Marvel's The Punisher has finished filming its first season, ahead of the show's premiere on Netflix later this year. Netflix's journey through the mean streets of NYC in the Marvel Cinematic Universe began in spring 2015 with Daredevil season 1, which made a huge splash, earning critical raves and fan adulation. That same year's Jessica Jones season 1 did similarly, with some proclaiming it to be even better than the debut of Matt Murdock.

2016 saw even more positive sentiment for the Netflix corner of the MCU, with Daredevil season 2 garnering largely positive reviews, if not quite to the nearly universal degree earned by season 1. Last fall's Luke Cage season 1 proved to be another hit, setting itself apart from the other Defenders-verse efforts in many ways, and establishing the future Hero for Hire as a character perfectly capable of carrying his own series.

Unfortunately, the seemingly never-ending praise directed toward Netflix's Marvel series came to a halt with the recent release of Iron Fist season 1, the first entry in the Defenders-verse to earn far more detractors than it has proponents. Of course, just because 2017 has started weakly for the Marvel/Netflix partnership, doesn't mean it has to end that way. The team-up miniseries event The Defenders arrives in August, with The Punisher also scheduled for 2017. While the launch of Frank Castle's solo series still has yet to be dated, photos have emerged from the wrap party for filming on The Punisher season 1, as can be seen below:

While Daredevil season 2 played host to a few elements that ultimately proved a bit divisive among fans, one aspect that drew nearly unanimous acclaim was actor Jon Bernthal's portrayal of The Punisher, a.k.a. grieving dad and badass military veteran Frank Castle. Bernthal is now the fourth actor to play the character in a live-action setting, the others being Dolph Lundgren in 1989, Thomas Jane in 2004, and Ray Stevenson in 2008. While each of those prior takes has some fans, to call Bernthal's Castle the best received Punisher yet would be am understatement.

As is usual for Marvel projects this far out from release though, little is known about what The Punisher season 1 will actually be about - although Frank's one-man crusade against crime will obviously continue to be the main focus. One villain who won't be making an appearance is Wilson "The Kingpin" Fisk, as actor Vincent D'Onofrio confirmed that there were no plans to include him in season 1 a few months back. With filming completed, here's hoping more details are revealed soon.
