Captain Marvel Art Natalie Portman Hints at Female Marvel Superhero Movie in the Works

We have echoed the thoughts of many other comic book fans, when it comes to our stance towards the issue of diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; in short, the MCU needs more of it. The upcoming installments in Phase 2 will make progress on that front by introducing characters like Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and then Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but as right now there’s been no official confirmation that a Marvel superhero movie featuring a non-white and/or non-male protagonist will be made in the near future.

However, there has been the off-hand statement made by Marvel executives here and there in recent months, suggesting that the studio is taking steps to change that. First, Marvel Studios producer Louis D’Esposito acknowledged that there’s “a drumbeat that is getting louder and louder” for a female superhero mainstay in the MCU. And now, it appears that Marvel could be developing a TV series based around Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell in the Captain America movies) – one that builds on the foundation laid by Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (assuming the latter is a success when it premieres on ABC next week).

Kat Dennings and Natalie Portman in Thor Natalie Portman Hints at Female Marvel Superhero Movie in the Works

We can add Natalie Portman – who reprises as astrophysicist Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World this fall – to the list of Marvel folk who’ve hinted that a female superhero move is in the works. Here is what the Oscar-winning actress said, during her interview with SciFiNow:

“There are definitely many strong women [in the MCU], but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming – and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters.”

Comic book legend and Marvel executive producer Stan Lee has continually name-dropped Black Panther as a comic book character who is going to get their own solo vehicle in the foreseeable future, but as of right now there doesn’t seem to be much (if any) room for the Prince of Wakanda to be included in Phase 3 of the MCU (given the momentum that properties like Inhumans and Doctor Strange have on their sides, anyway). That’s not to say a Marvel Studio release featuring a central non-white lead isn’t part of the studio’s plan leading up to Avengers 4 in 2021, but (as Portman implies) there seems to be a more likely chance that a female superhero standalone vehicle will hit the big screen first.

avengers age ultron black widow Natalie Portman Hints at Female Marvel Superhero Movie in the Works

There’s been talk over the years about Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow getting her own solo vehicle, but that seems unlikely to happen. In part, that’s because it would appear that Natasha Romanoff is going to be (essentially) a central player alongside Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in the Captain America sequel – leading up to her playing an important role in Avengers: Age of Ultron thereafter.

Beyond that, the most obvious choice for a female Marvel superhero flick is Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel, with regard to the list of female comic book characters that Marvel Studios can actually include in the MCU (due to Fox and Sony owning the rights to many of the popular female Marvel superheroes). Fan-favorite Katee Sackhoff (Riddick) has expressed her interest in playing a couple of different comic book characters – including Typhoid Mary from Daredevil (the movie rights for which now belong to Marvel Studios) – and recently let it be known that Marvel has expressed an interest in collaborating with her… but almost certainly not on a new Daredevil movie, to prevent any confusion.

Would Katee Sackhoff be a good choice to play Ms./Captain Marvel in the MCU, or should the actress be cast as someone else? Better yet, forget which female characters are more likely to get their own standalone vehicle – who do you want to see featured as the lead in an upcoming Marvel female superhero film (be it a Phase 3 or Phase 4 installment)?

  1. first of all lets go through the ongoing this is not always about marvel its about getting successful dc characters as we got my problem with dc is they never got their heroes right (except batman which is because that tim burtonn and nolan understood the characer even though burtons version lacked in many ways it’s better than joel schumacher ) but now man of steel has started something which i loved but haven’t convinced the seventies and eighties guys who is still in love reeve or donner versions and without 2nd one 1st is not that good so its up to snyder and goyer to come up with an awesome super hero movie that could really stand up to the standards of avengers look many of you might start a war with this please don’t avengers is something that totaly came out as a surprise which nobody expected to be this engaging i used to watch it daily in my dvd they should try to give some more engaging and mind blowing that doesn’t mean you can’t add comedy into it the nolan version proves my point

  2. regardless, marvel will release a captain marvel film detailing kree and cosmic mythology, while WB will continue chasing it’s tail with the supposed wonder woman dilemma.

  3. Maybe, just maybe, DC/WB wants someone else to try the female lead superhero film. Joel Silver tried to put one together for over a decade and failed for several reasons just in the planning phase. WHY? Lynda Carter is till alive in America’s mind. WB would be smart to wait for Marvel to either F’up or succeed in a female-lead superhero film. Besides, think of the big names. DC has Wonder Woman and… Hawk Girl? Supergirl? Star Sapphire? Female Green Lanterns? I mean they have one BIG shot that if they take it, and fail, it will poison the character for 10+ years. At least the male GL has 3 iterations in the comics.

Now Marvel? Ms. Marvel (stop saying Captain or else DC will have a legal claim), Black Widow, Wasp, and other less-central characters that they can implement, screw up, and try on another. So yes, DC, wait and allow Marvel to pull a pixar and begin screwing up eventually.

