Mark Strong as Green Lantern’s Sinestro?

MTV spoke with Green Lantern director Martin Campbell at the red carpet premiere of Edge of Darkness where he openly shot down the rumor that Jackie Earle Haley would be playing Sinestro, the nemesis of Ryan Reynolds’ title character.

Not only did Campbell respond by outright denying the Haley rumor adamantly but he revealed that they are currently in talks with one of Hollywood’s latest go-to guys, Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass).

This would mark yet another villainous role for the British-born actor who has had an insane amount of solid roles in big feature films as of late. Here’s what Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Beyond Borders) said in response to the Sinestro rumors:

“No, that’s completely wrong… In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro.”

“He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro… If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life.”

Talk about being open and honest, eh. I love it. That’s not all though; Campbell continued on to confirm that other characters that will appear in Green Lantern:

“Well, Kilowog will be… Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it’s a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right.”

If you’re wondering who he’s referring to, Kilowog, Tomar-Re and Abin Sur are other members of the Green Lantern corps. If you don’t know what they look like, you’re in for a treat. As a hint of what’s to come from this movie, imagine for a second the cartoon character on the right in the picture below is Ryan Reynolds…

green lantern movie kilowag confirmed Mark Strong as Green Lanterns Sinestro?

Kilowog is the dude on the left…

Mark Strong is a fantastic actor who’s clearly high in-demand. Just check out his IMDB page so you can wonder how he’s able to do all of that work. With Sinestro, Dr. Hector Hammond and the aforementioned characters all in the movie, we wonder which villains will take the most screen time and which are being set up for future use.

It’s been a busy week for the DC camp as they signed young actress Blake Lively to play Green Lantern’s leading lady Carol Ferris and more recently, Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond, another villain of the Green Lantern story. It certainly looks like Hal Jordan will have plenty of foes to deal with or at least, the introduction of plenty of foes who he’ll cross paths with in the franchise.

What do you think of Mark Strong playing Sinestro?

Director Martin Campbell and his award-winning crew get to work in March on Green Lantern and is scheduled to open June 17, 2011.

  1. i think mark strong is awesome for this role:) great actor and a looks pretty much like sinestro. could play out very well!:D

  2. Poor guy is getting typecast as a villain.

  3. Thomas Gibson (Aaron Hotchner on “Criminal Minds,” used to be half of Dharma & Greg) is a far better choice. Also, Shemar Moore for the Jon Stewart role when it comes up.

  4. WHO?

  5. They should cast Patrick Wilson (Lakeview Terrace) for this role.Put him the gym before the shoot.

  6. I meant Patrick Wilson for the lead part of Green Lantern..

  7. Okay, great point about Ryan Reynolds' first reaction to Kilowog. Yes, that will be a guaranteed moment for laughs.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit to some trepidation about this film. I'm glad to see Campbell is taking it seriously and recognizes the challenge of bringing this story to film. It's that complex history to Green Lantern that makes me concerned the film could just tank. I think of all the recent comic book characters to get this blockbuster, big screen kind of treatment, this is the one that creates one of the greatest challenges. Even X-Men was able to make itself very “real world,” but so much of what goes on in Green Lantern just can't be brought down to earth very easily. I hope Campbell can pull it off.

  8. Is Sinestro even gonna be the villian? lol

How many times has it gone from Jackie Earle Haley to someone else back to him? haha

  9. I think that Strong will do a GREAT job as Sinestro. This is gonna be a KICK-ASS movie!

  13. There really isn't a big challenge here. It should be easy. Rule one don't deviate from the story. Rule two get the actors to understand the characters they portray and understand the story. Tim Robbins shouldn't be in it. Angela Bassett is an awesome actress she should do good as Amanda Waller, even though I can't understand why Waller would be in the movie. And will the Gaurdians have an appearance in the film since they are the keepers of the ring power.
