Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada has been talking a lot lately about upcoming Marvel projects – he recently discussed some of the upcoming comic book developments for The Rebirth of Captain America, and more recently, about Iron Man 2 and Thor.
Quesada posted some comments on his web column about both projects, such as what direction the movies are being taken in and a bit about what it’s like working with directors Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2) and Kenneth Branagh (Thor). Check out this hot info poured straight from the Cup ‘O Joe:

On Iron Man 2:
Favreau is really, really intense and very cerebral. I remember having a dinner at Comic-Con, I want to say three years ago, where he just grabbed me…He introduced himself to me, put his hand on my shoulder, sat me down at a table, and we just sat there and talked. We almost skipped dinner…we just sat there and talked Iron Man, and he wanted to know who he is and why Tony Stark does what he does. That was really key to Favreau: why put on the suit and try to do good things? It was a much tougher question once he defeats the Iron Monger, gets his tech and his company back…why continue doing this? What does Tony Stark stand for?
On Thor:
Kenneth…He’s definitely about character, which is the quintessential trait you have to have to understand the Marvel characters. It’s not just big hammers and capes and things like that. It’s about what makes the character tick. There’s definitely a reason for Thor, a reason for him being and a very deep family relationship and story in the movie that I think is going to be very cool. Oh yeah, and there’s reasons and motivations for him to hit people with his hammer… hard!
Both are great quotes that hint at Quesada’s attitude about both Iron Man 2 and Thor, but if you feel you need to get the full scoop, feel free to take a dip in the Cup ‘O Joe.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada
For me, it’s good to hear that both Branagh and Favreau are doing well in the eyes of Joe Quesada. JQ had a HUGE influence on the Marvel Comics that I grew up on (the 90s era of Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, etc…) and I’ve always liked what he’s tried to do as Marvel Editor-in-Chief. The man really gets the characters and what made them enduring and great – and, from the sound of things, he is a pretty good bridge to making great and enduring Marvel movies.
However, the proof still remains to be seen when Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010 and Thor hits theaters on May 20, 2011. Let us know what you thought about Joe Quesada’s comments.

I hope he sticks to his word about Thor and makes it about character because we want to see someone developed and not just a god who doesn’t speak or have emotion.
He actually doesn’t say that much at all..or at least nothing we didn’t already know about Favreau and Branagh
Iron Man: What’s my motivation?
Thor: What my Dad means to me and why I carry a big hammer..
Well, Joe Quesada is fantastic… UNLESS you’re talkin’ Spider-Man comics. Then it’s just… blargh!
But, the man obviously does know what he’s doing for everything else as he’s put Marvel Comics back on the map not too long after the company filed for bankruptcy.
Actually, I’m surprised to see that Favreau had to ask him these questions. I guess he must not have been an Iron Man fan originally, then?
The tidbit about Thor has me excited about how much they seem to care about that movie, but I’m still wondering how they’ll pull it off. That’s going to be a really tricky movie to make attractive to the modern audience.
(Though it must be said, it’s nice that we had the God of War video games to appeal to kids… at least mythology has a certain “coolness” factor these days.)
Joe Quesada was one of my favorite artisits back in the day. His X-Factor stuff was awesome, as was his Ash and Ninjak comics.
Unfortunatley when he took over as Editor-in-chief at Marvel, their quality of story and artwork went down and it totally lost me to reading any new books. The gritty new look of the X-Men started it after the 1st movie came out. They figured “Well, the movie did so great, lets make the comic look just like it” and that was mostly Quesada’s idea and then they started to do it to the rest of their titles. That along with all the Ultimate titles he had people create just completely took me out of the comic book loop for the past 9 years or so, and from what I hear, I havent missed much other than Civil War being decent and the House of M crap.
OK, I am done ripping on Joe Q (I wish he still was with Jimmy Palmiotti though, that was a great combo)