    • You really think DC will sue Marvel for using the Marvel name? DC renamed their Captain Marvel ‘Shazam’ after the New 52 reboot. There were still some stubborn people calling him Shazam beforehand. The rights to the ‘Captain Marvel’ name/title are with Marvel, which makes sense when you think about it. Because it’s Marvel.

If a CAPTAIN Marvel film is made, the character will probably be called Captain Marvel because that’s her name in the comic books at the moment and the films have something of a ‘gateway’ effect to the comic books. I’m not saying that 70% of people that see a comic book movie then go out and buy up the last fifty years’ worth of issues, but it does increase interest in the comics.

    • There’s also Powergirl, Huntress, Black Canary, and Catwoman, but how did that work out for her? I think the real reason Joel Silver failed to make one is that he never really had an idea for what it should be, he eventually turned down all the scripts that had Wonder Woman in WWII and then all the ones that had Dr. Psycho as the villain while in the animated department they made an animated one just like that.

      • Huntress is locked up with Arrow right now and the TV show tanked. If WW can’t be taken seriously for her costume, how does anyone thing Powergirl will? Just look at YaYa Han’s cosplay of the character…

I could see Black Canary if Laurel in Arrow doesn’t turn out to be that character. That leaves Catwoman who just came off from Anne Hathaway’s portrayal.

Supergirl and WW are the top 2 possibilities since Helen Slater’s portrayal just begs for a reboot and WW is very well-known. I feel you on Joel’s “scripts”. Maybe with the new head of WBPics in place they’ll see a new light on those scripts. WW in WWII era would be good to get the Cap America audience, but that’s why they need her origin movie, then a JL movie. Doesn’t that make sense?

And Shazam was called Captain Marvel in a recent DCU title (not the Black Adam one, I think it was Flashpoint), so DC hasn’t fully gotten rid of it. I did hear the Cap Marvel name in one of the animated Avenger’s shows and nothing happened. So who knows…

        • Captain Marvels name was switched AFTER that event.

    • natalie portman wants to be ms.marvel, that’s why the image above looks so much like her.simple truth.

      • The image above has nothing to do with Natalie Portman. It was done by someone a long time ago on Deviant Art.

        • my mistake then.

    • uhm the Trend after 2006 like a DahLen uhmm boy’s’

      *Rise threw your Distance*

    • cjplay, I just wanted to clarify for you: DC has NEVER held the trademark on the Captain Marvel name. They left the character in limbo after they won their suit against Fawcett and Marvel, during that time, so their competition wouldn’t have a character name trademarked that was so synonymous with their company, swooped in and claimed the name for themselves.

DC can use the name but can’t receive licensing fees from it’s use, that’s why Billy Batson’s alter ego is ALWAYS referred to as ‘Shazam!’ when being plugged on the cover of his own comics or when making guest appearances, but can still be called ‘Captain Marvel’ otherwise. It’s also why Marvel keeps the name “Captain Marvel” in circulation- there have been no less than a dozen incarnations of the character over those 40+ years in at least 4-5 different comics of that title.

Personally, I like Carol Danvers as the new CAPTAIN Marvel, and would be happy to see her featured in her own movie.

    • Rogue should get a legit orgin story (not the hacked up one the 2000 film had) They could involve mystique and bring in destiny as the mutants who raised her to be a villian in mystiques new brotherhood of evil mutants…leading up to the attack on Ms. Marvel and the absorption of her powers giving rogue her super strength and flight. Mystique could be a main villain for her given the complexity of their relationship and or Ms marvel could come back for revenge ala avengers vs xmen….idk i just love rogue and feel she deserves the respect of being portrayed properly on the big screen btw make mine marvel

  4. Wasp or Ms. Marvel and Black Panther or Power Man.

    • dwayne johnson prediction: luke cage, Black adam,Namor the sub-mariner.

      • I was like uhmm Speilberg boy’s’ 2 3 hundred million on a what if . . . “well you know he’s 3 billion and always Broom Stick DA UNCLE’S with Grandma”

  5. My top choices, at least to start with, would be Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Black Widow is already an established and popular hero in the MCU. She has an interesting background that could make for a good movie, and from a budget perspective, it wouldn’t be all that expensive. Carol Danvers is also a great character and could fit into the cosmic side of Marvel that they seem to be building. The Agent Carter TV show is also a good idea.

    • If Marvel goes with a horror/slasher/action movie or spy drama then a female lead would work well. However, i’m not sure if Ms.Marvel is suited for a horror/slasher/action film based on her powers (fight, super strength, etc.), nor am I confident that her powers are suited for a 100 minute spy drama, she is more of a beat em’ up muscle team up character. Black Widow would work better with either a male love interest, and she does not need an origin story. Black Widow is mission ready.

