Marvel Black Panther Movie Marvels Black Panther Movie Confirmed? [Updated]

[Update: There are conflicting reports as to the status of Black Panther.  Scroll down for details.]

Comic book movie rumors are coming hard and fast in the summer 2012 season, and all of them are exciting. There has already been much speculation about plot points of both Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 - what villains will be featured, how they will build towards Avengers 2, etc. – and now we have yet another Marvel movie rumor that is sure to titillate fans:

Word is, one of the yet-unannounced films that Marvel Studios has planned (likely for 2014) is the long-rumored Black Panther movie. Scroll down for details.

Our friends over at Latino Review are continuing to drop exclusives like they’re going out of style, and the latest comes from a handful of their “trusted sources” who all claim that Black Panther is on the way. Also rumored for a 2014 debut have been the long-in-development Ant-Man movie from Edgar Wright, and a Doctor Strange movie. Until we hear official confirmation from Marvel (say… around Comic-Con 2012?), any one of those films (or another unexpected pick) could be fair game for announcement.

For those who don’t know, Black Panther (the alter-ego of T’Challa, prince of the fictional African nation of Wakanda), is a superhero with enhanced strength and agility, who uses his intellect, mysticism, and a variety of technological weapons developed from his country’s primary resource – the metal alloy known as “vibranium” – to fight evil. Basically, he’s like an African version of Batman. The character debuted in 1966 as the first mainstream black superhero, and has been a member of The Avengers since 1968. Many Marvel movie fans have been campaigning for Black Panther to join the Marvel Movie Universe (MMU); we even had him as one of our top picks for characters we want to see in Avengers 2.

This rumor comes as little surprise: A Black Panther project is something that Marvel (and other studios) have been trying to get off the ground for many years. Wesley Snipes was once attached to a Black Panther film Columbia Pictures was developing in the ’90s; more recently, writer Mark Bailey was hired to pen a Black Panther screenplay for Marvel Studios, while  Marvel Animation launched a cartoon version of the character – though that came and went so fast, few people likely know it exists. (You can check out the first episode HERE). In the first season of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon – which is a direct echo of the MMU – Black Panther was also a late addition to the team, so clearly, launching the character into the mainstream has been on Marvel’s agenda for some time.

UPDATE: Coming Soon states that their sources inside of Marvel Studios are denying this rumor. Then again, the studio always denies rumors. Marvel denied it when Latino Review revealed the Avengers Thanos news – and we all know how that turned out.

Captain AMerica Black Panther Marvels Black Panther Movie Confirmed? [Updated]

Black Panther vs. Captain America

Black Panther is a character that is beloved with good reason. Simply put: he’s pretty awesome (as African Batman would understandably be). The MMU could also stand to diversify a bit (as it stands, Black Widow is the Avengers entire diversity program, not counting Nick Fury), and the character has many ties to the established Avengers movie universe, as Wakanda gets a quick acknowledgment in Iron Man 2, and Captain America’s shield is constructed from Vibranium – which also happens to be an alien metal. See the picture coming together?

The only question left, is: Who could play the Black Panther at this point? (For the record, guys like Snipes, Djimon Hounsou, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje are too old, and Idris Elba is already part of the Thor franchise. So set your nominations accordingly.)

We’ll keep you updated as to whether or not anything truly pans out in regards to this Black Panther movie.

  1. Michael B Jordan

    • OMG I AGREE, but michael b. jordan is already playing johnny storm in the new fantastic 4 movie.

    • No! Great actor but just no.

    • @c revolution – That’s exactly what I believe many of us fans want to see and why a character like Black Panther is so damn important. I love Marvel characters and I love what the studio has done since they formed in 2008. Marvel has done just about everything right so far with the exception of one thing, diversity. Like I said before I love Marvel characters, but it’s time to see more than just basically white male superheroes on the screen, it’s 2013 and you have to be more diversified than that today, surely Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios must understand that. I love seeing War Machine, Heimdall and now Falcon being on the big screen, but like I said before those are supporting characters and always will be, but Black Panther & Luke Cage are a different story, those characters don’t stand behind nobody, side by side yes. Also more female superheroes have been sorely missing and must be put on the big screen as well, like Ms. Marvel, She Hulk, Wasp & Spider-Woman. Black Widow is a nice start and Scarlett Witch will be a cool edition, but you need more than that.

