marvel movie updates kevin feige What Films Are Coming From Marvel Studios in 2014? [Updated]

Marvel Studios has had a tough time keeping to their plan of two theatrical releases per year. Delays with Thor and The Avengers had Iron Man 2 release by itself in 2010 and next year, The Avengers is without a partner since Runaways was indefinitely postponed. For 2013 and 2014 however, it’s back to two films/year or… more.

Today, the news came from Disney that Marvel would be releasing The Avengers in 3D (post-converted), but that unsurprising news was padded with something far more interesting: Marvel Studios claiming another release date in 2014 to release one of their films earlier.

Up until now, the official slate of upcoming films from Marvel Studios was scheduled as follows:

[Updates: Thor 2 moved again and Guardians of the Galaxy is coming in August 2014]

  • The Avengers (May 4)
  • Runaways (canned)

  • Iron Man 3 (May 3)
  • Thor 2 (July 26 pushed back to November 15 8th)

[Update: Marvel has nothing currently scheduled in their original May 16 and June 27 dates]

As of today, the 2014 schedule changes and the June 27 project will now be releasing on April 4th, nearly three months earlier. No information has been given on the 2014 releases but we do know The Avengers will get a sequel eventually and that there’s talk of a follow-up for Captain America’s solo outing as well. Reports from two months ago also indicated that Marvel Studios would be working on Ant-ManGuardians of the Galaxy and The Inhumans after Iron Man 3 and Thor 2.

So, will these 2014 movies simply be sequels to what we already know? Is Edgar Wright’s latest Ant-Man script finally going to be pushed into production? Is Marvel preparing to finally introduce some other characters in solo films? Or, as reported frequently in recent months, is the studio going to take the risk by bringing fans deeper into the Marvel cosmic universe post-Avengers? Let’s examine what we know.

Two years might be pushing it for The Avengers 2 so it’s more likely that’ll be a 2015 release, depending on the success of its predecessor at the box office next summer. That would open up the 2014 dates to be used for films launching from characters and storylines introduced in The Avengers. Chris Evans went on record stating that the next time we’d see him suit up as the star-spangled Avenger would be in 2014 at the earliest. Ant-Man has been in development for a very long time and writer/director Edgar Wright told us at Comic-Con this summer that his latest script was being submitted days later and that they already have concept art.

Looking at the revised dates, there are two possibilities.

  1. Marvel will add a third release date, either in the summer (maybe making use of that June 27 date) or in the fall, something they’re testing in 2013 with Thor 2. This would allow them to play with interconnected films and/or do more to setup for The Avengers 2 the following year.
  2. Dropping a summer date for a spring date means one of two things. This mystery project is not a big-budget tentpole or it directly ties into whatever the second movie is in May and needs to come before it. The May date is the most important and has to stay there.

The April release is very likely Ant-Man finally getting his post-Avengers introduction in time for The Avengers 2 or it could be Runaways, the lower-budget film Peter Sollett was going to direct off of Drew Pearce’s script, a script that Marvel apparently really likes, and one that Pearce says could still be adapted after The Avengers. As for the May date, that’s going to be a major project. Expect a Captain America sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Inhumans are actively in development and are possibilities as well, but Marvel will not talk about those until we’ve very close to The Avengers (or afterwards) to avoid fans digging into how those play off and tie-in to what happens in The Avengers. Marvel knows what these films are so there’s very deliberate reasons for not announcing them – it’s because they’re launching off of The Avengers.

Other, not very likely projects, include Black PantherDr. Stange, Heroes for Hire and a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.

What would you like to see Marvel Studios do in 2014? Ant-Man and Captain America or a few cosmic movies?

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon, opening in theaters on May 4, 2012.

  1. I hope that Marvel uses the Reggie Hudlin/John Romita Jr. storyline for the first Black Panther movie. It’s the most cohesive and commercial BP arc that would translate on the big screen. It has both T’Challa’s origin, his motivation to avenge his father’s assassination, a great villain in Klaw, and an action packed third act with the siege upon Wakanda.

If you’ve never read “Who Is The Black Panther?”, I would strongly suggest you do. It’s the closest thing to a Marvel Comics adaptation of a film since Archie Goodwin/Al Williamson’s “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return Of The Jedi.”

    • I loved the Black Panther series when I was growing up. Can’t wait to see the movie!

    • patience, there will be a black panther movie.

  2. still hve to see the Avengers just saw Green Latern last night, hve to see the other super hero movies first then the Avengers

    • You MUST see “The Avengers”. Hulk will SMASH you if you don’t. :) You wouldn’t like that. 😀

    • the runaways better feature ricochet and company, good idea.

