it unlikely that the Hollywood superstar will still be involved. If this is true, Marvel will need to find a new actor with a commanding presence (Black Bolt doesn't speak) to fill the role.

Consider professional wrestler Cody Rhodes' name officially thrown in the hat. Rhodes recently appeared in an episode of Arrow, but in a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, the former WWE star, and son of the late Dusty Rhodes, discussed his aspiration to lead The Inhumans.

"I will fully disclose that I have been actively pursuing a couple of roles, [Black Bolt] being one. I now have uprooted, moved to LA, to look into acting more, especially after the Arrow episode. So that would mean the world to me if that were to happen. And we’re actively looking into it. I’m all about it."

During the interview, Rhodes proved his comic nerd cred by debating that Cyclops is better than the overrated Wolverine. ("Hugh Jackman Wolverine is pretty special," he clarified, "but I’m just talking from the pages.") Rhodes also professed Black Bolt as "one of the best characters in all comics. The idea that a simple, spoken word could blow a room up is just… I dig everything that is Black Bolt."

Rhodes has enthusiasm in spades and that certainly counts for something. He would also likely be closer to Marvel TV's price range than Vin Diesel. It's also not unheard of for pro wrestlers to transfer their charisma and showmanship to the screen (see Dwayne Johnson's career). Whether or not he's the right man for the role, he certainly seems to fall into the correct category of prospective candidates (sub-superstar, name-brand performer with a superhero build).