      • agree

  2. now that I think of it I really don’t like the falcon costume in captain america 2 since they didn’t keep the color scheme which is essential since they kept captain america’s color scheme the same.

  3. Michael Jai White would be a perfect fit

    • He has the physicality but not enough acting ability also too old I want someone who can stay with the franchise. I know they switched Spider-man but I would like for them to get one guy and stick with him. I can see him as a rival.

  4. Dayo Okeniyi.

    • Hmm, I can see the Brother. Its so funny he’s so tough in the Hunger games but he’s so adorable in photos!

    • I have no good reason for this it only a preference, but I would like an African-American. I know Black Panther has to be something like a “Captain American” for Wakanda so he should not sound like he is American but that is just what I would like. Ignore this post because anything(almost) you say to rebut I would have to agree with you.

    • Also too short

  5. The Need To Make Out A Movie Called Killer Instant And Put Michael Jai White As TJ Combo. but Before The Black Panther Should Definitely Be Michael jai White All Day. He Needs To Nee On More Fighting Movies.

    • Don’t forget Black Panther is more than a fight. He is a King! Also if you have read the comics he is one of the top five smartest people in the Marvel Universe.

  6. Has anyone checked out Rex baker who would make a great black panther , check him out on imdb Rextheflexbaker or on Facebook

    • rex baxter would not make a good black panther his jaw line and cheek bone stick out to much and there’s no way black panther can be that light

  7. Jalem white

    • I have to disagree.

    • On every forum like this I’ve had the same nomination: Michael J. White.

      1. Professional Martial Artist
      2. Spawn, 1997
      3. Mortal Combat internet miniseries gives him Marvel comic experience
      4. He can pull off the physique.

I’d love to see Djimon Hounsou play the older Uncle though who takes over the role of Black Panther until T’Challa reaches age.

      Any comments?

        • I feel like all u people forgot that it is IMPOSSIBLE for Whita & honsou to be father and son. While their both GREAT choices their also about the SAME age. So the only real way to do it is to have John boyega play T’challa & White or Honsou to be his father.

    • YYYYYYUUUUUUUPPP!!!, my dog i was just about to comment with that EXACT person but thankfully u made it easier… John boyega can & should DEFINITELT DO IT!!!!!. PS i love attack the block.

    • Vega my man what’s happening, I haven’t heard from you in a while bro, good to hear from you. I hope all is good with you and your family. You’ve always known me and you pretty much see eye to eye on this topic. Look I like Michael J. White overall, he seems like a really cool dude. But as you have said T’Challa is a role unlike say Luke Cage that requires complexity and strong on screen charisma. MJW just doesn’t fit the role because of that and obviously his age, I’m sorry but you can’t have no damn near 50 year old T’Challa/Black Panther, people need really need to get over that weird goofy s***. Like you said Boseman as T’Challa and Hounsou for T’Chaka would be great, if it we’re 15-20 years ago the role of Black Panther would be Hounsou’s without a doubt. As you already know I’m also good with Chiwetel Ejiofor for the role as well. And yes whoever plays Black Panther has to know how to act and have a strong onscreen presence, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect and that’s all they know, that’s why they aren’t cast directors because they would do a s***** job, they would have probably chose somebody like Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role of ‘Odin’ LMAO.

        • Vega I’m still around and kicking my friend, it’s been kinda boring with you around however. Take your time on that video and I look forward to seeing it after you complete it. The people that’s saying MJW are just caught up in his fighting skills, and he’s certainly a brother that kicks ass no doubt about it. But a role like T’Challa requires sophistication, complexity, leadership and true on screen presence. What do Sam L Jackson, Idris Elba, Terrence Howard, Don Cheedle and Anthony Mackie all have in common outside of starring in MCU films, they all are brothers who happen to be very talented actors with strong on screen presences. Like you said dudes like Boseman/Ejiofor/Oyellow/Hodge all bring that dynamic, plus just as important is they are YOUNG enough for the role and not too old. Man we’ve been saying this for what 2 years now and it’s absolutely amazing how it seems to go in one side of some people’s ear and out the other. LT for Black Panther haha and Rosey Grier for T’Chaka.

