How To Make The Perfect ‘Daredevil’ TV Series

by Kevin Yeoman
(15 of 14)

What If Marvel Made A Daredevil TV Series?

Questions still remain regarding the live-action rights to Daredevil, after Marvel was reportedly willing to grant Twentieth Century Fox an extended period of time to develop a new feature film around the blind superhero. With Marvel interested in widening the audience for its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film, the deal reportedly stated Fox could hold onto the Daredevil rights in exchange for Marvel being granted access to two of its key interstellar characters that Fox currently holds; namely, the purple-helmeted planet eater, Galactus and his shiny herald, the Silver Surfer.

What sounded like a good idea and a pretty fair trade would unfortunately prove fruitless, leaving Fox to briefly consider doing a gritty, '70s-inspired reboot from The A-Team and The Grey director, Joe Carnahan. Besides Carnahan's sizzle reel being met with something between mild enthusiasm and total apathy, the problem simply became the lack of time Fox had to get a quality project in production by the first part of October. And with that, it seems the rights to Daredevil are very close to being back in Marvel's hands.

In the event Daredevil does wind up back at the House of Ideas, there're many options available to the character. With Joss Whedon, developing not only a sequel to the billion-dollar grossing film, The Avengers, but a S.H.I.E.L.D. television series as well, maybe there is room for Matt Murdock in one of those. While that would be nice, we think The Man Without Fearcould make for a great television series all on his own. Here's a look at how the series might play out and our top choices to cast this little Marvel What If?

    James Gandolfini for Kingpin!!!

I like Josh Jackson as DD, and Biggs as Franklin (a series that should be dark SHOULD have some comedy and Biggs can pull it off) as for Bullseye? I dont have a preference, as long as he has the build and the voice.

I also enjoyed reading that “Wilson Fisk rules New York’s underworld with an iron fist”, Iron Fist, could that be a pun? Hoping for some crossovers/team-ups? I would love to see that as well. :D

Great ideas on the (potential) series here.

      Gandolfini wouldn’t do it…

Kick @ss if he did, he would be the best out of anyone if you ask me…

BTW, did he actually say that he wouldnt do it? I would think that if it goes to Marvel, EVERYONE would like a piece of that billion dollar pie.

If Marvel/Disney asked someone to play a character, who would say no? Its Marvel, and you know they would make a TON of money, so I find it hard to believe he would pass it up, unless he is totally nuts. So did he say that he wouldnt do that role? I’m not trying to be mean or nothing, just would like to know if he said that or not.

Sorry, Gina Carano should be reserved for Gamora.

Or maybe a role where she did not have to talk or act. She is not a very good actress!

Please oh please don’t let her be in a Marvel or DC based movie.

Who other ripped (hot) Actress is out there for Gamora? We’re talking about, “The Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe.” The actress who plays her has to be ripped.

No Elektra? I’d personally have to think of who I’d want to see as her, but I’m surprised she didn’t make this list.

I’d love to see Punisher, Moon Knight, Iron Fist and Luke Cage crossover into the show, too.

I agree, Elektra would have to be a given in a Daredevil show.

I agree again! There could be plenty of opportunities to introduce lower level characters. Love that idea.

if memory serves, Fox wont lose the rights to Elektra for another couple of years. But I could be wrong

A tv show could be great for DD i’d love it, great casting man i could picture James Dale as matt murdock and Daredevil but if they are going to keep DD in the shared universe i’d make no sense if he was playing a villain in Iron Man 3 and then a crime fighter in New York. I always felt that Ben Affleck would have made a great Daredevil if the story had just been better i think that Mark Steven Johnson was new to the whole directing action franchises thing so therefore he wasn’t the best director they could’ve gotten.

But is there news for a Daredevil tv show because i’d love to see one if there is i’m looking foward to it :)

Haha…it’s be hilarious to see TJ in a suit trying to cross examine a witness. If they went full comedy for Foggy he’d be great..

      Reply
      • Sloan    9 months ago

True but Foggy is solely an comic character, some of the later storylines had him in a very grim position. If not Oswald Patton how about Oliver Platt? Handles both comic and drama well. And what about Karen -Matt’s loyal assistant?. BTW Luke Goss would make an great Bullseye-check out Hellboy2 and Blade 2 his badguys were the highpoints of the films!