      • You raise a good point on a Captain/Ms Marvel film being a more ‘classic’ superhero film. TV Tropes refers to characters like her as ‘Flying Bricks’ – they have the powers of flight, super strength, high tolerance to damage and usually another ‘special’ power.

With Marvel trying to be more clever/different with their films – The Dark World is being set up as a Lord of the Rings/fantasy film, The Winter Soldier is meant to feel like a spy/thriller movie, Guardians is sci-fi – I’m not sure she fits as a solo act.

People have already spoken about Ant-Man having spy/espionage overtones and something tells me Doctor Strange will be something entirely different. Marvel making superhero films that stretch the label of ‘superhero films’ is what I think will keep them going.

        • So, the only movies that are suited to female leads are horror/slasher films, sorry not buying it. Superman is a flying brick, and they’ve made successful films about him. Also, Carol fits the cosmic stuff that Marvel is currently pushing. Also, BW doesn’t need a love interest to make a successful movie. That’s just disrespectful to her character, she’s interesting enough on her own.

          • I’m not saying that female superhero films won’t work, but I was wondering what Marvel would do with a ‘flying brick’ that would be different. They’ve got upcoming films with a spy/espionage slant, a fantasy edge, a heavy sci-fi leaning and so on. If they just keep putting out samey ‘hero gets into a fight with a baddie in the city and wins’ films, they’ll get old fast.

With properties like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, they seem to be taking a different approach to superhero films to keep them feeling ‘fresh.’ Danvers would be franchise gold if she got a good film considering her being a sort-of urban-based Thor with a link to the sci-fi stuff from Avengers and Guardians. Marvel haven’t done that ‘classic’ flying brick film, they haven’t done ‘ordinary person gets extraordinary powers,’ but these are the most common tropes of superhero films.

I agree that Black Widow wouldn’t need a love interest, but would she need her own film? She’s co-starring in The Winter Soldier and seems to be doing the same job as Captain America, so her films might be a bit samey.

            • Marvel would NEVER make an horror/slasher movie because: a) it makes very little sense in the context of superheroes (I can see Doctor Strange as an incredibly weird movie that touches horror themes à la Lovecraft, i.e. eldritch horror from another dimension, but that’s it) b) they are movies marketed for families, little kids see them. Worse you can show in a movie like that is the Kraken from Pirates of the Carribean, certainly not a scene straight from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Noticed how in Avengers the ONLY scene about death (which with a full-scale invasion in New York is bound to happen) was at the end with the people lighting the candles for the victims? Not a single drop of blood or a body. c) Carol Danvers or Natasha Romanov can kick enough butt to keep us entertained for two hours with the usual superhero formula, trust me.

    • possible choices that have been talked about fro the role of Ms. Marvel:

      -maylin ackerman

      -kelly carlson

      -sarah chalke

      -kristin davis

      -sarah jessica parker

      -jennifer love hewitt

      -katee sackhoff

    • someone said they wanted January jones to play ms.marvel

  6. I think it makes more sense to consider Firestar (Angelica Jones) as the first Marvel super heroine to be the subject of a standalone movie. She is a lesser-known character in Marvel Comics’ history, making the launch of a possible new series of films a fresh one, separating it from The Avengers, Thor, and Captain America, so that they don’t suffer the fate of being unnecessarily compared to these movie franchises.

  7. what she really meant to say is that she wants to play ms. marvel.

  8. I would stil be interested in seeing a black widow movie as well as a hawkeye movie since they both have very unique and interesting origin stories or maybe they can combine them and make a movie featuring red guardian and taskmaster.Either way marvel should try to work with this and see if it gives good results.

  9. I would love to see a Black Widow movie, she’s so badass and I’m in love with scar’jo. But seeing as she’s going to be in the avengers and cap americas’ right now, i think it would be hard to do. they need someone to introduce with a standalone series and be put in the avengers, like they did with the others, i think ms. marvel or valkyrie would be amazing!

  10. A Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel movie is great! I like Wonder Woman but I don’t see the need to harass Marvel for something DC/WB has continually delayed for a VERY LONG TIME. Right now, I just want to see a female superhero stand-alone movie and Marvel is going to do it. I say that’s a great move, unless they screw it up, in which case, I’ll probably be disappointed. Though I don’t see anything going wrong with a Ms. M/Cap. M movie in the first place, just a high expectations.

  11. I say it why not expand of Storm or Black panther somehow… Maybe they have a daughter or something, storm is a very powerful female character… And never has her true power been displayed I think it would be a huge success, especially if they get Halle Berry to play the role( even though she is not African as Storm truly was) everyone loves her. It would also kill two birds with one stone… The race and sex barrier… I honestly thought they would have expanded all of the x-men when they did the first movie for wolverine. It would be nice to see a strong black woman as the hero… Who isn’t the damsel in distress!!!
