Mark Ruffalo Talks ‘Avengers 2′ Script & Environmental Standalone Hulk Idea

Published 1 year ago by , Updated January 20th, 2014 at 5:08 am,

All of the Marvel Studios productions up to and including The Avengers can be grouped together and dubbed the introductory phase. Phase 2 sends the heroes we met on new adventures as established, more confident and experienced characters before they come back together in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. After that it’s still a mystery but all signs point to Phase 3 (beginning with Ant-Man in July 2015) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe introducing quite a few new heroes, leading to an inevitable rotation of The Avengers roster.

There have been rumors ever since The Avengers broke box office records around the world that the popularity of Ruffalo’s character – both as Bruce Banner and in performing the motion capture for the Hulk – could lead to the character getting another solo feature. Ang Lee’s Hulk and Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk didn’t make the needed money to justify a followup on Marvel’s two-films-per-year schedule, leading us to believe the Hulk may be better served as a supporting character or partner in a team-up, but Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige did tease his interest in the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk stories from the comics and Ruffalo has some ideas of his own.

While appearing at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend for Infinitely Polar Bear, Mark Ruffalo spoke on a topic very close to him – protecting and maintaining the environment. He explained that artists like him who can reach large audiences have a responsibility to share the positives of science in that respect, without being extreme. During the Q&A he was asked about how he’d like to do that with large blockbusters like his role as Hulk in The Avengers.

“I think that’s the way to go, and it’s a trend that’ll start to develop. As a culture, when we latch onto a fad, we’re actually working something out in the creative subconscious. The fact that all these doomsday and end-of-times movies are coming out is because we’re actually working that out in the culture.”

“I’m in The Avengers, but if you took my screen time it would come to about ten minutes, along with the 12 other people I’m sharing the screen with, so my input’s kind of limited on that. But if we get to a standalone Hulk movie, I’ll have a much better chance to do that. I’m just learning now how to find my voice and bring it into the studio world.”

Hulk in The Avengers Mark Ruffalo Talks Avengers 2 Script & Environmental Standalone Hulk Idea

Ruffalo did sign a multi-picture deal with Marvel that lets the studio call upon him for another four appearances after The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whether or not a Hulk standalone picture is in the cards we don’t yet know but we wouldn’t expect it until possibly Phase 4 (after The Avengers 3) – That is, unless Marvel surprises everyone and sneaks it into one of their 2016 or 2017 release dates. Perhaps the end of Age of Ultron could set in motion the events leading into another Hulk adventure. How that could involve the environment outside of Hulk smashing stuff in it is anyone’s guess.

MTV caught up with Ruffalo at Sundance as well and asked him for some quick thoughts on The Avengers 2 script that was just recently sent out to the cast by Joss Whedon.

“I would say that it’s better, it’s cooler, it’s more awesomer. It’s a little bit darker, but also really has Joss Whedon’s incredibly, witty and sly sense of humor.”

It’s a brief tease but Ruffalo’s words echo that of Scarlett Johansson who described it as “dark” and “cerebral.” Should Marvel give Hulk another solo feature before The Avengers 3 or would you rather the studio take that slot to introduce a new character? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Would like to see Hulk more in a supporting role in other MCU movies. Not as a standalone, regardless of who plays Hulk just not entirely interested. If Iron Man 4 was to ever be made… why not add Hulk as a supporting hero the same way War Machine is already used in the movie. How do you make up for Iron Man 3 shenanigans… Hulk vs Iron Man as the twist of the movie.

    • I actually enjoyed the little twist in the movie, but the idea of the Hulkbuster armor going up against Hulk would be awesome to watch!!!

  2. The Incredible Hulk was a great film imo so im all for a solo outing. But the idea of Hulk parting with another hero could be interesting, especially if it was a Ironman & Hulk film with the Hulkbuster armor.

I just hope Marvel does more with Hulk.

  3. So, a big green angry Captain Planet?? Um, I’ll pass…

  4. I’m actually a huge fan of both the Hulk and Mark Ruffalo, so I’d love to see another Hulk movie. Though I’d be more than a bit pissed if they primarily focused on the tension between him and Thunderbolt in this one again. I mean it was done to claustrophobic-death in the previous two (and yeah, I know that the General always hunts him in the comics, but there are so many other story lines).

  5. Hulk is the wrong character to play if you want to slip environmental messages in your movie, or at least, not the best choice for it.

    • Well he was created in part due to man building weapons of mass destruction. Which affects man and nature simultaneously. Not unlike the idea of Godzilla being born from atomic testing.

    • Bruce Banner is very much an energy guy. The Hulk, not so much, but if you look at the current Invincible Hulk comic book, Banner is a scientist predominantly interested in tapping new, cleaner, renewable energy sources.

