The official trailer has arrived for Netflix and Marvel TV's miniseries event, The Defenders. Following the release of Iron Fist season 1 - the fourth installment in Marvel/Netflix's growing collection of TV shows featuring the "street-level" superheroes of New York in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - earlier this year, this summer's The Defenders will unite Danny Rand aka. Iron Fist (Finn Jones) with his fellow crime-fighting New York residents; that includes, Matt Murdock aka. Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Luke Cage (Mike Colter).

Daredevil season 2 showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez are leading the charge on Marvel's The Defenders behind the camera, with Jessica Jones season 1's S.J. Clarkson calling the shots on the TV miniseries' first two episodes. The eponymous superhero team will also be joined onscreen here by a number of supporting characters that were introduced to the MCU over the course of the four Netflix/Marvel TV series that have been released thus far. Simone Missick as Misty Knight (who debuted during Luke Cage season 1) and Elodie Young as Elektra Natchios (who joined the MCU in Daredevil season 2) are among those side players who show up in the official Defenders trailer that is now online.

The on-the-street confrontation between Misty and Jessica, which leads to the terse interrogation room showdown between them at the beginning of The Defenders trailer, is one of several moments that fans were able to glimpse ahead of time, via leaked photos from the TV miniseries' set during filming. Similarly, both the trailer and previously-released set photos for The Defenders confirm that Luke and Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) will be "getting some coffee" and resuming their romance from Luke Cage season 1, in the miniseries.

Marvel's The Defenders team

In addition to showing what happens the first time that the various Defenders cross paths with one another (see Matt becoming Jessica's lawyer or Danny punching future Heroes for Hire partner Luke in the face), The Defenders trailer further teases Sigourney Weaver's villainous Alexandra and her connection to the villainous ninja organization known as The Hand. Jessica Henwick, who is reprising her MCU role as Colleen Wing for The Defenders, has confirmed that the miniseries picks up a month after Iron First season 1, so The Hand may be looking for some payback here, after the blow dealt to them by Danny and Colleen (not to mention, Matt's previous encounter with them back in Daredevil season 2).

While The Punisher Marvel/Netflix series is confirmed to arrive later this year, the future of the Marvel/Netflix corner of the MCU post-Defenders, remains somewhat up in the air for now. New seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have all been confirmed, but no release dates have been set yet. Similarly, with so many Marvel TV characters crossing paths for the first time in The Defenders season 1, it will be interesting to see if the miniseries winds up giving rise to any of the smaller team-up spinoff series (such as Heroes for Hire and/or Daughters of the Dragon) that many Marvel Comics fans have already begun calling for.
