The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has been on the air for two fairly successful seasons – our own Kofi Outlaw gave the season one premiere episode a fairly glowing review. Season two has been particularly appreciated for its crossover episodes with the Fantastic Four and Wolverine, among other Marvel characters.
Unfortunately, after much speculation and despite fan acclaim, Marvel has officially (and somewhat shockingly) canceled The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in favor of a new series Avengers Assemble. The bittersweet announcement came earlier this week from Marvel Animation by way of a very brief press release.
Check it out below:
“‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ won’t be renewed for the 3rd Season. Marvel Animation will present their newly developed series ‘Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’ in 2013.”
The release was accompanied by a promo image for Avengers Assemble that bears a striking resemblance to Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates. Check it out below (click to enlarge):
Marvel made a similar choice in the past when they replaced the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series with the less critically-acclaimed Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. While there’s still very little information about Avengers Assemble, it will apparently feature the same core characters as the Avengers movie with the addition of Falcon (who is rumored to be part of the upcoming Captain America 2 film). Hank Pym and Black Panther are expected to show up later in the series.
Fans of Avengers: EMH are undoubtedly gutted by the news of the popular show’s demise, which featured solid characters and writing based on classic Marvel comics stories – but the fact that the show would not see a third season has been hinted for some time now.
Back in April, Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Animation, gave some cryptic comments on the show’s future and even refused to answer direct questions as to whether or not the beloved cartoon would be renewed for a third season:
“I can only tell you that we’re committed to ‘The Avengers’ universe and that’s as far as I can go. We have big plans for ‘The Avengers.’”
After smashing box office records by bringing in over a billion dollars, it looks like Marvel seeks to ride the wave of the Avengers movie as far as it will take them. While seemingly a great idea, this can be a double-edged sword, as it further removes the classic (and current) comic book series from other Marvel media. Ultimately, Marvel could slap the brands of the Avengers, Spider-Man, and X-Men on pretty much anything and it would do fairly well, but as The Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes and the ’90s X-Men cartoon have proven, connecting an animated series with classic comic stories can result in great overall success.
In other superhero animation news, Marvel has announced the renewal of Ultimate Spider-Man for a second season. Season two will see Spidey teaming up with Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and the Hulk. Also, Buffy the Vampire Slayer bad-girl-turned-good-girl Eliza Dusku will be lending her voice to Disney XD’s upcoming Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H as the Hulk’s buxom cousin, She-Hulk. The series will feature the original (green) Hulk, Red Hulk, Skaar (Hulk’s son), and A-Bomb (the new Abomination).

Avengers Assemble will air on Disney XD next year.

i miss her already, if anyone is scouting this forum for there new show, A.A ADD WASP

I hate when great series like this gets cancelled for no other reason than money. They are replacing it with another show called “Avengers Assemble” for no other reason but to bring in more characters to introduce them for the upcoming movie sequels. As if they couldn’t have been added to this show at some point and accomplished the same thing. I’m not happy. I just really hope that the new show isn’t a bad step back. Because Avnegers EMH was really really good, and will be hard to top.
the wasp should definitely be there shes kinda what held everyone together
Deeply DISAPPOINTED!!!!!
this seems to happen every time with a great animated series . i don’t know why they do this. it’s hard enough to try to collect it as it is. they also seem to re-do them in different formats. if you miss one, good luck finding the rest of the series. money should not dictate a series success . i can only hope one day they will release the original fantastic 4 series before i croak.
Wow, there was nothing wrong with mightiest heroes and they’re replacing it with this crap. First teen titans and now this, is there no hope for the cartoon hero genre?? Seriously, nobody is doing anybody any favors by dumbing down great story lines and comic oil lore for the younger generation, if anything, they’re robbing them of infinitely Better entertainment. The animation is worse and the characters are spotty at best. This makes me sad.
This pisses me off that they are replacing emh. There was nothing wrong with it. Fans loved it, it got good ratings. Kids loved it. Why replace it and have to watch the origin stories play out and start over and they got rid of everyone and replaced all the cool characters that made the show with falcon. I hope this show fails miserably and that marvel has to make a season three of emh.

What really makes me angry is that The Avengers: EMH wasn’t even done with their story line and left a lot of loose ends. At least wrap it up before moving on to another project. I personally loved EMH and I was crushed to hear that AA was replacing it. All they’re doing is replacing a show with great ratings and tons of positive reviews with the same thing just for more money. This show was really going somewhere reaching levels I never would have expected and the storyline tying not only the Avengers together but the entire Marvel universe together. I am not happy about this and although I know for a fact I will be tuning in to watch Avengers Assemble and I’ll probably love it, I will not love it as much as EMH.
Also, I couldn’t be less happy that Falcon is joining the team and from the description it seems like he’s going to be the main character. The point of Avengers isn’t one main character it’s their unity as Avengers and focuses on every Avenger.
I blame Jeph Loeb. That guy is bad news.
I know it’s unfair to bash a series that I haven’t even seen, man, but that phrase “The release was accompanied by a promo image for Avengers Assemble that bears a striking resemblance to Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates” really rang an alarm in my head.
I LOATHE the Ultimate Universe. It is a failed experiment that someone, for some reason, refuses to shut down. It was meant to update Marvel “for the new millenium” and the first Ultimate stories already look dated. It also was meant to get rid of all those years of continuity… by creating a second continuity that already starts to get as encyclopedic as the main Marvel universe.
And The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes already proved there’s nothing wrong with the main Marvel Universe!
Well… maybe THAT’S why it’s getting nixed. Maybe TA:EMH reminded people how much fun classic Marvel stories can be, and that’s not good if you’re trying to sell them a replacement.
Or maybe they just want to cash in on the movie bonanza, which is cool. Just remember that that’s hardly a surefire way to success (remember that french FF cartoon?)
EMH will never be replced by Avengers Assemble.
I have these premeire episodes on in the background. This is horrible. It really is the most cookie-cutter crap I’ve seen since, well Ultimate Spider-Man. I guess if this is what the kids enjoy then it explains a lot about the younger generations.

I am not looking forward to breaking this news to my two daughters (6 and 8.) This show made them fall in love with the Marvel Universe. They love Wasp and Ms. Marvel. I love that there are great female characters in EMH for girls to relate to. What will AA have? Black Widow? That’s cool and all but very limited for girls. Though I will try my best to make it otherwise, I predict my daughters will lose interest in the Avengers without Their favorites girl butt-kickers. I am a very sad daddy.
