Kevin Feige Talks Black Widow’s Role in ‘Avengers 2′ & Her Eventual Solo Movie

Scarlet Johannson as Black Widow Kevin Feige Talks Black Widows Role in Avengers 2 & Her Eventual Solo Movie

Considering the expansiveness of Marvel’s cinematic universe, it’s unfortunate that there hasn’t been a single film with a woman as the lead character. We’re talking about nine films with men in most (if not all) the lead roles.

If Marvel is looking to change this and change it fast, there’s really only one female character with a large enough profile to carry her own film: Scarlet Johannson’s Black Widow. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will mark Black Widow’s third appearance in a Marvel film. For comparison, she equals Cap and Thor for number of appearances and is only surpassed by Iron Man, but is the only one of the four to not have her own film.

While promoting Captain America 2 to Total Film, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige discussed Black Widow’s role in the upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron and indicated that a solo film is still in the cards – eventually.

“We start filming the next ‘Avengers’ film at the end of March. [Black] Widow’s part in that is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”

So, not really any new developments on the solo film front, but it’s uplifting news to hear her role in Avengers 2 will be even larger than in The Avengers. It’s also something writer/director Joss Whedon has mentioned before.

As far back as Iron Man 2, there’s been discussion of Black Widow getting a solo film. And after Scarlet Johannson’s sensational return in The Avengers, where she was the sole woman on the team, talk of a Black Widow film only increased.

Johannson’s performance as Black Widow only improved from Iron Man 2 to the The Avengers where she perfected Natasha’s sly humor and killer moves. Just rewatch her introductory scene in The Avengers and you’ll get an idea of how fantastic a Black Widow film could be.

Back to The Winter Soldier – Feige remarked on how the film will significantly alter the current landscape of the MCU, a trend that will continue with The Avengers 2.

“We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film. We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of ‘Winter Solider’ than it is at the beginning. Therefore when we meet the Avengers at the top of ‘Age of Ultron,’ it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the first film. Partially that’s because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed – each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again.”

Judging from the ominous tone coming from The Winter Soldier‘s teasers and trailers, it would be a good guess that one of these changes will be the Avengers’ relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D. Even in previews, the tension between Cap and Nick Fury is palpable.

But what of Black Widow? Keeping in mind her history with the Winter Soldier, she will no doubt face some tough situations in Captain America 2. And if Natasha’s past is further explored in The Avengers 2, the character will be primed to star in her own film – and Phase Three would be as good a time as any for that to happen. Unfortunately, judging from the fact that there’s only been “some development” on a Black Widow film, that might be asking for too much too soon.

What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Is a Black Widow solo film something you want to see? And soon? Let us know in the comments below!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theatres April 4th. The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st, 2015.

  1. Love the Black Widow character but highly doubt we will ever get a movie. I just think Marvel can’t fit it in their schedule, unless they start pushing 3 movies a year.

    • I would be a little surprised if she got her own movie. I would certainly watch it and welcome it, but I frankly don’t think she is big enough to carry her own solo movie. I wonder how a captain Marvel movie with Monica Rambeau would do? Yes, I know that would be a shot in the dark out of left-field, but….well, why not? Probably have at least as good of a chance as a Black Widow flick or, say, a Spider Woman flick (despite the fact that Monica and SW have not been introduced in a live-action film yet…just kind of casting out random feelers and mindless speculation here). I would not mind a Moon Knight movie, either, while I am flipping out ideas.

    • Yup you re totally right. 2 movies per year is not enough to fit a Black Widow solo movie anytime soon. Plus i doubt it will be as succesful as the rest of the franchises unless it features other characters of the MCU which will make it weird for it to be a Black Widow movie if it has Thor , Cap ,Hulk Iron Man or Doctor Strange in it.

  2. No, please.

  3. I never heard she might be getting her own movie. It would be better if they just did a Shield movie instead with her,Hawkeye, and Nick Fury. That would be a better sell to the public.

    • Yeah, if they keep introducing more characters (Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, etc.) it’s hard to imagine time for a Black Widow film.

But I’d go for one. I wonder if Marvel will ever make “supplemental” films that aren’t huge-budget spectaculars. In my mind, Black Widow could be more of a psychological spy thriller, a smaller-scale thing. Less investment, but still a lot of upside due to the character’s popularity…if it was good.

      • Captain Marvel is a DC character!!!!

        • DC Comics didn’t hold a license to the Captain Marvel character created by Fawcett Comics until 1972. By then, Marvel had snatched the rights to the name (1967).

  4. Honestly I want a Black Widow and Hawkeye film based on (well probably ending) the comment about Budapest.

Tell it from her point of view as a Russian assassin that has attracted S.H.I.E.L.D. attention and sends Hawkeye to take her out. They have an encounter. Hawkeye has an opportunity to kill her but spares her because something bigger is going on and they end up teaming up to stop it which leads to her desire to balance the ledger and be one of the good guys. She switches sides, big showdown in Budapest, everyone goes home happy.

