Mark Strong Confirmed as Green Lantern’s Sinestro

A while back we saw a surge of casting news for the one DC film project we at least can confirm is happening, Green Lantern. Joining Ryan Reynolds who is starring as the title character would be Blake Lively as his love interest, Peter Sarsgaard as the villain Dr. Hector Hammond, and Tim Robbins as the villain’s father, Senator Hammond.

It was also revealed by director Martin Campbell that Mark Strong was in talks to play Sinestro, who Green Lantern fans know as the main villain of the series. In this movie, it seems he my not be the villain just yet, and instead will play a mentoring role for the main character, to be set up as the key villain in the sequel(s).

Comic Book, TV and even video game writer Geoff Johns of DC Comics was recently bumped up to Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment. He tweeted today what we can look at as confirmation that Mark Strong is on board as Sinestro. Here’s what he said:

“Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro.”

Kilowog, the Guardians, Oa…all breathtaking. The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!”

There you have it, Mark Strong will be in Green Lantern and I’m excited to see him as a mentor of sorts for Ryan Reynolds’ character.

  4. Green Lantern” itself will follow Hal Jordan, an ordinary man who was chosen by a dying alien named Abin Sur to receive a green energy-powered ring used for protecting the planet. Ryan Reynolds has been tapped to play the titular character in the movie, which is expected to start production soon for June 17, 2011 release in the U.S.

  5. A-ha!! Mark Strong? He was awesome in “Sherlock Holmes”! That's where I've seen him recently… This is good news

  6. Funny,I was just wondering about this last night.
    Good to hear .
I am sure he will do a fine job.

  7. Mark String is an incredible actor and I know will do this role the justice it deserves.

I predict Mark Strong will be the Jack Nicholson if his generation. Not that IU woudl want to sterotype any actor, Mark is great as the brilliant bad guy. He was great in Sherlock Holmes and has been excellent in many other smaller roles. If they do make Sinestro as mainly a mentor only character in the first GL film I look forward to the sequel where Strong will be allowe to open up the character and get a lot more screen time.

I find it interesting that the plans are to break from tradition and go with Hammond as the main bad guy. I believe this will work well for GL just as a similiar pattern worked well for Iron Man. While the Iron Man movie did feature a known villian it was not the primary Villian most often used for a first story for Iron Man.

This will also allow for developing the relationship between Hal Jordon and SInestro, showing a backstory instead of implying it in flashbacks or something similiar or even just simply rushing it. The good GL & Sinestro orgin story allows for these 2 to meet, get along as a menotr & student like relationship and then tear apart as Sinestro falls into obsession & madness in a quest for control of all in the name of Justice.