          • I agree to a point with you , marvel usually chooses an unknown actor for there new rolls
Which I think is a good idea , have you checked out a new up and coming actor called Rextheflexbaker , he’s a
New up and coming actor who fits the bill perfectly , check him out on imdb , Facebook and Twitter , he also
Has excellent martial art experience too .

        • Vega I meant it’s been kinda boring without you around bro, you know what I mean lol.

        • Aldis Hodge, I can see possibilities, but he will have to bulk up like Will Smith did for Ali.

      • The actor who gets the role for T’Challa/Black Panther will have to be more than just a physical presence who can play the role, he’ll have to actually be able to ACT and have a strong on screen presence about him. I don’t want to see an actor who’s going to look out of place alongside the likes of RDJ, Sam L, etc. I don’t just want any random black dude on the screen who can’t act, Mackie killed it as the ‘Falcon’ in ‘Winter Soldier’, why because the man can act, same goes for Cheedle, Elba and Hounsou, those brothers can act and all have strong on screen presences. That’s why I want to see actors like Boseman, Eijofor, Akinnabe, Oyelowo or Hodge, because they are all good to great actors with strong on screen presences.

  10. I would hope that Michael Jai White would play T’challa and Wesley Snipes plays his father who beat captain America in the past so T’challa resurfaces because Cap is back to help him fight a villian that is threatening Wakanda to steal the Vibranium… Maybe Baron Zemoand Hydra again… I could write this movie lol!!!!

    • Sigh, damn you dudes really don’t get it do you. Wesley is ONLY 5 Years older than White, how in the hell is that cat going to play his father man, and don’t give me no BS about make up and prosthetics either dog. It’s a good thing people like you don’t work for Marvel, we would have some B.S casting with horrible actors. Now Wesley as T’Chaka is not a bad idea, I’ve mentioned that before, but outside of that you go way off the tracks with your choices my man. AGIAN Marvel will not cast a dude nearly 50 years old for the role of T’Chaka, they’ve already said when they cast him he will be in late 20′s to mid 30′s at most, what part of that fails to resonates in you blind people’s heads, damn. With how you have the cast lined up, if you wrote the movie it would big time LMAO.

    • @ Daniel: I like that you love Black Panther but you clearly haven’t thought this through. First off as Supes has already mentioned, Snipes and MJW are to close any age to being playing a BELIEVABLE Father and Son Tandem. Also, they look nothing alike to pass as a believable father and son tandem. Wesley is dark skinned, so too should his son be, just sayin. Wesley could work as T’chaka however the man for the role of T’chaka is definitely Djimon for my money.

By way of plot, I am a bit confused, you say that T’challa resurfaces, why would T’challa resurface when he lives in Wakanda? Also the Wakandans wouldn’t have any problem taking down Baron Zemo by themselves. They have never been defeated in battle. The plot would have to be larger with more than one threat.

At some point I may need to re-post my outline. It might just be what the doctor ordered.

      • Amen, preach the gossip my man lol. It’s always refreshing to hear a voice of reason on this topic.

      • @vegabomber i wouldnt use the term resurfaces but he does go away from school but of course during that time the brother believes he will be the one to take ova the throne, but things changes when t challa comes back home..

        • sorry he goes away for school…

    • Let MJW go, its not going to happen. That Wesley Snipe idea…. Now that I can get behind.

      • @Damon – Spoken by a man with some common sense. Not only is that MJW fantasy of some people not happening, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel has already signed Chadwick Boseman for the role but they’re waiting until the San Diego Comic Con in July to announce it perhaps. Yes I would love for Wesley to get a role in Black Panther, he was shooting for so many years to get the role back in the 90′s before and during his stint as ‘Blade’. If it we’re 15-20 years ago Snipes, Djimon Hounsou, Denzel or Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje would have been great candidates for the role of T’Challa. But Snipes in the role of T’Chaka or somebody else would be fantastic.

