The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always looking for new avenues to explore on a variety of platforms. Whether these projects arrive on the big screen, television, streaming, or online, the audience Marvel is reaching continues to grow. One of their projects that they hope will reach a new demographic is Cloak & Dagger. The series has been pitched as a teenage romantic drama that follows the lives of Tandy Bowen aka Dagger and Tyronne Johnson aka Cloak - and their growing affection for each other.

Marvel Television will make Cloak & Dagger their first series to air on Freeform, a sister network to ABC, and recently announced Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt have been cast in the lead roles of Cloak and Dagger respectively. With filming reportedly beginning sometime this month, the first photo of the stars united sparked speculation that filming was underway. Thanks to the pilot director, that has now been confirmed.

Gina Prince-Bythewood is directing the first episode of the series and took to Instagram today to announce the start of production. While the photo itself initially does not look to offer much detail, a closer look shows the beginning of Tandy's tragic past. More on that later, but for now, here is the picture:

Since it is not a surprise that filming is now underway, the finer details of the photo are more interesting. The photo features what could be a snippet of a storyboard teasing the traumatic experience Tandy experiences as a young girl. When the photo is enlarged, details of a car crash involving Tandy and her father are revealed. The scene/shot description shows Mr. Bowen unconscious in a car with a deployed airbag and water rising up to his chin. Tandy tries to wake up her father, but the attempt is useless as her father is already dead.

For a show that is being geared towards a teenage audience, this is a heavy way to presumably begin. There is no indication as to whether or not Tandy's mother is involved in this crash as well, but with Andrea Roth being cast in that role, she could be safe. In the comics, Dagger's relationship with her mom is strained, her biological father absent, and eventually her stepfather dies as well. Marvel could use this first hand experience with the death of her father as a reason to make the mother/daughter relationship tense, thus sending Tandy on a mission to leave and ultimately gain her powers.

These details could be far off from being confirmed at this moment, but with filming now officially underway, more details could come to light soon enough. Whether or not these details include potential looks at the young actors in their superhero costumes remains to be seen, so we will have to wait even longer for that answer.
