Back in 2013, Marvel and Netflix struck a deal to bring more content set in the MCU to the streaming service. Although the initial plan was to have Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist each have one solo season before joining forces for a mini-series of The Defenders, those plans have changed quite a bit. Since then, Daredevil has had two seasons and a third announced, with a second season of Jessica Jones also being ordered. Not only are they renewing the original series, they have already greenlit a spinoff series for Jon Bernthal to star in The Punisher.
The news of a spinoff was not entirely surprising given the Punisher’s breakout role in season 2 of Daredevil, but it has remained unclear when exactly we will see it. Speculation has risen that a 2017 release could be in store, and that might be more believable if they are already casting as the latest report suggests.
MCUExchange is reporting that Marvel and Netflix are currently casting for the character of David Lieberman, also known as Microchip/Micro. While it is unclear what stage in pre-production The Punisher is in, if they are casting for the series then it could be farther along than initially believed. The series already has a showrunner attached in Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal). MCUExchange addition revealed the script used in the audition process for Micro.
The script is not too revealing on what Micro’s involvement with the series will be. In some capacity, his expertise with technology and hacking would seemingly come into play. Micro being a part of the cast of The Punisher is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. The characters have interacted many times over the years in the comics, and he would present Frank with an ally for whatever mission he will go on.
At this time, not much is known about the potential plot of the series, and it could largely depend on if he appears again prior to the series being released. Punisher appearing in The Defenders is something that could easily happen, given the friendlier nature that he and Daredevil had at the end of season 2. As for Micro’s involvement moving forward, it is only a rumor at this point and although it is likely that this comes to be true, it also remains possible that they decide not to use this character after all.
Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