        • Supes! Check me out on FB (search my name) and you can also find me on Twitter (search my name) and like it up and we can chop it up some more.

          • What’s going on Vega my man, I just messaged you Facebook a few minutes ago.

  11. there was at least 4 significant women to play roles in t challa life. his mother who dies giving birth to him, his stepmother who raises him,the love interest in Wakandan who in some comics says she becomes storm (xmen) and then there is his love interest (the singer). i would like to know you guys opinions on who could play these roles..

    • That’s a good question and there a lot of beautiful black actresses out there. But they’ll probably be looking at a 25-35 age range, that being said Meagan Good, Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Beharie and Tika Sumpter are some names that come off my head immediately as possible love interests for T’Challa. Taraji P. Henson, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Nia Long, Anika Noni Rose, Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington and Monica Calhoun are all very beautiful ladies and fine actresses, but might be considered a little too old for T’Challa’s love interests. I would love for Angela Bassett or Vivica A. Fox to play T’Challa’s step mom.

  12. It would be interesting to see who they use as TCHALLAS love interest. Since Marvel isn’t in charge of the X men rights they couldn’t use a storm storyline. Which would suck. So maybe Black Panther will be in his 30s when they do the movie not early 20s

    • @ sheila Lupita Nyong’o name has already been throw out there as a candidate to take ova as storm n the next x men film, so using her would be prefect just not developing the storm role in this film.

Scott Adkins for Batman reboot after Ben Afleck flop this year soon to be.

Also they need to fix Hawk Eye and Falcons Costumes.

I’m done thx :) Marvel rocks to end credit scenes Warner and DC need to adapt formula :)

    • @suneagle in the cartoon tony starks makes a better machine for falcon, so i will assume if falcon is featured in avengers 2 then he should be presented with the new machine.

  14. Michael Jai White is skilled and talented, but not the right Pick for this Role. Besides if they were going to Choose someone in their late 40′s for this role there’s no way they could overlook Djimon Hounsou. But I digress. There is a plethora of actors out there to choose from, and they’re going to have to hit the nail on the head. While I still feel Djimon would make a fine T’challa, i think he’s also make and outstanding T’chaka. Either way I can’t not see him, being the Black Panther in some form. Now other actors I can see for this role: Chiwetel Ejiofor and even Boseman too. there are a few others but my head it too sleepy to keep thinking 2night lol.

  15. Michael Jai White for Black Panther!

    • You should already know that’s not the direction Marvel is going, so you might as well turn to something else bro. I’m not sure who Marvel will end up picking for Black Panther, but it won’t be MJW, that I’m sure of.

  16. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje , is the best pick for this role or at least another important role in this movie.

Please Marvel don’t make this movie like a teenager movie, you did not make Bat man like that… it needs to be grand, powerful and raw,… Adewale is perfect for Black Panther!

    • I like Akinnuoye-Asbaje, I’ve been watching that brother in many roles through the years including “Oz”. That being said he’ll be 47 in August so I’m afraid he’s too old for the role of T’Challa, if this we’re 10-15 years ago he would be perfect. But like you’ve mentioned he would be great in another role in this film for sure. Oh and you won’t have to worry about some tweener playing Black Panther, Marvel won’t be going that damn young lol, probably late 20′s to mid 30′s which is why someone like Chadwick Boseman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Gbenga Akinnabe or David Oyelowo would be great fits for the role of Black Panther.

  17. I’d so much rather have a BP movie than a Dr Strange one… Just saying though I’m sure the DS movie will be good to

    • Yep, I’m skipping Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-man. I just going to let those past and just not going to hold it against Marvel.

  18. Shamier Anderson; the black sheriff’s deputy on Defiance! I believe he’d make a great BP!

  19. Black panther movie should focus on the following plot lines (not in order of importance):

    1) Explain why their are no black people/African nations on the world security counsel. They could show that Wakanda was approached or was a former member and walked away due to lack of trust issues (maybe they realized the Hydra inflitration).

