marvel runaways movie Marvel Studios Sets March 2011 Start Date For Runaways

We don’t know how many movies Marvel Studios has in the early stages of development but we do definitely know as of today which film is coming next!

2011 will see the introductory solo films of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, followed by the epic team-up adventure, The Avengers, in 2012. For a long time we have pondered what film would accompany The Avengers that year and we can now say that it’ll definitely be Runaways.

In July, we found out that Runaways was targeting a production start somewhere in the first half of 2011, between January and July but today, Production Weekly confirms that it will in fact being principal photography in March, one month after The Avengers begins shooting.

The timeframe update came through a Tweet several hours ago:

Update: Marvel’s “The Runaways” (aka “Small Faces”), is scheduled to begin filming in March in L.A.

I don’t understand the “Small Faces” part of it but I certainly hope Runaways will not be retitled to that… It could be a code name for the project, similar to “Frostbite” for the Captain America shoot.

Debuting in 2003 from creators Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Runaways is an award-winning comic series which follows the story of a group of six teenagers who learn that their parents are super-villains. Together they gather weapons and run away to learn more about themselves and the powers they have, using them for good. It takes place in LA so it’s good to know they’re shooting on location.

As I mentioned in our last discussion on Runaways, this puts Marvel on course to continue with their plan of at least two features a year. The question now becomes, will those be the only two Marvel Studios movies hitting theaters in 2012? There’s Iron Man 3 and Ant-Man which we know are coming eventually, perhaps in 2013, and then there’s Dr. Strange, Iron Fist and others that have writers and are in pre-production.

As we enter the Fall season, expect the rumors about casting the young heroes to start rolling in. We at least don’t have to deal with that on the director front with Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) having already signed for the job.

Written by Drew Pearce, Runaways will likely open in the summer of 2012.

  1. Awesome News!!! This may seem corny but far from it. Well written stories and done from the makers themselves. Hoepfully this will snatch away Fox’s X-Men crowd AND Twighlight. Looking foward to it, rest assured there will be cameos and easter eggs to the rest of Marvel U!!!

  2. I would like to start a motion towards whoever is taking part in the making of this movie. pleeeeease don’t use big name actors for the kids. at least not all of them. you need a strong ensemble cast to pull this adaption off and i feel that completely unknown kids (granted, ones who are actually actors) would do the greatest justice to the characters and make them far more accessible to the target audience. plus it would save money and they could afford to put some big names as the members of The Pride to draw in their fan bases as well. All those in favor?

    • Aye

    • Cross-Over!

They met up with Young Avengers during Civil War if that means anything to ya 😉

        • You should give Runaways a read. A really good series. One of marvel’s best.

          • *I* will give it a read.

  3. I want to see Prince NAMOR, THE SUB-MARINER

cant u people get ur facts straight! lmao

    • Lol really?? Cool fact

  5. Big yawn…

  6. awesome. cant wait to see some casting for this one. I really hope that they done ruin this franchise, as Runaways was what got me into comics in the first place.

I am worried about how theyre going to handle Molly, however, considering that she cant be a mutant thanks to Fox… eh, theyll probably just change the word mutant to something else.

    • I don’t think omitting the ‘mutant’ will make it any different. Frankly, I’m hoping they don’t ruin the whole thing by skirting around that factoid or ruin Molly by providing a lame cop-out explanation of her abilities.

  7. i think at least one person whos been in a popular movie should be in this but not a famous one like for instance the lesbian ex from scott pilgrim vs the world or the guy who is the lead in the new tron movie. and for sure one of the parents needs to be a star celebrity just to bring presence and leadership to that part of the cast like lawrence fishbourne or jada pinket smith

    • Laurence Fishburne would be perfect for Mr. Wilder

    • Wow,thanks for the info. Looking them up now.I’m interested in hearing what they sound like.

  8. God I hope Zac Efron is in this. NOT EVEN KIDDING.
