Marvel Studios Has Movies Planned Through to 2021

Two-and-a-half years ago, Marvel President of Consumer Products Paul Gitter spoke about the future of Marvel Studios and how they were beginning to brand around the tagline “Avengers Assemble.” He revealed that there was a master plan in place all way up to 2017.

Since that time, Captain America, Thor, The Avengers and most recently, Iron Man 3, hit theaters, breaking multiple records around the world – all of which was in the planning stages as far back as 2006. Today, Marvel has at least another four years planned out beyond 2017.

In speaking with Wired about the young Marvel Studios and how they began their now-headline-breaking panels at Comic-Con as far back as 2006, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige teased that there’s much more to come.

“I could arguably say what we’re planning for the year 2021. Will that happen? I don’t know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening.”

Going forward, it’s about growing the franchise beyond the characters who’ve seen success in theaters already.

“Five years ago, looking at our plan, we knew that if Avengers was going to work, the movies had to stand alone. Now we have to prove to the studio that we’re more than just these five characters, these five franchises.”

So just how does Feige and Marvel orchestrate a massive shared film universe, managing multiple in-production projects at once, while also picking and choosing obscure characters from Marvel Comics to invest in (i.e. Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, etc.)?

“Disney has allowed us to be a relatively small, tight-knit brain trust. These billion-dollar ventures come down to 10 people or fewer in a room saying, ‘You know what would be cool?’”

The big questions of course are what additional new characters and properties could make their way to theaters in between threequels to Captain AmericaThor and The Avengers and will the studio ever push three movies out in one year? We know Ant-Man comes after The Avengers: Age of Ultron and sometime after that Doctor Strange will get his own film.

As it stands, Disney and Marvel Studios planted their feet in the ground earlier this summer to lay claim to key summer weekends in 2016 and 2017 but they’re not prepared to discuss what those projects are quite yet. Feige previously said we’d learn about those in 2014, and we expect that means it’ll be part of their Comic-Con panel next year.

In the meantime, Marvel needs to keep fans focused on what’s coming out now. Iron Man 3 offered the strongest start imaginable to Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, cementing its place as the fourth top-grossing film of all-time, sitting right behind The Avengers (and James Cameron). Going forward however, Marvel needs to promote the sequels to Thor (watch the new trailer!) and Captain America which are being used to test non-summer dates for the studio. Thor: The Dark World releases this November, Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April, and even Guardians of the Galaxy – the studio’s riskiest bet to date – is testing an August release date, leaving the key summer weekends next year to partners at Fox and Sony to release X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, respectively.

This year Feige has gone on record multiple times explaining his desire and the studio’s need to keep crafting movies that offer something different. We saw that in Iron Man 3 and we’re absolutely getting it from the Cap/Thor sequels and GuardiansDoctor Strange opens up the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the mystical and magical side of things which has yet to be explored, but what else remains beyond that we don’t quite know. Another, different Hulk movie? Heroes for Hire? The Inhumans?

What movies would you like to see going forward? Did we mention that Marvel has literally eight years of movies in development?

Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. They need to come out with an Aquaman movie, Hawkman movie, Wonder Woman movie, Flash movie, and Aqua Twins movie all in one year.

    • Wrong thread bro… and that would never happen anyway. DC is only focused on Batman and Superman movies.

And did you mean the “Wonder Twins”? That would most likely be the lamest CB movie ever.

      • Ha, Wonder Twinz, thatz as good an idea as the Smurfz and Monopoly filmz.

    • Umm all of those are Dc nor Marvel so they will never make those. Go leave this comment on a Dc page lol

      • All the way to 2021,that could only be marvel.

    • Umm all of those are Dc not Marvel so they will never make those. Go leave this comment on a Dc page lol

      • Because all these threadz have remained topical?

  2. I hope they have real tough bad guys this Time because it will boring if only had like they had Loki.
    “Learn from man of steal”.

    • They have Malekith as a villain, which should suffice to quench your desire for a real tough bad guy, though Ithink Loki made for a good villain in the first film.

  3. On the TV side of the Marvel Universe, a Daredevil TV show would be awesome. A superhero crime drama.

Cinematic side I would like to see Power Pack. I think this would be a fun movie.

    • WTF are you even talking about?

      • I believe he’s referring to Disney’s over-crowded movie releases and he does have a point. They are going to each profits off of each other because those films are, most of the time, summer blockbusters.

        • Marvel just through the book in DC’s face by giving us this news.

      • @FilthPig

        Theoretically Speaking

Star Wars Episode 8, The Avengers 3, Pirates of the Caribbean part 7 all come out within 4 weeks of each other.

You have to slot time for those movies, and those movies are summer blockbusters. So, you do not want to put them out in February, nor do you want to put them out in September, you want May June or July and if you do that.

You are what they call cannibalizing your movie profits. You have a movies from your own companies now going head to head, not to mention others movies out. YOU DO NOT WANT TO COMPETE AGAINST YOURSELF.

        • No $h!t, I was mostly talking about how unreadable your post was due to your horrible grammar and spelling.

