10 Actors Marvel Should Consider For ‘Ant-Man’

by Rob Keyes
(11 of 10)

Who Should Play Ant-Man?

Barely a day after officially announcing plans to host an Iron Man 3 panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012, Marvel Studios had what are likely meant to be surprise announcements leak out as if the floodgates had opened. Yesterday came confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy is the next film on their slate to release in the summer of 2014, and after analyzing rumors that Ant-Man could appear in Iron Man 3, it was also confirmed that director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim) just completed a week of shooting test footage for Ant-Man.

So, with an Ant-Man's script by Wright and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) done, test footage shot, and an official announcement imminent (potentially putting to rest years of rumors), let's examine 10 potential stars Marvel could sign (or have signed already) to play Henry Pym, aka Ant-Man.

    Eva Longoria and Benedict Cumberbatch

Just because two people took a tour of Marvel HQ and left with some comic books doesn’t mean they’re right to play superheroes.
IMO they aren’t the worst choices, but Longoria and Cumberbatch are pretty low on the list for BEST choices.

I dind’t have that in mind when I made my choices. Marvel needs mix in some diversity and when I first read the The Ulimates, Wasp looked like she modeled after Eva Longoria. Plus, Eva is hot and funny and Benedict is brillant as Sherlock. They look like a couple.

Lee Pace, my second choice from from the list, could also play Hank.

The Ultimates?? Please, no… we want the REAL Hank Pym, not that jack@$$ from the Ultimates who in no way resemble the Pym we ant-fans love… I sure hope they don’t go that way in the movies, or I’ll be really pissed.

I honestly don’t see an Antman solo film coming to be. A movie would probably be a box office disaster for the fact that he just doesn’t have the fan base or popularity to hold his own. For profit sake it would be best to have him involved with another big film like Iron Man 3 or Captain America 2. But, if it is coming I think Adrien Brody could fill the shoes just fine.

What they should be focusing on is getting Sony to partner with them so they can use Spiderman for Avengers 2, then convincing Fox to partner so they can borrow Wolverine for a brief end credit cameo that would lead to Avengers 3 or an Ultimate Alliance type film. Then finally we will see the Titanic get de-throned as it should have been years ago.

I like the Ultimate Alliance idea.

Agreed…even for other second-tier superheroes like Thor it always seemed plausible because studios could sell the concept to moviegoers. But I just cannot for the life of me see how ‘Man who can change sizes’ would translate into a marketing pitch.

Maybe if they made the focus of the movie something else, but just with a man who can change sizes…

But I think putting Hawkeye in other movies and introducing the character first made sense, and I think that’s what they should do with this too.

So you really want Fox’s screwed up X-Men continuity to be involved/part of Marvel’s MCU?
      Huh.

@ Dr. Gibson….you speak as if Marvel Studios is somehow desperate and needs those non-Marvel characters to succeed. Well if anything The Avengers proved they don’t and are just fine, better than fine I would say. If anything Sony and Fox should be looking to convince Marvel to let their versions back into the fold to lend them some credibility. But why on Earth would Marvel want to help studios which own characters they want BACK??! The logic just isn’t there.

Plus Spider-man and Wolverine were not core members of the Avengers and, truth be told, Marvel has more potential candidates (they actually control) at their disposal and follow the Avengers chronology (like Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Vision).

I think Adrien Brody should play Hank Pym/ Antman and Ashley Scott play Wasp. I think that would be an awesome combination.

Patrick Wilson for Hank Pym.I know he has already been in Watchmen, but his ability to play the arrogant yet passionate scientist type in A Gifted Man. He also is a lower rung star, and is need of another role.

I would be alright with a few of these choices. Marvel may not going for record numbers if they do an Antman movie. Just may go with it so it can be an integral to help tie-in with the Avengers 2 story. Given the right people Antman can be a good movie. Anything is possible. Who all thought the new Arrow series was going to suck before anything was seen of it? First trailer proved a lot of people wrong. Give Antman a chance.

I never would have considered Alan Tudyk, but he’s my favorite choice. I could see Simon Pegg also. I think I’d rather not see a “leading man” type in the role.

I’m not the only one to say it, but Marvel is going to make the movies it needs to make in order to build phase II. If they think an Ant-Man movie is more important than Black Panther or Dr. Strange, they’ll do it and sell it the best they can. It doesn’t have to do with how much we, or they like a character, it’s what portion of the overall story the character can carry. We can all see ways Black Panther or Dr. Strange could bring out Marvel characters and ideas, but Marvel might think differently.

Hope they don’t do a solo film, and instead do a short a la pixar and conclude it maybe with the extra clip after the credits.

I cant for the life of me see why they would do an Ant Man movie over Black Panther or Dr. Strange…who are infinitely better characters with Far better comic to movie translation possibilities…besides a Black Panther movie could open for another Avengers movie with the villian being Thanos and or Ultron. A Dr. Strange movie would be amazing also.

You do realize you kind of just answered your own question, right?

“could open for another Avengers movie with the villian being Thanos and or Ultron”

Many of us are hoping they will use Ultron in Avengers 2 BUT to do that [correctly] you need Hank Pym (aka Ant-Man) who created the Ultron robots. Not to mention he was a founding member and kind of deserves to be there.

So there is your reason. Sure they could just lump Ultron’s creation onto Stark but the last thing IM needs is ANOTHER villain hell bent on his destruction. The bad guys need to be spread around a bit.