I don’t know how, exactly, they could tap into that, but it’s not far fetched at all.

      • Well they kinda established that as Stark territory. But since he is friends with Stark I see a Marvel Team Up!

  6. The last two Hulk films did relatively poorly not because they were bad films per se – Hulk is just a hard sell. The dramatic bits with Banner can be interesting, and some of the Hulk rampaging is cool, but a whole movie of it? As much as I liked Ruffalo’s portrayal in the Avengers, I think that a little bit of Hulk goes a long way. I definitely want to see him play a larger role in another Marvel movie though – maybe they could team him up or give him a supporting role in another film, or make it a double bill.

  7. The Hulk is amazing – and tho the 1st 2 films never quite got it right – the Avengers Hulk is more like it.
I would love a new Hulk movie – but with more Hulk in it – He talks – he thinks – he is not just a version of Banner – Let’s hear his side of the story more & a wee bit less Banner. That’s why the comics are named The Incredible Hulk.
The Hulk is an icon – but they got to get him right on the big screen – Ruffalo is the best Banner so far (since Bill Bixby who was superb).
The Leader is a great Villian – as well as the many villians from the comic books…I for one want another movie soon – but full of action and adventure.

  8. So marvel is making darker more serious movies copying DC I’m not surprised.

    • They aren’t copying DC, DC fanboy, not at all! DC is feeds off Marvel’s movies for ways to be better. Just cuz Avengers 2 is gonna be darker(slightly) doesn’t mean they copy DC. Grow up dude.

    • Just because a script is “slightly” darker doesn’t mean its going to be like Christopher Nolan’s Batman series. It’s called character development. If you can’t understand what that is or how it works, I dunno what to say. But if you’ve watched Marvel’s CU films so far, you can tell they’re not nearly as dark as DC, let alone copying them.

    • Pretty sure DC is trying to copy Marvel in the movies anyway… It’s too bad marvel comics have gone to s*** because they have the best heroes. I’m not a big DC fan but I’m liking the 52reboot for the most part…. God someone get rid of Quesada!

    • Marvel’s not copying DC. Have you seen any of Joss Whedon’s shows? He LIVES off dark storylines.

    • DCs darker stories originated from Marvel writers working for them like Frank Miller.

    • What! So would you rather see Hulk in the Avengers or Hawkeye and Black Widow. IMO they can loose both of them and bring in some real heroes with powers.

Hulk is the mightiest Avenger. Without Hulk and Thor the Avengers are a mediocre at best.

      • And that is why Hulk, Thor and Iron Man were often NOT in many of the Avengers issues; they were powerful enough to head their own titles. The Avengers are a TEAM, which means so called “lesser” characters would work together to accomplish things. Then again, other members like Wonderman and Vision are also quite powerful in their own right but, likely, COULDN’T carry a title alone (well Wonderman tried and I collected it, actually, but, yeah it was mediocre, at best).

The big guns were not always needed when a team of Avengers could do the job; they just called on Thor and others when needed.

  9. I hope they make a Hulk standalone, he was the best part of the Avengers IMO. I hope they do a Hulk vs Red Hulk movie they can even throw in the Leader. Now that would be an epic Hulk movie.

I hope they do him justice in the Avengers 2.

  10. yeah I want a stand alone Incredible Hulk sequel.

villains should be The Leader and Red Hulk.

  11. I’m glad Age of Ultron will be darker. Less of the humour in almost every even-numbered scene, please! It’s so annoying in IM3 and The Dark World.

  12. It sucks cos a solo Hulk movie would actually be better than all other Avengers including Iron Man.

  13. I want a Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and a Black panther movie before I want another Hulk movie.

Bruce/Hulk’s a GREAT supporting character, but I’m just not sure whether a solo story with him (again) would make me as excited than the other two I mentioned above.

I would watch it of course, because Ruffalo is milestones better than Ed Norton was, but still. There are a lot of heroes standing in line, waiting for their chance to shine (so to speak), so why a 3rd Hulk movie?

So yeah, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Strange or well…

A Hulk & She-Hulk movie? That would be great, 3rd film for Bruce Banner/Hulk, while it also introduces She-Hulk. Although, I have no idea how that could work (it’s just a random thought that came to my mind at this very second).

    • Maybe Banner visiting his cousin, ends up fighting someone/something, cousin gets hurt. He does the blood transfusion, a la tradional origin, and She-Hulk is born. She comes to aid him in finale fight with the bigger threat.

  14. To quote Tony Stark “I don’t care about the liberal agenda any more, it’s boring.”

    2019: PLANET HULK

  16. Hulk is not interesting as a character. Jekyll and Hyde can play so far and rampaging Hulk even less. All the Planet Hulk -> World War Hulk sounds like true b******* and had tons of poor writing in there.
Hulk is ok as a secondary character, no full focus of the show.