  3. Personally, I am still wanting/hoping for a launch vehicle for..The She-Hulk..at some point. As Agent Smith would say..”It’s Inevitable”. At least I feel that it is. :)

Of course, THAT would logically have to happen within a Hulk film. Can’t have The She-Hulk without The Hulk, right? :)

Come on Marvel, get Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk on the big screen or Hulk will smash YOU!

  4. The Amazing Spider-Man?

    • spider-man 2099 movie, it’s a really good idea. but first a movie about spider-man Miles Morales.

  5. Loved the avengers, iron man 1 & 2 and thor, look forward to thor 2 cap 2 and iron man 3, hope modok the skrulls and ultron make an appearance.

  6. Loved the avengers, iron man 1 & 2 and thor, look forward to thor 2 cap 2 and iron man 3, hope modok the skrulls and ultron appear in a next marvel project.

  7. When do you thinkthat it would be possible for a sequal to the amazing spiderman?

  8. I reckon they should bring some female heroes in the mix…Ms Marvel should (in my opinion) have a cameo role in one of the upcoming marvel film…she’d fit in just great especially now the lead up to Avengers 2
has gone all cosmic…and lets face it they need some more superheroines to even it out…marvel please let it happen : )

  9. I just really, really, really want a Runaways movie. WHY DO YOU KEEP TORMENTING US, MARVEL? ;__;

    • Look out for a Runaways movie in hopefully 2014 (of 2015, if we must wait until after the Avengers 2)

  10. I hope if they make a ghostrider 3 they use the chareter vengance from the spirt of vengance books back in the 1990s it was cool to see two ghost riders battleing it out. If done right this could be awsome.

    • Idk if you noticed but the entire second Ghost Rider movie was a setup for the very story you want to see… Not sure they mentioned the kids last name in the movie but he has the demonic powers already and is named “Danny”. Danny Ketch was the 2nd Ghost Rider if i recall the 90s correctly. Either its a setup for the Vengeance story line or a setup for Nick Cages exit from the series. Either would be a huge improvement and boost for the franchise.

  11. Black panther

  12. Black panthermovie

  13. Wikipedia said Runaways might me released in 2014, but I’m not sure

  14. I would like to see the other movies that lead up to the second Avengers first, but 2015?! Seriously? Why not December 2014? Why, of all possibilities, 2015?!
I also hope that they don’t kill off Captain America. I mean, from a writer’s perspective, they won’t, but from a general perspective…..the guy’s a goner.

  15. I’d like to see a Luke Cage and Iron-Fist movie. Also Iceman could be focused on with Angel for the original X-Men.

  16. I think they need to do spiderman flash and greenlantern batman and supperman alltogether

  17. All i want to see is a Silver Surfer movie… Anything else only interests me so much. And please please please bring Rachel Grey-Summers into the rebooted X-men franchise along with a better version of Kittty Pryde (sorry Ellen Paige). Icing on the cake would be if they could work Psylocke into the cinematic universe somehow too… seeing as “days of future past” will be the story used for the sequel to First Class, my Rachel Summers wish may come true. Or they may butcher the story like they did in 1992 with the cartoon version. Lets hope not. Its one of the best, if not the best, classic X men story ever penned.

  18. How about a Moon Knight movie?!

  19. Id like marvel to do the whole hog go nuts for it all of us comic book freaks who’ve been reading all this as kids now get the chance to kick back and watch it all come to life in hd with breathtaking special effects. Id rather see them go all out with things like the avengers and all the other solo movies that tie in with it. I wanna also see the cosmic movies also but would rather see all the others come out first as they were always my favourites growing up. But that’s my opinion. All of this is amazing and im loving it.

  20. can wait to watch the guardians of the galaxy

  21. During the 60’s there was a comic about a teenager who fell into an underground cave and found an alien rotary device that when dialed, turned him into a different superhero every time he dialed it. It was called “Dial H For Hero. It was one of my favorites even though it was a limited run. I think this would make a pretty cool movie.

  22. I’d like to see, a Spawn reboot. I think it has a big character following in the Marvel universe franchise that has Marvel missing out on a good opportunity. I’d love to see Spawn rebooted personally.

  23. I am very concerned that the producer uses the original Guardians of the Galaxy, and not the new series.
I think it’s great they’re doing GofG and Inhumans, now they just need to add 2 more: nova and omega the unknown.

  24. The Fantastic 4 enter the Inhumans was one of the best fantastic 4 adventures and foes ever.Would make a great movie.Spider man versus Kraven the hunter and the vulture would also make a great Spidey adventure.Thor versus Hurcules would alsomake a good movie.

  25. I think they should do Ant Man because they never showed a movie with ant man in it

  26. I really want a Daredevil 2 or a reboot. And I really really want a Dr. Strange. The Submariner would also be nice. My opinion – too much Wolverine. What’s up with that? Some kind of love affair with Hugh Jackman.

  27. I would love to see an Iron Fist movie. It wouldn’t have to be a big budget film.
