Frank Castle is back. The first full trailer for The Punisher has debuted, giving us an extended look at what to expect from the vigilante's reign of bloody vengeance. After three live-action movies that failed to get the attention the brutal vigilante deserved, he's found his home on Netflix amongst Daredevil and the rest of The Defenders. The Punisher was given his own solo series after he made his appearance in Daredevil season 2. Jon Bernthal clearly made his mark on fans and studio executives alike with his performance, and Netflix have slowly been building up the anticipation for The Punisher ever since.The trailer is the latest in a long line of promotional teases before the series' release. We've seen posters revealing Castle's allies and enemies, clips of him hunting down his victims, and a synopsis that gave us a taste of what to expect from the series. The Punisher will be uncovering an entirely new conspiracy that stretches further than just the criminals in New York. In fact, it will stretch all the way back into his military career and old allies that he's worked with.The new trailer gives us our first proper look at what The Punisher solo series will look like, and some of the new characters that will be appearing (as well as some familiar faces). And although the trailer is careful not to reveal the meat of the plot, it does reveal how the different pieces of the series will move together as Frank investigates this new conspiracy. There's plenty that we haven't seen yet, but we've broken down the key parts of the trailer.

Family

The beginning of the trailer shows Frank and his family before they were murdered. We see him teaching his daughter to play guitar, alongside memories of his son and wife on the merry-go-round. These shots are tragically contrasted against Frank alone by himself. It then shows us the middle of a dream about his wife when they're alone - that is, until a masked soldier enters the room and executes her. This dream combines the death of his family, with the military background that Frank has alongside the things he's seen and done in his career. Since the mystery surrounding their deaths were wrapped up towards the end of Daredevil season 2, it's time for Frank to move on. Although that doesn't mean they're not still driving him forward in his mission against crime. We'll definitely be exploring more of Frank Castle's personality and human side.

Micro

Frank won't be alone in his crusade against this new conspiracy; he'll be joined by Micro (Eben Moss-Bachrach) a character from the comics. His new ally mainly runs the technical support side of the Punisher's missions, and in their brief interaction in the trailer, it seems like Micro is the one to suggest working as a team to take down their enemies: "You and me, we want the same thing. So work with me." We recently found out that the show will include The Punisher's Battle Van, it's likely that Micro will be the one to help give him those upgrades. We also find out that he has no trouble with Frank Castle killing everyone they're going up against.

Military Memories

The main conspiracy driving The Punisher to bring his brutal tactics will reach all the way back to Frank's military career and those he used to work with. It seems like his family will still play a small role in this mystery, as Frank questions one soldier before quickly executing him. We also hear Frank tell us that he was part of a covert CIA operation and that the man in charge wants him dead. This man is a character from the comics called Rawlins, played by Paul Schulze. A video clip titled 'Zubair Interrogation' shows Rawlins torturing someone, presumably 'Zubair'. We later find out that Homeland Security and the FBI are also part of this larger plot - all gunning for Frank.

Jigsaw

Although Rawlins will be the man pulling the strings, Frank will be going up against his former friend, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes). We see him briefly in the trailer, walking away from an explosion in full villain mode, but comic fans will already be familiar with the 2D version of Billy Russo. The villain is also known by the name Jigsaw - a nickname he earns after the Punisher throws him through a pane of glass, cutting his face to shreds. This is the first time we've seen Barnes in the role, but not the first time we've seen the character in live-action, as Jigsaw was also the main villain in 2008's Punisher: War Zone.

Karen Page

Karen Page really doesn't have the best of luck when it comes to vigilantes and conspiracies, does she? She formed an attachment to the Castle case during Daredevil season 2, and now she's returning to help the Punisher in his own series. Moreover, since Karen is now an investigative reporter for The New York Bulletin, she'll probably be interested in investigating the military plot that Frank is wrapped up in. Karen is not in the trailer for long, but we do see her ducking out the way of an explosion. We've previously seen photos of Deborah Ann Woll and Jon Bernthal when filming, with Bernthal sporting long hair and a beard at the time, so they'll probably meet when Castle is still in hiding or undercover.

Bring the pain

He wouldn't be the Punisher if he didn't spill a little blood. Marvel's Netflix shows are notable within the Marvel Cinematic Universe for their graphic violence, and the Punisher will follow in the same violent footsteps as the rest of New York's street-level heroes - perhaps even more so. We see him taking out numerous soldiers and enemies with head shots, body shots, pistols, shotguns and light machine guns - and an extra point for the way the multiple gun shots match up against Metallica's song, "One," they work perfectly together.

Missing, Presumed Dead

Towards the end of the trailer, we see a pair of Homeland Security agents questioning whether Frank Castle was really dead or not. Detective Sergeant Brett Mahoney, who has previously appeared in both Daredevil and Jessica Jones, asks the two of them whether "this look[s] like the work of a dead man?" - since Frank is, as far as most people know, dead at the end of Daredevil season 2. Although there won't be many references to other Netflix shows, another recurring character will be making an appearance: Turk, a criminal who's previously appeared in Daredevil and Luke Cage, will fall victim to Frank's interrogation techniques, as a recent photo revealed. And since The Punisher is sporting his beard in the image, we can assume this will be when everyone thinks he's still dead. Obviously, this is good for Frank - this means he can operate a lot more freely if everyone thinks that he's dead - but he probably won't be able to stay off the radar for long.

Still No Release Date

Unfortunately, the trailer avoids revealing the final release date for The Punisher, instead simply flickering with a series of numbers and blocking out portions of the date. It's definitely coming this year - we just don't know when. Fans have previously speculated that the series will debut the Friday 10, just before Veteran's Day, which would honor Frank's career in the Marine Corps.

We probably won't ever see the Punisher make an appearance in the movie side of the MCU, but after three Punisher movies it will be interesting to see if a TV series offers the best adaptation of the comics yet. It won't be long until the series is released, but unfortunately Marvel and Netflix are staying quiet for now about when Frank Castle will blast his way to our screens. One Batch. Two Batch.