I’m pretty sure Disney knows exactly when to release and space out their movies as to not affect their other properties. When has that been a problem before? And isn’t that kind of a good problem to have?

I for one won’t be seeing PotC in theaters… ever, so that won’t be a problem for me at least. Star Wars and Marvel movies don’t have to worry about profits, believe me. Those movies will both do well as long as they aren’t released in the same weekend or something ridiculous… which they of course won’t be.

So, I really think you’re worried over nothing.

          • I agree completely. Star Wars and Marvel filmz will make money, lotz of it, and Disney is obviously intelligent enough to not overlap their filmz. Two to three Marvel filmz per year is plenty. I’m sure we’d all like more, hell I could watch a new Marvel film every other week, but that just isn’t realistic.
I won’t be watching any Piratez filmz either, after the second I threw in the towel. Disney also has Animated filmz and stand alone projectz to put out as well. They are a powerhouse in the movie industry, and will most likely be the most lucrative film company in modern history.

        • first of all they wouldnt compete against each other but against other studios as those 3 films will be without doubt the biggest of that year…. if you re talking about 2015… its star wars 7,avenger 2,pirates of carribaen 5…. and disney has stated star wars will come in december so they wont compete against each other… and if you do actually mean star was 8,avenger 3 ,pirates of the carribaen 7 .. whos to say they will all come out in the same year??? avenger 3 may come out in 2018 or 2019… pirates of the carribean might take another 4 year gap like ‘on stranger tides’ did to pirates of the carribean 3 .. so could be released 2019.. so very unlikely that all three of the films will be released in the same year … yet alone in the summer as they may keep all the star wars films to december like the hobbit was and lord of the rings …

    • Dude why the hell do you even care? Are you Disney? Your job is to choose whether you want to see the movies, or not.

  4. The more I read about Marvels plans, the more it looks like WB/Dc has no plans. They are definitely looking weak and clueless.

The Superman /Batman movie is good but what else? They should be making at least 2 movies a year. All the characters they have in the DC universe and they are doing nothing with them. Oh well Maybe they will grow a pair after Superman/Batman and get the ball rolling.

    • “Maybe they will grow a pair” haha, very well said. Yeah, DC has great characters but, Batman and MOS aside, I can’t really think of another good DC movie.

      • While perhaps not “core” DC movies, I liked Watchmen, and V for Vendetta is among my favorite movies ever (seen it as least 75 times, including once watching it every day for a month).

    • They never had a plan in the first place. Green Lantern was the risk taker they were betting on but that and Nolan’s trilogy set them back several years. Until Marvel showed up they were content with remaking Batman and Superman constantly so it never occurred to them that a cinematic universe could be successful and reap in even more $$$.

      • DC should release more Vertigo filmz. Sandman, only if done properly, would surely amaze and dazzle audiancez. Books of Magic, Y the Last Man, Ex Machina, Doom Patrol, Transmetropolitan, Invisibles, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Preacher, 100 bullets, Black Orchid, Astro City, Scalped, the Losers, Exterminators, Madame Xanadu, Loveless, Crossing Midnight, Deadman, iZombie, Fables, (Which could be a good Television show) maybe a better League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and a Constantine sequel. Childrenz Crusade could be a great crossover film and I’d love to see a Lucifer flick.

I’m not a big DC fan but have seen the Batman and Superman films and even gave Green Lantern a shot, which I didn’t hate, but didn’t love either. I’m not sure DC has the characterz capable of entertaining.

Speaking of non Marvel Comic Book filmz, I need a new, better Spawn flick and think a Valiant film could be good; Magnus, Turok, Rai, Archer and Armstrong, Shadowman, X-O, etc.

    • wb/dc do have ambition bro, they produced the lord of the rings and the hobbit.. is just they ve had so many flops in the past .. green lantern failed miserablyyyy , they already have to reboot batman cause nolans trilogy is finished and wont be continued.. so thats risky as the last batman film before nolan didnt do any good… and films like wonderwoman and flash seem like harder movies to make than captain america, thor…,iron man

  5. Two I want to see –

    Captain Marvel (Danvers version)

    1) These are amazing characters, and deserve their own films.
    2) A Carol Danvers as Cap Marvel should be sufficient to shame DC into a WW film – proving that a strong female lead in a solo superhero movie is anything but “tricky”
    3) If they are really wanting something different, 4th wall breaking, party-girl/introverted lawyer, SCANTLY CLAD FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, and just fun as hell stories. She-Hulk delivers.

  6. I think Ant-Man could work for his own movie and then Avengers 3 but if they plan to do more with him, turn him into Giant Man because I think he’ll be more respected as a character and make more money that way but start with Ant-Man

  7. TriStar Pictures shall get Spider-Woman, 20th Century Fox shall get The Scarlet Witch from the AVENGERS spin-off. After The Avengers (Part 2) gets made.