    Or something like that.

    • Yup. It could be that loose ends from Budapest need tying up. Flashback to elaborate and establish the stakes. Return to present time to have her go AWOL from SHIELD to take care of business. Hawkeye would go after her and things go from bad to worse.

Heck, you could even tie it back to the overall issues facing SHIELD or the Avengers.

I’d buy that for a lot more than a dollar.

    • i like this….i also want to see how she became such a good spy

      • Red Room. Duh. Look it up. But yeah, that does absolutely need to be included.

    • YES! WOOHOOOOO SOMEONE WITH A BRAIN!!!! They have to do a movie for them, they have too many hints in the Avengers not to. There’s Budapest, Russia, her becoming a spy so young, the ENTIRE conversation with Loki, and the fact that SHE KNOWS WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE UNMADE!!!! Brainwashing(duh)! And with Budapest, it should be like when their partnership begins, or when she starts to trust him, or something even bigger, but with fighting everywhere. It has to resemble the battle of New York, but have a deeper meaning that Clint would remember as significant but Natasha wouldn’t. Like trusting, or friendship, or marriage, or sleeping together. I’ve read a lot of Budapest fanfictions, if you can’t tell. But you are the one commenter that gets this!!

  5. Would love to have a Hawkeye/Black Widow film, because they were just awesome together in The Avengers.

Definitely wouldn’t mind a solo Black Widow film, though–that’d be great.

  6. I wouldn’t mind a black widow movie…but i’d rather see something like widow/hawkeye or widow/winter soldier or a shield movie with black widow, hawkeye and winter soldier..

  7. I’d rather watch paint dry than see a Black Widow movie. There are too many other Marvel characters who need a solo movie before Black Widow.

If they did make her movie she would have to get guest appearances from Cap, Ironman, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Falcon, War machine, and Heroes for hire for me to be interested.

    • You hurt me. In my soul. You’re killing me. If you don’t want a Black Widow movie, why’d you read this in the first place????

  8. Yea, in all seriousness Marvel should fast track that actually. A Black Widow/Hawkeye film is a great idea and would be a good filler movie b4 Avengers 3.
Finally saw Don Jon and Scar Jo really surprised me!

  9. Finally saw KickAss 2, too. And, it was crap, but watching HitGirl was like watching a young Black Widow…which needs to be filmed like..asap.

  10. What about a Nick Fury movie starring Laurence Fishburne?

    • Ha! I see what you did there.

  11. If you think about it, movies like Salt, or Colombiana…why not just use “Black Widow” for all of those from now on. Like you can even cast different actresses for each one….she’d be like James Bond.

  12. A Black Widow film starring ScarJo set in the MCU?

Shut up and take my money. Why hasn’t this already happened?

    • I KNOW RIGHT!!!!!! Shut up and take my money. I like that. I may have to steal it. I like it.

  13. My only problem with this Black Widow, is where the hell is the Russian accent?

    • if your a spy i’m sure you can put on many accents to not stand out in a crowd….but her booty does attract attention

      • JW seemed to like it, as it was front & center in more than 1 scene in The Avengers, not that I had a problem with that…

    • A lot of people from a lot of different countries speak english with no noticeable accent. I know a few of them.

  14. I would be more interestded in seeing a Hawkeye Black Widow movie. They had decent chemistry in the Avengers and I would be interested to see a partnership film. Two super spies along the lines of the Born movies or the MI movies.

  15. ABSOLUTELY wanna see a Black Widow movie. Would like to see some backstory about how she & Hawkeye (HAS to be J Renner) met/teamed up etc in part of it. They really need to get on the ball with it tho. I love the entire franchise & not having read the comics idk the individual details from each character story. Furthermore it’s really cool to have all the technically separate movies Iron Man, Thor, Capt. America & Hulk that intereweave with each other & Avengers. It makes it more “real” for the audience. Also creates more of a “other world” feel as opposed to just separate franchises that NEVER touch on the fact that they all got together & kicked butt as if it was a dream or they all have amnesia. Even if it’s just a verbal recollection or reminder in character conversation or in the now famous Marvel extras in the credits. It ties them together & let’s us have a taste of things to come. Also they need to do it while these guys & gals can still play the same characters. Because NOTHING ruins the authenticity of a story by changing actors midstream. Love Scarlett J as Black Widow. Love all the actors as they are. I had doubts about Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk but loved him when I saw it. As far as The Hulk movies go in last 10-15yrs he’s my fav. Even reminded me of the guy from the series that played Bruce Banner. I know reactions were negative towards him so he’s probably out. Sucks. If they’re going to be on board for #1 they should have to commit to so many. When they switch up actors it’s not the new actor that bugs me, it’s the change midstream. Feels like it ruins the authenticity of story when they do that. I mean look at all the Batman movies before the Christian Bale versions. Absolutely sucked after #2 they kept changing out Batman. That was ok for the movies individually but sucked when you looked back to each previous one. It’s just not believable. I wanna live in the movie I’m watching because I get sucked into & everything else disappears for 2 hours. Kinda hard to do if you’re sitting there thinking, sure wish this wasn’t yet again another Batman, Hulk etc. That’s my opinion! We LOVE all things super hero at our house! Anxiously awaiting April.