Jensen Ackles while I think he is awesome I personally cannot see him as Ant-Man at all. Adrian Brody, Alan Tudyk (got superfanboy giddy when I saw his name, Benedict Cumberbacth (know I butchered his last name), Joel from the killing, Bradley Cooper would be especially awesome because in Limitless he played a super smart guy so it would be easier for him to sink into the role.

Has no one consider the actor Armie Hammer, the man who is bringing life to The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp by his side. This guy hit it huge with kind of a small part in The Social Network, and appeared along side DiCaprio in J.Edgar, which won him the part of The Lone Ranger. And please lets not forget, this man was cast by DC/WB to play Batman in their failed JLA movie. So unless he plans to be the next Batman, I think he would be great as Ant-Man. He’s becoming a huge star, and is still young, and could draw in a audience of young teenagers to don’t know who Ant-Man is but what to see the actor.
And I read a post on ComicBookMovie.com someone suggested Ashley Green to play Wasp! And I swear she never occur to me, and if you look at her with the short hair from the Twilight movies, it’s uncanny how much she looks like Wasp. She is also a young and up and coming actress to can do multiple movies, and draw in a younger crowd who don’t know Ant-Man, but loved her the Twilight films and want to see more of her.
I think that’s a key element to some of these third or second tier characters for Marvel, is to have big name stars fill these roles so they can bring more of a different demographic to these movies, mostly populated by males ages 13to40 lol It worked with Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. was storming a comeback in Hollywood and won the part of Iron Man just has he was becoming a bankable star. So it only makes since to do the same with other characters who might think couldn’t sell to the general public. THOR having Chris Hemsworth who was relativity unknow at the time, did start gaining buzz in 09 from his epic 10 min performance in Star Trek, and a lead role the Red Dawn remake which was suppose to be released before THOR to make Chris Hemsworth much more reconizable to the general public was pushed back, but the end results paid off. And of course Chris Evans having already made a name for hisself not only has a previous Marvel superhero from the movie Fantastic Four, but has proven to be a great actor and someone who can bring in a crowd of younger viewers.

I would actually rather see Ant-Man partnered with The Avengers (an intro in Iron man 3 would be OK, and make sense since it deals with a science/tech threat), than in his own solo movie. he was always pretty much a member of the team rather than a solo hero in the early comics. Having said that, I will say Hank Pym impresses me more as Goliath (blue/yellow cool costume in early comics) than as Ant-man or Yellowjacket. We do need him in The Avengers, tho (along with Wasp, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch). I am not sure who would play him, but we need someone a little more rugged who won’t look scrawny or simpy when he turns into Giant-man or Goliath. We don’t need any trendy “what’s happening dudes” guys or unshaven bums, either. Of your list of suggestions, based on looks only, about the only one who comes close to fitting the bill is possibly Josh Holloway. As for my choice? I don’t know, just grasping at straws wildly without putting a great deal of thought into it…Mark Valley?!

Uh, skinny, linky, long faced and long nosed Adrien Brody for Ant-Man?! He looks absolutely nothing like Hank Pym and that’s all I want to see not O’brady or Lang.

    Reply
    • Mary Jay    11 months ago

I agree completely with you. In the comics, Pym has always been shown well-built, tall with blond hair and blue eyes (sort of his trademark in a way, if you remember when he first turned into Yellojacket, the eyes sorta gave him away). Adrian Brody looks nothing like the part.

I still say Joel Edgerton, he fits the part, looks clever and could look just “nerdy” enough. Another good idea I heard was Simon Baker. Unfortunately, while he’s not that older than Joel, he looks a bit too old for my taste. But he would make a great Hank Pym. I know a lot of people suggested Nathan Fillion but I just don’t see it at all. I’ve always seen him play witty and wisea$$ characters, taking nothing seriously. I can’t see him playing a serious genius scientist. At all.

Tudyk – can NOT get enough of him! I would approve his casting!

BenCum – otoh, I like him, but throwing “Latest Hot New Thing” in EVERY role that comes along = early burnout. that said, Maybe Peter Wisdom or even Namor…?

Joel – I’ve been waiting for him to hit it big since EpII.

Pace – interesting, but I don’t feel it clicking with him. someone else, perhaps?

Pegg – I would rather see him played against type as Egghead or head of AIM rather than a hero, honestly.

Jensen – Ant-Man? not feeling it. Strange? DEFINITELY NOT feeling it.

You know who I’d LIKE to see? True Blood’s TODD LOWE as Eric “THUNDERSTRIKE” Masterson in THOR.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect choice. He has the right acting chops, physically he’s great, he’s very versatile. He so perfect for it that they are bound to screw up and give it to some pal of Edgar Wright. Simon Pegg in Star Trek is terrible. He’s the only one in the film who over acts.

SImon pegg terrible in star trek? he was fantastic and stole the last half of the movie in every scene he was in. He was basically the only comedy the movie had. besides a couple remarks from chris pine. Not to mention pegg is even better in hot fuzz and shaun of the dead.

I think everyone knows ant-man wont be a financial sucess much like all of edgar wright movies. But all of edgar wright movies are fantastic. Some of the most underrated films by the public cause they are so unkown to people. (of course everyone on this site can probobly name them) Id say benedict cumberbatch is the right choice. This movie will probobly be heavy on comedy and he showed in sherlock that he can do that while being very smart. He just needs to bulk up he is pretty tiny. I also think armie hammer would be pretty great.
