Thor not only kicks off the summer movie season of 2011, but it sets in motion the events that will culminate in the Marvel superhero team-up epic, The Avengers, the following year. With story elements of Thor taking place in New Mexico, and the production actually shooting in Santa Fe and Galisteo, it’s no surprise to see Marvel Studios returning to the mountainous state once again for their biggest project ever.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Marvel Studios officially announced the agreement today, making The Avengers the single largest film production in the state’s history. The current schedule has Joss Whedon’s The Avengers shooting in New Mexico between April and September of next year, using both Albuquerque Studios and of course, the beautiful and vast surrounding locations that so many other major Hollywood films have used in the past.

The Avengers also is set to shoot scenes in Michigan and New York but production will primarily take place in New Mexico’s largest city Albuquerque. Having been there myself earlier this year on the set of Cowboys & Aliens, there are not many areas in the U.S. that offer such a wide variety of natural and vast scenery to take advantage of for on-location shooting.

Governor Richardson highlights some of the local economic benefits to New Mexico:

“In addition to being our biggest production to date, The Avengers will be the most technologically advanced and will provide cutting-edge training opportunities for our crew… I’m announcing this as a Christmas present of sorts to the people of New Mexico. This is a perfect example of the incredible job creation, economic impact and global visibility this industry has brought our state over the past eight years, and of the need to keep it moving forward.”

If you live in the area, you may get a chance to see your favorite Marvel heroes played by played by Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson in costume fighting Loki, the Skrulls or whatever villains play a part in the first Avengers installment.

Be sure to read up on the latest Marvel movie updates!

Thor opens May 5, 2011; The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Not bad at all.

  2. really cool

  3. Wasn’t the big battle in “The Ultimate Avengers” animated movie in a desert too?

    • No. It was on the Triskelion Island. And in the second film, it was in Wakanda.

  4. I’m not quite certain -been a while..but wasn’t Hulk’s origin in New Mexico as well? Are we leaning towards Hulk as ultimate villain?

    • Since they follow the story of The Incredible Hulk (the Norton movie), Hulk´s origin was in his lab in California.

      • Wait in California? I tought it was somewhere up in the New England states, that was why they went to New York to fight(since everyone must fight in New York).

        • As far as I know, it was the University Of Berkeley, California. But I could be wrong… You confused me…

          • Berkley was used in the Eric Bana “hulk” movie. The Norton movie used Culver U. in Virginia as Banners home base.

  5. I think the Avengers might be like the Hulk vs. Thor short. Loki gets control over the Hulk and Thor saves the day only this time the Avengers save the day. Also I might move to New Mexico now.

    • This was actually how the Avengers first got together back in the very first issue of the avengers ever. Wouldnt mind seeing them keep loyal to that.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a big part of the first Avengers but I also think the Skrulls or their Ultimate Universe counterpart are a part of it as well, leading into the Avengers sequels and that “big event” in 2017 that was hinted at previously.

  6. I mean hey, awesome for New Mexico, and I do get that as the first movie, its going to be an origin story for the team, but last time I checked, avengers mansion was about as far from Albuquerque as one typically can get. But ya know what? Who cares. Joss is awesome and if this is his move, then I dig it.

    • lol, I doubt the mansion/HQ exteriors will be done in New Mexico… they’re shooting in New York/Michigan as well, remember

      • And who said they will use the Avengers Mansions? Maybe they´ll go the “Ultimate” route (Sam Jackson´s Nick Fury) and base their headquarter on an artificial island, like the Triskelion.

        • Theres no telling where the Avengers home base will be. Remember, Tony Starks home is in Malibu, CA.

      • ok, so i think i mentioned this in one of your articles a long time ago but i feel compelled to mention it again…
remember when everyone was saying that thor was mysteriosly chucking lightning bolts at the hulk? so whether that’s true or not, they could still use it.
let’s say that loki was really doing it, continues to screw with betty and then convinces hulk that it was thor, hence confrontation.

        puny humans…

        • I don´t think that was a Thor reference, Hulk was just mad at the weather. And I don´t think they´ll pick that up…

  7. I live in Albuquerque, NM! Very exciting. I’ll have to keep an eye out to see if they have any need for extras. Very cool.

  8. I could have sworn that I read somewhere that Loki and Hulk would be the villains of this movie.

  9. dam wish i lived there lol

  10. new mexico??? I guess a lot of these new avengers are all from the other side of the border, and they snaked they’re way into our Great Country, now I definitly won’t go see avengers. Why would they want to film in new mexico in the first place? all films should be made in the greatest city and state in the world, New York! avengers and fantastic four headquarters should all be based in New York, not some 5th rate state, that have more illegal Aliens than legal blue blooded Americans in it. Well, this makes it easy for me, not that I ever view movies at movie theaters anymore, I just wait until they come out on DVD (can’t stand all the snotnoses with their cell phones and their immaturity. You tell them to shut up, and they give lip back. If their phones didn’t have cameras, I’d just smash their faces in, period. But, If I do, they’ll go crying home to their mommies with pictures of me beating the snot out of them, so, I stay home to watch my movies. But, all the new movies nowadays are about comicbook characters, what? Hollywood forgot how to make a real ORIGINAL movies anymore???? They have to reboot, retell, or let’s be real, Stealing the Legends of filmmaking masterpieces, and ruining them. That’s all this new generation of young movie makers know how to do, bastardize & butcher other’s work, because they’re too stupid to come up with something on their own. I guess this is why they make these new films out where nobody is around to witness this garbage being made. And, to make a, what is sure to be, huge budget film anywhere other than New York tells me, they haven’t a clue how to make a real A-1 Masterpiece, they’re rather make this tripe that should go Straight to DVD release, where it belongs.