    2) Introduce Wakada to the MCU. Explain why it is not on any world maps. How they are able to remain hidden etc. The Wakandans could be descendants of the ancient Eygptians who broke away before Egypt went into decline and took the building knowledge and superior math and science of Eygpt and developed it over time. The plot would involve a villian trying to get access to the Vibranium mound and force Wakanda into the public eye(Perhaps Hydra is trying to get some to make vibrainium based weapons).

    3) Establish the history between Captain America and Wakanda (he was sent on a secret mission and encountered T’challa’s father). Also include an ancient contact with alien invaders as was the case in the Avengers 2 animated movie. This would tie Wakanda to the wider Alien MCU and set up a sequel when Thanos or some other alien invader come for some Vibranium.

4)Have the black panther forced to seek assistance from some other MCU hero (i.e.,Captain America) or heroes (ie. Avengers) as a result of being pulled into the wider war for earth talking place in the MCU.

    5) Cast Lupita Nyongo as Shuri(Black Panther’s sister) and have her have to save her brother from some peril in the second act of the film. This would establish her character in the MCU and she could be Black Panther’s teamate when he needs her and they could play on their mutual distrust of all outsiders as the work to save the world in future installments of the franchise.

    6) Film should end with Wakanda establishing diplomatic ties with the rest of the world and becoming a member of the United Nations. Thus firmly becoming part of the MCU.

That’s all for now. I welcome any comments.

    • @Dejazmatch – You have some great ideas there man and you know what your talking about, I can definitely respect that. I would love to see Lutita Nyongo get the role of Shuri and if not her at least a role in the film.

    • @MovieJunkie – Numbers #5,#8,#20,#24 and #39 are the best choices on this list, especially #24, #8 and #5.

  20. Michel jai white would be perfect for this role of the black panther I he’ll make a perfect T`challa

  21. Nate Parker would be perfect

    • @yup – Nate Parker is not a bad choice and is probably one of the best 5 or 6 choices I can think of. The man can act and he’s also a realistic choice because the man fits the age realistic age range that’s required of the role, he’s not one of these 50 year old actors that some a-hem…. people keep foolishly throwing around on this site lol. For the people who are blind to this point let me repeat, whatever actor Marvel finally chooses for the role of T’Challa will be between his mid 20′s to mid 30′s and no older than that.

  22. Nate Parker is definitely a top 5 pick. There have been alot of actors mentioned in the 50′s range because most people are familiar with them and many could fit the role if their age wasn’t a particular problem. Djimon Housou could have immortalized this role 10 years ago but at the same time I’m glad that the film wasn’t made then. I don’t think Marvel would have known what to do with the script and I honestly feel it would have flopped. Today is the best day and age for this film, the conditions are so perfect and when Disney takes this film under it’s wing it’s going to flourish. I feel they have better heads on their casting shoulders and I do feel they will do a great job with casting. My Dream picks for the royal family would Be Chiwetel Ejiofor as T’challa, Djimon Hounsou as T’chaka and Lupita Nyong’o as Shuri. For N’yami I can see Angela Bassett or Leleti Khumahlo. I really hope that they can make N’yami impactful in someway even though she’s not in T’challa’s life.

    • @Angelique – Hello Angelique, how have you been, it’s always good to hear from you. You make so many good points that I agree with, eventhough Marvel has been talking about making a BLACK PANTHER film for about 20 years, I’m glad they didn’t try to make one in the past as well. Sometimes it’s just not the right time, now that the Marvel brand is so strong and people are clamoring for T’Challa to finally be brought on the big screen. All those choices you mentioned for roles in the film are great ones, Angela Bassett would be fantastic as N’yami. I’m sure if Lutita cwould be able to do it with her signing on to play in the new Star Wars movie, I guess it would depend on her schedule. Chiwetel is one of my top 2 choices for T’Challa and Hounsou would have definitely been a fantastic choice for T’Challa 10-15 years ago, I’ve said that many times myself. Hounsou as T’Chaka I’m all for, if not him Denzel can pull it off convincingly as well.

  23. Michael Jai White is the best pick!
