Marvel Anime: Iron Man & Wolverine Teaser Trailers

Iron Man Wolverine Marvel Anime

About a year ago we told you that Marvel was extending its brand name to the Far East, partnering with Japanimation studio Madhouse to produce four anime films to be released in 2010. At the time there was no official word on which Marvel characters would be getting the ‘animakeover,’ though Iron Man, Spider-Man and The Hulk were early guesstimates.

Well, flash-forward a year later and we finally have a first look at two out of the four Marvel/Madhouse films on the way. The first characters to receive their animakeover? (Surprise, surprise) It’s Wolverine and Iron Man. Check out the teaser trailers:

Anime is an art form that has a tendency to split people right down the middle: you either love it or hate it. Personally, I used to be an anime fanatic back in high school (over a decade ago, yikes!) but have found it increasingly difficult to appreciate the genre in my older years. Too much ‘style over substance’ too often for my liking.

However, I find myself facing a split decision in regards to these trailers: I like the Iron Man one but don’t like the Wolverine one. At least the Iron Man movie still retains the feel of the Iron Man we know and love (if not slightly altered) – that Wolverine flick is something I would never recognize if I didn’t already know what it was.

But then, Marvel International President Simon Phillips stated last year that these new anime films would “create a parallel universe for Marvel.” That anime Wolverine definitley looks like he’s from another universe.

The four Marvel/Madhouse anime films will each be written by Warren Ellis, writer of renowned comic book series Transmetropolitan and The Authority.

Both the Iron Man and Wolverine animes are due out in 2010. We’ll have a look at the final two Marvel anime films whenever the trailers drop.

What do you think: Is anime a good look for the Marvel Universe?

  1. Put me in the category of those who love it, and the reaser for Iron Man looks awesome.

  2. i am split about Animie as well…

I saw this Trailer on Gametrailers.com the day they were released (sometime during Comic Con.)

I thought the Wolverine one did not retain that Wolvarine “feel”

the Iron Man Trailer did retain the “feel” of the Character…

  3. *LAUGHS* Hell, why not??? :) You know, who cares if the “Wolverine” anime trailer doesn’t look or feel like the Marvel property? “Wolverine: Origins” sucked hard, so why not let Madhouse take a stab at breathing some life into the character? I mean, take a look at their catalog: “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust”, “Wicked City”, “Metropolis”, “Tokyo Godfathers”, “Death Note”, segments in “Batman: Gotham Knight”, “Paprika”, etc. etc. etc. Why not?

  4. Although I really hate anime, I like the Iron Man Trailer and actually think I will sit through it, but as for the Wolverine one. When did Wolverine ever have a Mullet.

Also, I get it that Anime is a Japanese thing, but when was Wolverine ever Asian. Let alone, Im sure when we see Tony Stark in the Iron Man anime, I can almost bet he is Asian also.

Is FOX behind this just to mess up some of these characters just because they are FOX?

  5. Im a fan of anime, just not all of it because not all it is good. I’ll watch the wolverine one, but he looks like some lame ass street trash in a long coat. That’s more my problem with the wolverine trailer than anything else.

    @hamlet3k

The same thing is being said by other people “who cares about mad house’s films that they have produced, etc, etc, etc. Why can’t they at least keep the look some what recognizable of Wolverine, regardless of the parallel universe cop out.

  6. Thumbs up for the iron man one, thumbs down for the desecration of my favorite character in wolverine.

  7. I for one am NOT a fan of Anime, I don’t watch it and then Iout of curiousity I checked out the trailer for Wolverine Anime, and I must say…THAT was NOT Wolverine, period, I’ll stick with regulation Marvel Wolverine thanks.

  8. @ Drew

This is Marvel’s decision. Fox cannot be blamed for this. Yet.

  9. Wolverine looks more like Vega from Street Fighter. I wouldn’t watch it cause it would bug me the whole time I watched it.

  10. I do like anime, and I’m with most of you that the Iron Man trailer looks good but Wolverine could use some work. The first thing I thought was “Wolvie is thin? Couldn’t they have given him some muscles?”. I may watch it but I doubt if I’ll like it.

  11. I’m with you KJahless,

I like animé a lot. THe Ironman looks great, Wolverine … I’ll watch it but …

  12. I for one will watch the Wolverine bit because almost no one goes into his time in Japan. Wolverine vs. Ninjas and Asian mythos creatures isn’t new folks. The look is though… man that’s not like any redition of the character I’ve ever seen. Cool how the claws flex on his hands though. Wish they didn’t have the hair though… /sigh.

The Iron Man thing… Am I the only one that got Asian French People out of that? On the plus side it looks like the CGI is blended well with the hand-drawn, one of my pet peeves. I just love it when you can see CGI sort-of pasted on top of the hand drawn art… soooo classy. /sarc

  13. Guh. Loved them both, though I think “style over substance” is what they’ll go with when it comes to Wolverine. Still, SWEET.