  16. Marvel could gauge interest forva BW movie by doing a Marvel One Shot about what happened in Budapest have Jermey Renner co-star as Hawkeye & you got gold.

    • Marvel could bill her as a female James Bond. Who wouldn’t want to see a sexy female super spy with a bunch of cool 007 type gadgets with a shady past trying to “remove the red from her ledger”?

      • There is your problem right there. Yes, women in comic books have been sexuallized to the max in the past, but it’s the 21st century and you are still talking sexy as your main attraction.

  17. ScarJo is worth watching in almost anything. Just give her the solo movie already.

  18. Yes…yes….please… A BW solo movie !

That battle scene between BW & HAWKEYE with the Chitauri soldiers in the 1st Avenger movie still a mystery for most fans.

BW : ” this reminds me of Budapest”
H : ” you and I remember Budapest very differently”

Also explore her origin as well.
    Please Marvel. Make it so.

    • budapeSHt.

    • “It’s like Budapest all over again!”
“You and I remember Budapest very differently”
It’s like budapest, not this reminds me of budapest.

  19. Black Widow has never disappointed me in any of the Marvel movies she’s been in. Every scene she’s commanded the screen and although there a lot of female heroes in the Marvel universe that could get a solo movie, the reality is that the demographic Marvel/Disney is appealing to doesn’t know about them. This new generation aren’t avid comic book readers. the cartoon series that are out now don’t really have a strong presence from another Female superhero except Black Widow. A solo film with I think would be dope. I’ve loved her since that fight scene she had in Iron Man 2. It would also open up the opportunity for them to introduce newer like they do in other films. Iron Man introduced War Machine and Black Widow. Cap introduced Falcon. In The Avengers, Agent Coulson sent Widow to fetch The hulk. Her movie could be centered on her investigating strange events that could possibly introduce one or more NEW potential Avengers or she could be sent back up when s*** hits the fan and that person could be a new Avenger. It’s all about strategy and I’m open to them introducing as many Avengers as possible so that when it’s time to face Thanos…it’s Epic!

  20. They have talked about it since the vid release of Iron Man 2 so this isn’t much of a news flash…I doubt it but anything is possible. I’d rather see a Hawkeye film before a Black Widow film (dealing with a Cross Tech storyline)

As for the mission in Budapest the answer is a flat out NO but a storyline could have connection to that so long as it moves the story forward and is not a prequel/backstory.

Either way, a spinoff of Widow or Hawkeye would have to introduce new characters to the MCU, most likely Mockingbird.

  21. Lots of scarlett johansson is always a goood thing in my boook.

  22. I couldn´t really tell if I want a Black Widow solo movie…

  23. I doubt it will happen especially with the tight schedule and queue for solo movies before Avengers 3.
Plus, I would prefer a Hulk or Hawkeye movie, or give Widow a teamup movie featuring Wasp, Scarlet Witch and Ms. Marvel… The female Avengers! :D

  24. yes please…since the opening scene in Avengers i was convinced she was badass, this could be a cool way of telling a origin story for Winter Soldier and Black Panther along the lines of her infiltrating Wakanda for Bucky’s arm etc…

  25. Off topic: sorry it bugs me. Who would have the rights for a spider woman movie

    • I would have to believe Marvel does. The Jessica Drew and Julia Carpenter incarnations were Avengers. Also, she really has never had anything to do with Spider-Man other than sharing a look/name.

      • Also, I believe Jessica Drew was a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.

  26. No.

Reason she is one member of sheild. Yes she’s an avenger but she is a sheild agent. Do I care about budapest no.

Id rather see a true representation of sheild rather than scarjo trying to be a superspy.

    So no black widow movie.

  27. I have an idea, far fetched but it sounds right to me. Why not make a SHIELD, origin movie(just please be better than that god awful wolverine movie). Have a film that goes through the various origins of Widow, hawkeye, Fury, Coulson, and maybe Redfords character for winter solider( that is if he isn’t the red skull in disguise) and shows how normal humans reacted to learning about super humans the world of spies, the lives they left behind to join shield. I think it could be a fantastic down to earth and human movie that’s completely away from the land of super heroes.

    • That actually sounds really awesome!

  28. We have already seen a Black Widow solo movie..its called SALT with Angelina Jolie. But I would def watch another iteration of this movie IF it the tone is more like James Bond and not like Iron Man 3.

  29. Yawwwwwwwn! BW’s character is so boring, think I’d fall asleep during the movie…. Perhaps put in Hawk-eye for a massive yawn-fest! The only bit of Avengers that wasn’t boring with BW in it I could have watched with the sound off ;)