  8. I have been pretty negative in my last few post so I will turn it around by saying Marvel should do a Hulk/S.H.I.E.L.D movie where Leader escapes S.H.I.E.L.D’S prison and finds a way to control Hulk but not Banner We could see Hulk being unleashed on S.H.I.I.L.D like the best scenes in The Avengers where Hulk is chasing Black Widow. Hulk could calm down and Banner finds a way to out smart Leader completely flipping how the Hulk movies always end in a huge Monster vs Monster movie. We could see a great battle in the middle of the film where hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D are just going at it and Nick Fury could be calling in everyone to help. I would also love a scene where HULK is behind Abomination Being held back mentally by Leader while Abomination tells the good guys what’s about to go down. I think this is the best way to make a Hulk sequel because using the Hulk like that was awesome in the avengers and I want more. Also been waiting for the Leader since Incredible Hulk ended.

  9. sorry about my grammar, lol. I did not even read it back to myself before posting, now its a mess but you guys and gals get the point.

    • I like the idea of a Banner/ leader brain off, but the rest sounds a little World War Hulk, which they may be building up to anyway. Lets face it Civil War is never gunna happen, not unless the studios learn how to play nice.
I know he’s not everyone’s cup of cha, but I’d like to see Red Hulk. I’d love to see Captain Britain given a shot as well, but realise he may not be suited to the big screen. Perhaps Union Jack would play better, after all he did kind of turn up in Captain America. Also another juggernaut, Vinnie Jones in a rubber suit? How we all cringed.

      • I think they could pull off Civial War without the X-squadz, Spidey, and FF, and Captain Britain and MI-6 could work, it would be a good Fantasy film if they introduce Otherworld and populate it with Merlin, faeriez, etc. I’d love to see Mad Jim Jasperz and Psylocke…

  10. They need to make a movie about deadpool he is the funiest and most interesting marvel hero

    • I’m hoping he shows up again (or for the first time properly) in X-Force.

      • I can only imagine this will occur at some point in the next few yearz, may even be part of the X-force team in that film. The difficulty comez from the rating, Deadpool deserves an R, as does Punisher and even Wolverine. PG-13 just doesn’t cut it.

  11. Is the Deadpool movie going to get filmed

  12. black panther be in theaters on friday may 5 2017

    • Where’d you get that info from?

      • his arse. Pulled it right out.

  13. need for speed 2 be in theaters on friday march 3 2017

  14. man they need to releaseee black panther, doctor strange and new hulk movie with ruffalo! i mean feig keeps talking about potentially releasing them so they better be in the 2016,2017 slot.. afterall it be cool to increase the number of avengers in avenger 3 or even change it up a bit, especially if we got thanos for the 3rd one

  15. THE movie to make is based on Ultimatum: let’s say in approx. 10 years, when everything is said and done, studios should find a way to use every characters still alive and do an über-crossover like in the Ultimate Universe. I think they even could go on establishing new characters after that!

    • Marvel is baiting DC and it’s working.

  16. Captain britain could be a popular chaacter if he makes a big screen appearance in a live action movie.

  17. A Prince Namor/Sub-Mariner movie needs to be in the works. It has the potential to be the best Marvel movie of all time if it is done right. I think “the Rock” has the perfect look/personality to be able to pull it off. Namor is one of the original Marvel super-heroes but I don’t hear his name ever mentioned in any of the future plans for upcoming projects. I did hear some talk a few years ago but the idea seemed to fizzle………very dissappointed

  18. I think black panthers got to come into it, he’s the coolest looking character and his home land wakanda has already been mentioned (they harvest the material that made captain Americas shield). Plus the best duo Power man and Iron fist, hero’s for hire is a good path for marvel to take, they could ‘re-release deadpool in it… But dont sew his mouth up.. that was gay.

  19. Vin diesel as vision lol do it!

    • vin diesel, the vision, hhhhhhhuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh????????????

      • vin diesel as taskmaster, that’s illogical.

  20. Planet Hulk

    ’nuff said.

  21. Marvel should make a straight to DVD animated version of Wolverine: Enemy of the State. In the style of JRJR.

  22. They should put the punisher and Spider-Man in a movie together

  23. Isn’t it time to start referencing the Fantastic Four & Xmen in the Avengers pics?
Hey, how about a mix and mash? Just sayin…

  24. I think Marvel needs to develop a film group for smaller films for more complex story lines that are character driven stories that broaden and deepen the fan base. The Marvel Universe has an unmatched wealth of material to develop female characters, LGBT characters and plot lines, alien/human relationships, grand and small conspiracies, comedy and tragedy…. One line that I’d be particularly interested in is a re-boot of Truth: Red, White, and Black in a story line connecting Isiah Bradley to the Black Panther, Nick Fury, Luke Cage and the ancient Kree/Skrull War. The story could be written by Walter Mosely and the graphic novel could help in the marketing effort. Outstanding!

  25. I want to see the whole Magik Arc. From Iliyana being abducted as a child to her growing up in Limbo and becoming Sorcerous supreme of Limbo. If Dr. Strange is a hit I’m sure Magik would be too.

Tie it in with a New Mutants/Xforce movie and it would be perfect.