  14. im excited for both… any guesses as to what the other 2 movies will be?

spiderman no doubt…. and Punisher perhaps?

  15. Iron Man looks good, Wolverine doesn’t

  16. Actually, Wolverine looks more like his son Daken from the comics in that trailer, who IS from Japan. They should say it’s Dark Wolverine instead. XD

But I’m with you guys, Iron Man looks better for the traditional feel.

  17. The Wolverine one simply put is terrible. Iron Man looks ok in his armor suit, but I don’t have any hope that it will turn out good.

  18. Wolverine or not….. it looks terrible

  19. I for one am ALL for artistic liberties being taken with existing characters/ subjects, particularly as I am one such artist who does that often myself with my drawings, but I have to say that I agree with a lot of what has been said already. I am a huge fan of anime myself,as well as Marvel comics (in general), so when I heard about then saw these two trailers, I was needless to say STOKED! After seeing them, however, I must say that I’m a lot more optomistic about Iron Man than Wolverine, only because we all are so used to seeing him alot differently than how he’s being portrayed here, and honestly, it’s going to take some getting used to ( the thin frame, long fingernails, and super mullet LOL!!!). Having said that though, I’ll reserve judgement untill I see them for myself (the finished features). Hopefully, we’ll all be pleasantly surprised….. or we may end up being woefully dissapointed depending on the way these things can go.

  20. Look incredibly stupid in my opinion…

  21. I don’t like how Wolverine looks, but I like how Ironman looks =D

  22. the Iron man clip looked great , the Wolverine clip, well what can i say that hasn’t already been said, except that he looked to much like something out of Seattle circa 1999 (grunge)

  23. ironman vs captain harlock? anybody old enough to get that? Anyways, big fan of anime, but these just look horrible. However the Batman anime had good and bad points, will these be like that and be a bunch of shorts combined into 1 film? Then it might be worth watching. NOTHING about that second film is Wolverine……..

  24. the Wolverine clip looked like CRAP

  25. I have to admit, when I first watched both trailers of Iron Man and Wolverine, I completely flipped out with excitement. It looks so epically awesome!

However, when I looked at the Wolverine trailer again, he does look off, but I still like the fact Marvel is takin’ these great superheroes into anime. :]

Can’t wait to see ‘em both! ^^

  26. anime is the highest form in animation. so much detail is involved. a prime example is the way the scenes are crafted with movie like camera angles. when you compare the visuals{basically how everything is drawn) of animated features like ironman and the avengers movies with the anime versions of these heroes, there’s no contest. the japanese take their animation seriously. When it comes to us americans we cut corners and produce crap the next avengers movie. Does anyone remember hammerman? we used to take it seriously when the thundercats and silverhawks were around. the only thing we take seriously is the brilliant pixar stuff. there are plenty of highly stylized anime flicks and series that are loaded with substance. you just have to know how to seperate the cool from the uncool. i also get annoyed when people talk about something being too highly stylized. live action flicks and animation are visual medium so if something is highly stylized it just adds to the coolness factor. you geeks need to get a life and some p#@$%!!!!!

  27. wolverine looks rediculous. I don’t have a problem with anime, (dragonball/z/gt is one of my favorite shows of all time) but I’m starting to get really sick and tired of everything being turned into anime or being given an anime look. I thought the Batman anime was terrible and I’m not even going to bother with these ones.

  28. Yah paris, it’s not like the japs cut corners with every scene where a character is “moving fast” they remain still while the bacground is just a bunch of lines in the general color scheme of whatever the background is, lol.

Anime has become FAR too formulaic. You can almost predict how the characters will look and act in every anime because they already have one preconceived standard of what is cool, and they basically apply it to all of their movies now.

Girls with revealing clothing or school girl outfits, guys with long straight gray, white, or whatever color hair. The John Woo signature sunglasses and trenchcoat (yes I know John Woo is Chinese not Japanese, but that’s what they’ve adopted as cool), anything rocket or jet propelled has to fly in crazy loops before straightening out, the “camera” during action scenes have to be in constant motion, etc. etc. etc. *yawn*

  29. oh really ken j? so Samurai 7 is the same as Elfen Leid. Basilisk is the same as Fullmetal panic? Fullmetal Alchemist is the same as Black Lagoon? Gunslinger Girl is the same as Burst Angel? Deathnote is the same as Coyote Ragtime Show? Please lamo know your stuff before you talk about it! What I just named were anime series. As for colored hair; that’s part of anime; just like red ,blue yellow spandex is part of the comic book hero world. both Karas movies have none of what you talk about. Nor do Any of the Dragon Ball Z movies. Nor does Vampire Hunter D blood Lust< and the list can go on.
