With the exception of Thor, Marvel in-house productions have dealt with comic book characters rooted in the sci-fi, not fantasy, genre. However, now that the studio is reportedly moving ahead with a Dr. Strange movie, it is going to become near impossible to avoid introducing overt supernatural elements into the Marvel movie universe.

The magically-empowered Stephen Strange is not one of the more mainstream characters in the Marvel catalogue. Even so, it now appears that he could be one of the first non-Avengers characters to make the jump to the big screen.

Screenwriting duo Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (the upcoming Conan the Barbarian rebooot) were reportedly hired last year to draft a script for the Dr. Strange movie. The project will be live-action and not a computer-animated film by Pixar, as was previously rumored.

According to Twitch, Donnelly and Oppenheimer have turned in their Dr. Strange script and Marvel is forwarding their draft to an undisclosed shortlist of directors “to try and sign someone up to ‘oversee continued development’” of the project.

Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 have already been scheduled for release in Summer 2013, so it seems unlikely that Dr. Strange will make the jump to the big screen before 2014 – perhaps, even around the same time that Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie finally arrives.

Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko co-created Dr. Strange back in 1963. The character began as a highly-respected and arrogant surgeon whose career came to an abrupt end after his hands were irreparably damaged in a car accident. He would eventually go on to become “Sorcerer Supreme” after saving the life of “The Ancient One” and subsequently being gifted with powerful magical abilities as a reward. In terms of appearance, Dr. Strange can be identified by his dark hair with graying temples, a thin mustache-goatee, and his trademark blue garbs, yellow gloves, and flowing red cloak. While self-appointed candidate Patrick Dempsey would actually be a decent fit for the character, someone like Liam Neeson admittedly bears a stronger physical resemblance.

A couple of the items glimpsed in Odin’s Vault in Thor do pave the way for an eventual movie based on the Dr. Strange comic, which has historically boasted some of the more surreal and bizarre imagery in the Marvel universe (Ditko’s illustrations have often been compared to the collective work of Salvador Dali). In the hands of a director with great visual prowess, a Dr. Strange movie could easily look unlike any other comic book adaptation out there.

While a Dr. Strange movie penned solely by Donnelly and Oppenheimer – whose resume includes Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, A Sound of Thunder, and Sahara – sounds less appetizing, it’s possible that several other writers will eventually be brought onboard to rework and polish off their draft before the day is out (case in point: some half a dozen different writers worked on Iron Man).

We’ll keep you posted on the status of the Dr. Strange movie as more information is released.

  1. who will reign sorcerer supreme!!!!!??????

    • Well, this was published two years ago and I’ve not seen nor heard anything about it since this article, so the project is likely shelved, at least for now. It’s too bad, too. Strange is one of my favorite Marvel characters.

      • Testing..

      • No lie! Dr. Strange never translated well into a comic medium but the animated movie demonstrated that, with a director like del Toro and movie-magic CGI, this would be one impressive light show!

  2. marvel is going mystical mojo on us,cool.

  3. I’d like a shot at the role, and i’d work cheap.
I know I have at least one great movie performance in me.
    Who do I call?

  4. Robert Downey Jr. Would be great, look at iron man

    • And, why are you typing? Is that ever going to happen, Waste of Space?

  5. James Marsters has a bone structure similar to strange

  6. Better do the film already and get liam neeson to play the part. He has already been tested in thriller action, action drama, action comedy and action contemporary. Just see the film Taken, Rob Roy, clash and wrath of the titans. He would have a great command in the said character. And another thing is he is quite kind and humble with his work and co-workers. Hop e you could see through the film. More power.

  7. Please please make this happen….Liam Neeson would be so perfect.i Have all the comic books and can’t wait to see this story in AVX 3D…..please don’t make it stupid like the firts Batman with danny Devitto as the Penguin……Make it dark and real.like the dark Night…bring in the spells and Dormamu and other sorcerers….I just cant contain myself.

  8. Colin Donnell would make a great Doctor S. Now that he’s done on Arrow as Tommy Merlyn he’d be ripe for the picking.

  9. Third Rock kid being the Master of the Mystic Arts? This would be a weak, easy-out-to-get-an-audience type of casting
choice. The kid can truly act, but that’s just it: He’s a KID. The one
important, reality-based feature of the character, one that is
absolutely pivotal to his origin, is that he is a world-renowned
neurosurgeon before he is even chosen to train to become a sorcerer.
It’s O.K. to ask the audience to buy into sorcery when it’s a genre
movie, but the reality elements cannot be ridiculous. Levitt looks
barely old enough to play a medical resident, let alone a top
    neurosurgeon in his field.

  10. No one gives a s*** what you all think about the character. All they are doing is putting the topic out there to count your heads and see how many respond.

  11. I am huge fan doctor strange and doctor strange movies will come to theather in 2016 and the actor is truly great choice to play doctor strange and also that the who,the ancient one, baron mordo, dormammu, clea, umar, nightmare, many other as well.

  12. I like Liam Neeson, but he’s a little older now, and how many Dr. strange movies can he do? I think Patrick Dempsey actually would do a good job and he’s still in his 40′s, and so will Johnny Depp. But both Liam and Johnny are over-exposed….maybe a fresh face like Patrick would be better…we shall see…

  13. Liam Neeson or Johny Depp these guys would be perfect :) can’t wait for a strange movie and FYI Strange did have contention with shield at one point or another so the story would fit even if it was a brief cameo in the next Avegers :)

    • No… Just No.

Christian Bale, Brian Cranston, Kevin Spacey, Keanu Reeves would be better than Neeson…

  14. Luke Evans…the obvious choice…

  15. Call me crazy but you know who’d make a great Dr. Strange?
    Sean Penn.

  16. I’d like to see Jim Caviezel. He’s mysterious, he looks like Dr Strange, and his acting is outstanding.

  17. Keanu Reeves would make the perfect Dr. Strange. He’s well established in action pictures, he’s the right age and he’s got an etheral quality.

  18. In my opinion, Jim Caviezel, would be best choice for Dr. Strange! Check the actor’s look in Count of Monte Cristo and compare that look with Dr. Strange! Link: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WycDL5HBtUs/UTxHhB8srYI/AAAAAAAAWHo/olSD2pqc1Bc/s1600/3.jpg

  19. I think john depp needs to be dr strange

  20. Dr Strange had his own comic in the UK as did Conan the Barbarian, I still have them. They did a TV movie back in the seventies, but with special effects so well developed these days it should be much better. I wonder who the villain will be Baron Mordo, Nightmare or The Dread Dormammu.

  21. Toby Stephens. See his work in Strike Back, Black Sails, etc.

  22. Robert Beltran would make a goood Dr. Strange

  23. Cumberbatch would be ok but imo Rufus Sewell would be awesome as Strange

  24. Keanu Reeve would make the ultimate Dr. Strange!