  17. Keep your politics out of my comic book movies

    • Too late.

  18. Lol ok there Ruffalo. I can see the plot now;

    - Hulk defends Vista Verde from erosion bought upon by the evils of dry desert winds.. In a twist.. It’s global warming!
    - we’ll see Hulk punch air and tend to desert flowers and watering them. Exciting stuff. Kind of like that weird scene in Ang Lee’s movie where Hulk gets all peaceful while starting at desert moss of some random shrug looking thing.

  19. Hulk as a standalone film wouldn’t work right now, imo after AoU things should shake a bit and seeing the recent delay in BvS it wouldn’t surprise me if Marvel’s plan for that date would change a little, so…

2016: Iron Man vs. Hulk featuring The Leader and Rulk (RIP DC)

  20. I dont know what might have been left out when you collected these quotes from Ruffalo, but I don’t see anywhere him saysing that he wants to make an “Environmental Hulk” movie. This would be like posting a quote where Robert Downey Jr. talks about how much he likes “Hello Kitty”, and then titling your article “Robert Downey Jr Talks ‘Avengers 2′ Script & Hello Kitty Standalone IroMan Idea”. I’m not saying that he didn’t suggest this, just that the connection you’re making between the quotes you provided seems pretty tenuous.

  21. I would like to see a new solo Hulk movie. I think they’ve definitely got the right man for it in Mark Ruffalo. I loved how he made it his own character rather than trying to replicate Ed Norton after replacing him. Despite less-than-stellar box office performances by the first two, I think Ruffalo himself and the fact that the character received a lot of love in the Avengers both give a lot of potential in succeeding in another shot at it.

  22. I guess he wants the hulk to make a green film.
I disagree that they need to send the audience an eco-friendly message. We already get enough of that shoved down our throats from various media every day. The political overtones of films like Avatar and Elysium get annoying when they are emphasized so much. It saturates the movie and drops in entertainment value.

    • Yep, enough with the tree hugging hippy crap. Hollywood always thinks they know more than us “peasants” and they’re always talking down to us. I would say most people are smarter than most actors and have a lot more common sense.

    • Avatar made $2.7 billion is world wide box office leaving all others in the dust.
I am sure the studios would get over that it might lose entertainment value to some.

  23. Hooray, a movie about the perils of Gamma Radiation… It makes me think of the time when all the tree huggers were promoting ethanol and it turns out it is much more harmful to the environment. Global warming became Climate Change around the time the Global Warming Summit got snowed out. Electric cars use just as many fossil fuels as regular cars. I could go on all day, but those with an actual open mind will get my point.

Other than, “don’t dump your trash or toxic waste into the rivers”, Hollywood should shut up because they could ultimately do more harm than good.

  24. The Hulk is Godzilla when you think about it. It’s the horrors of man unleashed. Where Godzilla is the physical embodiment of the force of nature coupled with the fear of science/tech misuse (nuclear power), whereas the Hulk serves as a very similar template the only tweak is that he is physical embodiment of the dark side of human nature coupled with the fear of technological misuse (nuclear power). So Hulk really is just a more “personal” variation of Godzilla really but with the added effect of being the transformation of a man into a litteral monster.

Yeah over the years he’s morphed into a hero and a more docile nature of sorts, but at its core, just because he’s green doesnt mean he’s ties to nature In a positive way. Heck, he is the face of human destruction, he is desolation and death of the environment.. Not it’s saviour. Think that’s nicely captured in the “old Hulk” comic where he is the last living being on a destroyed earth (well him and a super roaches).

  25. If they could make an ‘environmental’ movie in the same respect that Avatar was environmental then i think they will have a major worldwide hit. 2 million box office?
Big companies & governments stomping on the little guy and taking over his land is happening worldwide and has a huge draw when combined with top notch special effects, etc…
This is right up the Hulk’s alley. Hiding in some small country trying to get away from the government NSA eavesdropping. Then stepping up and protecting the little guy.
Maybe he does this on another planet to give it a more superhero type feel (similar to Avatar).

    • You haven’t read planet hulk then have u? Lol

      • I am not proposing a Planet Hulk.
From what i understand the Hulk being in Avengers cost big money due to the intense CGI involved, hence his low screen time. I am not proposing a bunch of Hulk (or other CGI things) in a movie due to that.
I believe even Feige had mentioned that something like Planet Hulk would not happen due to the cost. Planet Hulk would only be possible if they made Avatar / IM3 box office equivalent. But we all know Hulk is a risk and not a sure bet when it comes to box office.
I am proposing something set in earth type surroundings with humans (humanoid) as the main protagonist and antagonist and Hulk is merely caught up in it due to some work he is pursuing. Not unlike how in the TV show Bixby used to travel around and get involved in what was going on wherever he went.