        Reply
        • Ace    9 months ago

Oh yea Patton is definetly the best choice he can do comedy and drama pretty well. By his own omission, if you listen to his podcast which I highly recommend, TJ isn’t really an actor….I find him hilarious in everything I’ve seen him in, but he wouldn’t be able to handle the more serious stuff close to they way Patton would….and yea they’d have to have a Multi-layered character for Foggy for it to work.

I just got done reading Jason Aaron’s PunisherMax. Bullseye was portrayed as the craziest villain I’ve ever seen. If they could capture any of that, along with the brilliant portrayal of the Kingpin, you might have one of the greatest shows ever to grace TV sets.

I think kevin is a Spartacus fan. :p

I don’t know about this… would they be able to show the violence of a Mary and bullseye week after week?

ABC – if its violent It won’t be on channel.
CW – Doubt that they would want any Marvel related shows.
Fox – do you really want to go down that road?
CBS – the last superhero show they had was the flash from 1990? they dont seem ready or willing.
NBC – they probably would take a chance on a superhero show but they just can not help sticking their noses in things and messing it up.

    • Los    9 months ago

ohh maybe AMC would do it!!!

      Reply
    • Ace    9 months ago

It would be on ABC most likely at 10, since Disney owns the character (or will shortly) and they own the channel….I doubt they’d give it to another network.

The use of editing and camera angles can more than display what thoses two are particularly capable of. 10 o’clock shows get away with a lot of gore nowadays…look at Grimm.

      Reply
      • Los    9 months ago

I agree that they can get away with more at that time slot but i just don’t see 1) Disney producing a violent show and 2) putting it on ABC.
They are very protective of their image and standard. Drama ok, comedy ok, action (as long as it’s not super expensive) ok but violence not going to happen.

I disagree with all of the choices for Fisk. One thing you cant change about a DD movie or show, is The Kingpins size. Obvious he can’t be as big as he is in the comics, but he needs to be big and sorta tall. Kind of like the Big Show

    Reply
    • awiz68    9 months ago

Where are they gonna find somebody that size who can act? The Big Show is HUGE lol. And he himself would be a terrible choice… Someone else mentioned James Gandolfini who is not even that big, but I don’t think he’d do it…

      Reply
      • mongoose    9 months ago

Well a CGI version of him might not be out of the question, especially if it’s down the road a spell but I admit that for a TV series that may be impractical.

One Day we won’t have to make hard choices about whether an actor looks like the superhero they are portraying. They will be 100% CGI and completely believable (and match exactly) so it will be all about the voice at that point ;)

What they need to do is find an unknown for the Kingpin. Sadly, I am built sort of like he is. I am a former power lifter with a bunch of bulky muscle and a nice layer of fat over it. Haha, I’m definitely not bragging about it.

I’m not sure if I can think of anyone off the top of my head, but a very tall Russian or Pollock who has a deep voice and the stare of death is mandatory. As I mentioned earlier, PunisherMax (Jason Aaron’s run)had the best Kingpin I can imagine. He was just a brute who was unassuming and just looked like a typical bouncer in a club. I don’t think it would be hard to find this sort of type-actor, I just don’t think there has been a lot of roles cast for them.

A former offensive lineman perhaps. Maybe I should go for the role. I’m just not tall enough at 6’1″. Need at least 6’6″. Taller would be better, and wide as can be.

James Gandolfini! Never even thought of that, BRILLIANT. He might not be as big as the comics couterpart but he would fit perfectly.

I wonder what the actor who plays Hurley in Lost (sorr name escapse me) is like in terms of range. I can really only picture him as jovial, I wonder if he could pull off the Kingpin of crime

  12. Michael B.    9 months ago

I think that the Kingpin’s trick is that he doesn’t actually look menacing, which is why it is hard for the general public to pin him as the Kingpin. The one person, who may not look like him – due to his long hair – is Jorge Garcia who played Hugo in Lost.

    Reply
    • awiz68    9 months ago

Jorge Garcia is just FAT, no way… King Pin is big and HUGE (meaning tall), Gandolfini would be great, even with that accent…but as I said before it just doesn’t seem like something he’d do. It’d have to have some quality to it and not just be a cheesy comic book caricature.

