Free ‘Avengers’ DVD/Blu-ray For Those Who Pre-Ordered Delayed Collector’s Edition

9 months ago by Anthony Taormina

Given that Marvel’s The Avengers is the highest grossing film of the year (so far) it stands to reason that its release on DVD and Blu-Ray would be one of the most anticipated movie events of the remainder of the year. However, recent developments with The Avengers Collector’s Edition have deflated a lot of that enthusiasm.

We are, of course, referring to the recent delay of the 10-Disc Phase One Collector’s Set, which was to feature every Marvel Studios superhero solo film released thus far (from Iron Man all the way to Captain America) and The Avengers in a special edition case. The briefcase was meant to replicate the one used in Joss Whedon’s film (and briefly seen in the Thor post-credits scene), and would also include a replica of the Tesseract (Cosmic Cube).

Unfortunately, as we’ve already reported, that 10-disc set has run into a little legal hiccup – namely that Marvel did not acquire the proper license to replicate a famous brand of briefcases – and was delayed indefinitely. Fans that pre-ordered the set were left unsure of what was going to happen with their Collector’s Edition, but did have the option of cancelling and picking up the Two-Disc Avengers Blu-Ray Combo Pack instead.

However, for those who stuck to their guns and kept their pre-order, we have good news. According to Amazon, not only does Marvel plan to roll out a replacement for the 10-disc Collector’s Set they will also be providing free copies of the aforementioned Combo Pack as a goodwill gesture.

In an Email sent to pre-order holders, the online retailer revealed that a replacement option for the set is being worked out – one that presumably uses a different brand of briefcase – but that option won’t be available until the spring of 2013. It’s not the most ideal situation, as it still doesn’t deliver 10 discs worth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s a decent stopgap.

Pricing will be the same for the new collection, and it presumably will feature all of the same items (Tesseract, collectible cases for each film, special concept art) – except, in a different package.

Anyone who pre-ordered the Collector’s set between June 1, 2012 and August 28, 2012 is eligible for the “upgrade,” and should be provided with a code to redeem their Two-Disc Combo Pack if they haven’t already. However, the codes must be redeemed before October 15th, so act fast.

Cancelling is still an option, Amazon reveals, for anyone that wants to see how the new packaging looks before forking over $140. So as soon as Marvel does reveal images of the new 10-disc set, we’ll be sure to update fans with a fresh post.

Marvel’s The Avengers is out on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 25, 2012.

For my part, I’ll survive. I just received my HP Collector’s Edition, so I’m satisfied for my ridiculously huge collector’s, feature-packed video set fix. I’m looking forward to seeing what is offered for the Dark Knight trilogy. For “The Avengers”, I’ll be fine with the combo pack.

I wonder if a lot of people are going to fawn over Marvel’s generosity even though this offer is actually the LEAST they should be giving fans, since Marvel/Disney is the one that screwed up in the first place…?

Marvel/Disney didn’t screw up, it wasn’t there fault just to say. The manufacturers of the suitcase gives them a license to use their brand in the film for promotion purposes. But doesn’t want them to use for marking purposes which makes the least bit of sense. To my point the manufacturers are a bunch of idiots who should have thought of the outcome of the deal if they were using promotion values towards a major blockbuster film, marketing values is always needed. Marvel/Disney is the one that got screwed over by them in the end over a lawsuit on the outcome of the manufacturers not thinking correctly. And I’m sure they are losing a lot of business alright for that idiotic move.

This message is posted on the order page now:

The “Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One-Avengers Assembled Collection” will not be released by Marvel as originally expected. We know this delay is disappointing, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes. Marvel is planning to offer a similar collection in new packaging. The new collection will include the original titles offered with the first version of the item, and we expect it will be available in the spring of 2013. Additional information will be available on our website and via email when available.

Not sure if this is the same collection but it is where the link above takes you.

Is this only for Amazon pre-orders in the US? I preordered mine from Best Buy in Canada. I want a freebie too!