If you want the comic book size for Kingpin put an actor in a blue suit and CGI the big onto him? Might be too expensive for a TV show and might look out of place too. Or it might really set the show off.

As for Kingpin maybe Ving Rhames? If not Kingpin make him Tombstone.

Cast someone weird as the Owl…

Have Scarlett Johansen guest star occasionally….

after the dreadful movie version of ben affleck playing daredevil and the passing of micheal clarke duncan who played kingpin id like to see a daredevil series or the hero included in avengers 2 or 3 and bradley cooper or henry cavill would make a great matt murdoch with robbie coltrain as kingpin..

Finally! Finally, someone agrees with me! I’ve been clamouring for a DD tv series for quite a while now on SR. DD has all it takes to make a perfect series. I believe it has a 90% chance of success (judging from the success rate of legal/CSI/superhero genres on tv) which is quite good. DD would be a combination of all three genres- though it might have a different sort of approach to CSI i.e. using his super-sensory perception skills to unearth clues.

I agree with your casting options, Kev. Very well done! It must have taken quite sometime to complete. There was always one perfect fit amongst the three you suggested- save for one character though: Kingpin. As much as I agree with you that Fisk does not need to be as huge as he is in the comics (what with the level of health awareness these days you’d hardly get actors that size anymore- life in Hollywood is too sweet!:)) but we can try to get someone big at least- with a commanding presence. I don’t think Gandolfini would be the ideal Kingpin though. I’d rather go for the more commanding, friendly yet ruthless-looking, deep-voiced Zlatko Buric. Remember him? He was the burly Russian billionaire in ’2012′. Also, I don’t think he’s that busy either to turn down the role. Take time and google images of the fella, you’d see what I mean. My second option, i.e. if we insist that height is not an issue, would be Dennis Franz (formerly on NYPD Blue?). I know he’s a bit old now but still good. Guy can shoot daggers with his eyes, I tell you-a real killer look-and can also appear fatherly. No? Okay, Zlatko all the way then!

Peter Mensah would make a good Stick but I’m also worried about him being typecast as everyone’s mentor/physical trainer. Peter MENTAH, I’d start calling him!I think that’s how the word would be pronounced in his native Ghana. That being said, he’s a great choice nevertheless and already has proper martial arts training. You also forgot to mention that he has comic book movie credits to his name, having acted as a general in The Incredible Hulk and also as the Persian messenger in 300.

What I however disagree with you is the ‘swashbuckling approach’ you wish the series to follow. I don’t know how well it’s working in comics now (though DD winning Best New Series and Best Writer at this year’s Harvey Awards speaks well) but I fell in love with DD comics during the Frank Miller era (anyone remember the episode where he fought Gladiator in a wax museum? Niice!) and I liked the general grit about it with Foggy coming in as comic relief. I think Miller’s narrative style which was successfully reproduced onscreen in 300 and Sin City could also be adopted in a DD series: a TV series with a graphic novel appeal! Okay, perhaps not all through but let’s say in scenes where DD uses his enhanced senses of perception (kinda like how Holmes narrates his planned strikes before actually doing them in RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies).

Definitely, DD has more than enough interesting villains (e.g. Gladiator, The Rose, The Unholy Three, Deathstalker (who has links with AIM which has links with SHIELD-hint, hint),Silvermane, The Hand, etc)and opportunities for subtle cameos (e.g. Heroes for Hire, Peter Parker) to keep us busy for many seasons to come.

    Hopefully, Marvel is listening!

Another character I had also mentioned who is (better?) suited for tv (eg on HBO) is Punisher. His three failed movies add credence to this claim IMO. Probably to be first introduced as a character in DD then, with enough positive feedback, put in his own series – like Angel was from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

    I’ve been dream-casting DD for 27 years. Here’s my CURRENT list…

Daredevil- Matt Bomer (Michael Weatherly if he was younger)
Kingpin- John Goodman (the MOST OBVIOUS CHOICE EVER!!!)
Foggy- Patton Oswalt (Oliver Platt if he was younger)
    Bullseye- Luke Goss (inspired!)
    Typhoid Mary- Katee Sackhoff
    Elektra- Gina Carano
Stick- Scott Glenn (always my first choice)
    Jack- Holt McCallany
